Gloucester City & The Southern League Cup |
This is a competition which in recent years has seemed very unloved by the clubs that contest it with very few of them taking it seriously. Those that do, and win it are treated to a pre-season play off match with the Southern League Premier Division Champions. |
Since I've been following the Tigers it has been sponsored by a variety of companies and the club has competed in the Westgate Insurance Cup, Larchimage Windows Cup, Errea Cup, Dr Martens Cup and Barclays Commercial Services Cup to name but a few. |
Our only success came back in 1956 against considerable odds after having lost the first leg of the two-legged final 0-4 away at Yeovil's famous sloping Huish ground. The second game at a packed Longlevens stadium saw City see off the Somerset side 6-1 to claim a famous victory. |
The last time that the Tigers reached the final was in 1981/82 against Wealdstone when the left back for the north Londoners was none other than Stuart Pearce. |
These days players and management alike see it as more of a hinderance than the chance to claim some glory and are put off by the prospect of a midweek game at Grantham or Kings Lynn in March and often meekly surrender at the first attempt. To their shame. |
