A point is a point, and another clean sheet is another clean sheet but boy was this a painful way to earn both!

As the wind swirled around Meadow Park, play-off certainties Bedford looked the most likely team in recent weeks to breach Matt Bath's rearguard but his luck held as the Eagles found the City defensive unit much more cohesive than the one that'd faced them at the New Eyrie in October.

New signing Jeff Eckhardt had to make do with a place on the bench whilst Luke Corbett was given his first start in eight games after the Addis and Bevan partnership had failed to spark at Aylesbury.

With four minutes gone Craig Rydeheard found Chris Dillon unmarked at the far post but the shot was well saved by Bathy. City were struggling against the wind and could only test Bedford stopper Ian Brown with a curling Corbett free kick which was always heading for the keeper's hands.

After twenty-three minutes Adie Harris had to be replaced by sixteen year old Michael Noakes and the young defender adapted to the difficult conditions and bumpy pitch well.

A combination of Mike Ford and Brown saved Bedford on the half hour when Jody Bevan burst through and Ford delayed the striker allowing Brown to get down bravely at his feet. Although from the side it looked as though the former Oxford defender had fouled Jody as he beat him for pace.

At the other end Carl Williams used the wind to swing a corner under the bar at the far post but Noakes headed clear off the line. The Tigers should have taken the lead when Bevan’s cross found Corbett in space in the penalty box but Luke delayed and was forced wide by a defender.

On the stroke of half time Chris Thompson was the victim of an uneccessary assault as he guided the ball out for a goal kick, but was shoved into the wall by a Bedford forward. The sight of Dr Bob Byrne on the scene suggested that it was serious and was confirmed after the game that he'd broken his wrist. The offender wasn't even spoken to by the referee.

Eckhardt replaced Thommo for the second half.

On the hour Dillon should've netted for the Eagles after he'd robbed Noakes in his own half, however the Scotsman could only strike the post with the noisy T-Ender's chanting "How wide do you want the goal?"

For City veteran Eckhardt had a couple of chances but neither troubled the former Stone Roses singer (joking!) in the Bedford goal. The second was an air shot at the far post which had he connected would've found the target.

A goalless draw was the fair and predictable result but a point is still useful with the Tigers now just a maximum of nine points from Mathematical safety and five games in which to earn them.

Battered and bruised, Tim Harris's Tigers had to be ruthless with this game by not only taking three points to get rid of the uncertainty or relegation but also push Luther Blissett's team closer to the drop themselves.

Having lost Adie Harris, Mark Preece and Chris Thompson to injury the City manager gave a full debut to Jeff Eckhardt as well as bringing Lyndon Tompkins back from Bishops Cleeve. Also Irishman Mark McKeever was given his debut in the left wing back slot but his Weston colleague Justin Pritchard was required by Frank Gregan at the Conference South club so wasn't available.

The sun shone down on Meadow Park but it was to be the wind that was to have a major impact on the game as it blew from Hempsted to the Docks, and with City attacking the T-End in the first half goalscoring opportunities were to be few and far between.

The only chances of note came Chesham's way as Sean Ridgway had a snap shot from the edge of the area which produced a smart low save from Matt Bath. Former QPR striker Steve Slade set up a shooting chance for Daniel Burnell who hooked a shot narrowly over, then midway through the half Byron Glasgow burst down the left, cut inside and forced Bathy to come out to save at his feet.

The closest City came to finding the net was a shot from McKeever from the edge of the penalty area after his corner had been cleared back to him. However, Blissett would rue his sides failure to score with the wind at their backs as City took full advantage after the break.

Just Four minutes in Chris Holland headed his first goal for the Tigers when he rose unchallenged for McKeever's perfect corner and planted the ball in the back of the net.

Two minutes later a corner from the opposite side by the former Irish U-21 International swirled it's way beyond Alex Lawler in the Chesham goal and despite the best efforts of Michael Harvey and diving Byron Glasgow on the line the assistant referee ruled that it had crossed. I don't think it did, but hey, I'm not complaining!

Chesham were being pegged back by a bouyant City side and were grateful to Dwayne Golding when he stooped to clear another corner from Luke Corbett at the far post but from the following set piece City's leading scorer did well to control a flick on and fire a shot past Lawler for City's third goal in six minutes.

A double substitution by the Generals led to them becoming the first team in almost nine hours to breach the City goal when Chris Sullivan shrugged off a challenge and shot from the edge of the area and Bath saved but the ball looped up for sub John Bacon to tap in.

