Having started as a youngster with Norwich City the Irishman moved onto Peterborough United where after just a handful of appearances he was snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday as part of a £1,000,000 transfer involving another player (David Billington). Having made the breakthrough into first team football at Hillsborough, he seemed set for a long run in the side, but a serious foot injury sustained whilst playing against Arsenal in January 2000 kept him out of the game for almost a year. Following an intial loan spell with Bristol Rovers and another with Reading he returned to the Memorial Stadium in February 2001 but again injury saw him struggle to hold down a place and was released in the summer of 2003 when he was snapped up by Frank Gregan at Weston.
