Smudge has earned a reputation for putting players through their paces during tough training sessions and within a week he'd proved how unfit some of Chris Burns' players were as they pulled up with injuries after the new drill instructor had had his way with them! As a player Smith originally came to Gloucester as part of the £10,000 deal that saw John Freegard join from Bath City in January 1991 but injury and off the field issues mean't that sightings of the tricky winger were few and far between as the Tigers narrowly missed out on promotion to the Vauxhall Conference. Chris resurfaced at Forest Green after playing his football locally for a couple of seasons and was part of the team that elevated the club to the top of the pyramid. When he hung up his boots he moved into management as assistant to Frank Gregan up at the Lawn and followed the moustachioed one to Aberystwyth and Weston Super Mare. Chris then tried his hand as #1 with Cinderford Town where with an injection of cash he saved the Foresters from relegation to the Hellenic League.