Centre back Golding received the first caution of the game when he tripped Dave Wilkinson and Lyndon Tompkins almost marked his recall to the City team with a goal when he volleyed towards the target but his strike wasn't Corbettesque and it flew just over the bar.

Chesham made their third change as they tried to find a way back into the game whilst youngsters Jamie Reid and Michael Noakes replaced Jody Bevan and Corbs.

Daryl Addis moved into a more advanced role after occupying a position behind the front two for the best part of the game and got the Chesham keeper in a spot of bother when he chased a long ball only for Lawler to carry it out of his area. He was booked.

But the fireworks were left for injury time when former Gangsta rapper Harvey (MC Harvey of the So Solid Crew) aimed a punch at City's Reid as both teams lined up for a Chesham corner. The City man was booked whilst Harvey was shown a straight red.

News that all of the teams at the bottom bar Aylesbury had lost plus this win mean't that the maximum of eight points needed before kick off had now vastly reduced to two. Ironically a defeat at Salisbury next week could be greeted with cheers if the results go the right way!

And so the Tigers roamed into the Lions Den as the two most in-form teams met up at the still only half-built Raymond McEnhill Stadium on the outskirts of Salisbury.

Defender Mark Preece was surprisingly overlooked by Tim Harris despite overcoming his injury sustained playing for Bristol Rovers' reserve team as Lyndon Tompkins kept his place at the heart of the City defence. Included in the Salisbury side was recent signing Luke Prince, now on his fifth club since leaving Meadow Park in the summer of 2002.

Over recent weeks Salisbury's home gates have swollen like a clinical testers head and if they continue to pay out a weekly wage bill as high as the rumoured £9100 that they have been then they will need to make this kind of attendance the norm rather than the exception.

Quantity doesn't necessarily equal quality though as the City fan who wandered into the throng of Salisbury fans will testify. Upon being positively identified as a Gloucester fan he was told to "F**k Off over there with your lot while you can still walk" by a Whites Supporter who also turned out to be a club employee. What a charming man!

Our man headed over to the sanctuary of the travelling T-End who numbered between seventy-five and a hundred that had made the awkward journey south to cheer on Harris' men as they looked to maintain their ten match unbeaten run.

The warning signs sounded inside the first couple of minutes though as Jonny Miller was called into action to block a goalbound shot from an early corner. The full back then got into an attacking position to drill in a cross which fell kindly for Luke Corbett but the Tigers' top scorer somehow got the ball stuck under his feet and could only muster up enough power to match a Richard Kear type shot which was easy pickings for Kev Sawyer in the home goal.

Two City players were cautioned within two minutes. First up Wilko foolishly knocked the ball away after the whistle and was carded before Miller also had his name taken despite looking as though he was the one who'd been fouled.

With the game approaching half time a very rare mistake from on-loan defender Chris Holland proved to be very costly as pikey striker Paul Sales latched onto the loose ball and fired home from an angle at Matt Bath's near post. Ironically it was almost a carbon copy of the strike that Sales had netted when City won 3-2 at the RayMac almost exactly eight years earlier to the day. Funnily enough, the ground hasn't changed one iota since then!

City looked to make amends and forced a series of corners. From one Lyndon Tompkins acrobatically volleyed towards goal but saw his shot blocked before it could pierce the net and from the following corner a defender leaned forward to chest Mark McKeever's poor set piece away only to control the ball with his arm. The referee may well have been unsighted for the appeal but it was directly in front of the linesman who was too f**king simple to put his flag across his chest.

Had the penalty been given City may well have pulled level and altered the course of the game but it wasn't to be and Salisbury added insult to injury in the fourth minute of first half injury time. A corner was seemingly headed out of danger but it fell to winger Alex Haddow who arrowed an unstoppable volley into the top corner from twenty yards. Matt Bath just stood and watched what was a truly stunning strike, seconded by myself from my position directly behind Haddow's foot.

For the second half either City were out very early or Salisbury were out very late but when the game eventually restarted the home team showed why they were Champions elect as they settled back on their two-goal cushion and easily dealt with most of what City could throw at them.

On the attack Luke Prince was up to his old tricks as he shamefully conned the referee into booking Jeff Eckhardt after a nothing challenge on the former City winger.

Following a double sub that saw both the ineffective Bevan and the under-par Corbett withdrawn Daryl Addis was pushed up front and was partnered by, of all people, Holland. I guess Harris thought that if Dutch was going to drop another clanger then it wouldn't be as costly if he was that far up the pitch!

Tom Webb became the fourth player cautioned for an innoculous aerial challenge. Four bookings despite no-one really going to ground in a tackle. I'm sure the three officials were suffering from a bout of "Big home crowd" syndrome and wanted a post-match pint in peace rather than have to face the wrath of over a thousand knuckle-dragging locals.

Jamie Reid was very unlucky not to give the Tigers the consolation goal that they deesrved when he stole into a good position on the penalty spot and made a firm connection with an angled through ball but his effort was met by the sizeable bulk of Sawyer between the Salisbury sticks. You know, if the money does run dry at the RayMac and the Addams Family need a new butler, Sawyer would be a ready-made replacement for Lurch!

Dreadlocked on-loan Swindon Town striker Ashan Holgate was given the opportunity to rest his arms as crowd favourite Matt Tubbs continued his rehabilition from his recent injury. Young striker Andy Varnham was given another chance to impress whilst local nighclub bouncer Rene Regis was given a run out for the home team.

Neither goalkeeper was troubled as the electronic advertising board strained past ninety minutes and with the final whistle came the popping of the champagne corks as Salisbury prematurely celebrated the Championship to Queen singing over the tannoy. The funny thing was that the packed terrace behind the goal had been deserted and the players danced like Nobby Stiles in front of a fraction of the locals that had paid to watch them!!!

Despite the defeat and Northwood taking the sword to Cheshunt it seems as though the Tigers are now officially safe from the drop. Well done to Tim, Chris, the players and everyone who have worked hard to turn around what could've been a very disastrous campaign.

Isn't it always the case that on big games or Bank Holidays when an extra few people come through the turnstiles at Meadow Park that the game is a bag of spanners!

After the disappointing defeat at Salisbury Tim Harris was hit by the recall of Chris Holland to Bath City although it wouldn't have made too much difference to his thinking because he was injured from two days earlier. However, it later turned out that the paperwork for the recall was flawed and Dutch remains a Tiger until the end of the season.

Halesowen had edged City out at the Grove during the festive season when Chris Thompson gifted Howard Forinton the only goal of the game but having seen their play off hopes finally gone on Monday the Yeltz must be looking back on this campaign with nothing but disappointment.

Michael Noakes started this game for City at left back as Mark McKeever was pushed up into midfield and Jody Bevan was dropped to the bench. Harris said that it was because he looked a little tired, but he was 100% effort, 10% application at Salisbury and in my opinion lost his place on merit.

The first half was dire, without a chance of note for either side although in a funny way it was well received because now that we're out of the relegation dogfight meaningless end of season matches are better than scraps to the death!

The second was an improvement and City actually created a chance after about an hour when Luke Corbett did well on the halfway line to thread a pass to the galloping Wilko, but he could only find the keeper with a disappointing shot.

A double sub by the Yeltz livened things up a bit and following a move where Forinton stole in at the far post and nodded wide got closer as Simon Forsdick rose unchallenged to head the ball against the base of the far post with Matt Bath a mere spectator. Thankfully it bounced straight out again and was hacked clear by Mark Preece.

Corbs hadn't threatened up front so was replaced by Bevan, not the most attack minded move given City's need for a goal as they replaced their top scorer with a striker who hadn't found the net in open play.

However within a minute the change was vindicated as Jody cleverly headed the ball past Dean Coleman at the near post following good work from Noakes and a clever little cross from McKeever.

It was the only high point of a game that settled back to the non-event that it had been for most of the afternoon. Even Halesowen looked resigned to defeat.

The three points gained were enough to mathematically confirm our place in the Southern League Premier division for next season. Congratulations to Tim, Chris, Muzzie and the team for keeping us in this league because relegation would've been a disaster.

With our place in the Premier now confirmed this game was little more than an end of season affair that the Tigers edged when they scored with their only real chance midway through the second half.

Errea Cup finalists Hitchin were without top scorer Josh Sozzo, just like they were when we visited Top Field two months earlier. However this time he was banned and not swanning off to a wedding on the other side of the world!

Striker Justin Pritchard finally made his debut after being required by Frank Gregan at Weston for the previous few weeks, although the Duncan Norville lookalike did little to impress the Tigers fans, but with little riding on the result no-one really stood out.

Just like the game against Halesowen at Meadow Park five days earlier the first half was dire. Chanceless and dire. It really wasn't much of a spectacle but it did reveal how Tim Harris had kept the Tigers up as his side repelled any meaningful attack from Hitchin with little regard to what they did with the ball other than clearing it.

The only incident worth writing down was Jonny Miller's injury, although I'm not sure how he got it or what the extent of it was as he was replaced by Jamie Reid, who went on to have a comfortable game on the right. Miller did however spend the rest of the half sat in the dugout with an ice pack on his knee.

Into the second period now and the game still hadn't given us anything to shout about, although the T-Ender's did as they sang and drummed their support for the Tigers. One fan even got a text message from a friend in Linden saying that they could hear the noise from there!

A couple of changes breathed some life into the contest when Leeyon Phelan came on for Gavin Jaggard and for City Dave Wilkinson was withdrawn after he was clattered by Hitchin keeper Richard Wilmot at a free kick.

Harris' least favourite striker Luke Corbett took his place.

Luke's father Steve had caught the attention of Hitchin defenders James Ayres and Stuart Hammonds with one of his verbal tirades in their direction. Oh how Non League Paper columnist Hammonds chuckled as he had one eye on the game and another on Corbett senior. It's just a shame that he wasn't concentrating on Luke as much when City's top scorer touched home the only goal of the game.

Pritchard found himself in a withdrawn position with a good sight of the target when a corner was cleared to him but the former Weston striker dragged his shot hopelessly wide. All was not lost however as the woeful attempt turned out to be a very good pass to Mark McKeever but the wing back was denied his first City goal when Wilmot dashed off his line to block at point blank range from the Irishman.

The ball fell to Corbett though, and the rest is history!

With just under ten minutes remaining Jeff Eckhardt replaced Jody Bevan for a run out up front after another disappointing show for the City striker. Jody sure seems to love the atmosphere being generated on the T-End but at this rate if he wants to sample it next season he'll have to pay eight quid like everyone else.

For the first time in over a season there was enough interest in a game for the City fans to fill a coach. Ironically, the game was meaningless and even though we lost no-one seemed to care as the fans in fancy dress headed across the Cotswolds to Oxfordshire.

For the last game of the campaign Tim Harris made three changes with the injured Jon Miller being replaced by Jamie Reid, Jeff Eckhardt coming in for Chris Holland, who had returned to Bath (for real this time) and Luke Corbett chosen ahead of Dave Wilkinson, who'd failed to make the starting line-up for the first time since January.

For the Puritans the familiar face of goalkeeper Simon Tricker was missing as he had struggled to recover from an ankle injury and lost his place to Alan Foster.

Top scorer Andy Baird looked handy and came close when he found room at the far post and squeezed a shot across the face of goal. In reply Mark McKeever might've netted for the Tigers had the Banbury keeper not kicked the ball off the line Sunday League stylee!

A flurry of early substitutions followed as first Jeff Eckhardt made way for Dave Wilkinson. Fifteen minutes later Adie Harris came on for Justin Pritchard and Banbury's George Redknap replaced Baird.

In a similar chance to the one created earlier by the now departed Banbury striker Adie Harris easily beat his opponent before squaring a ball across the six yard line that Luke Corbett could only get a hint of boot leather on and the ball went out off a defender for a corner.

Wilko's direct set piece looked poor initially but surprised many as it smacked against the post and fell for Bevan who also hit the upright with his shot on the turn.

It was goalless at the interval.

The vital change for the home team came just before the hour mark when Ollie Stanbridge replaced Adrian Fuller. Both sides had half chances before the Puritans made their third and final change, this time with former Aylesbury winger Neil Lazarus coming on for Matty Gooderick.

Jody Bevan was unlucky to see his shot stopped by the keeper who seemed to fall on the ball rather than make a "save" and then it looked as though the home side would get a penalty as their man appeared to be held back by Adie Harris, but much to our surprise and the derision of the Banbury fans the referee waved away the appeals.

Lee Randall was the sixth and final sub of the game when he swapped with Corbs and minutes later the Tigers thought they were in front when Daryl Addis ran onto a through ball and netted but the referee had blown up at the start of the move for handball against the City striker.

Just as they'd done all season Banbury surprised the opposition (us) and stole the three points with a late winner. Stanbridge found room at the far post and planted the ball between Matt Bath and the upright.

So City's hopes of a top half finish were scuppered but even had Harris' men won today it wouldn't have matter as Grantham were victorious at Mangotsfield.
