The History of Tiger Roar

The original unofficial Gloucester City AFC fanzine Tiger Roar was started during 1988 by some of the fans enjoying the blossoming Beazer Homes League Midland Division Championship campaign. I'm a bit sketchy on who was involved in production those days, but I do know that the Editor was Russell Price a.k.a. 'the teaboy', because he is a well known tea addict! Also regular contributions were made by The Capri Cat and The Barcelona Kid. They may have been pseudonames for Kevin Hurcombe and Steve Barselotti (the son of my ex-junior school dinnerlady) who I know were definately involved and as you can see above and below, it was little more than a few pages stapled together.
Personally, I didn't get really involved in the fanzine until around about the 1993-94 season when the mighty organ had begun its great slumber into decline, a sad loss. I produced issue number 23 virtually single handed, and brought you unbelievable stories from around the footballing world including how Andy Townsend wouldn't have made it as a pro without current assistant manager and ex-City star Mark Buckland! From that experience I can assure you how difficult (and expensive) the whole effort really can be, but it's worth it when you see the finished product.
Then came the Paper Tiger......
I helped my brother Steve (formerly of BBC Radio Gloucestershire fame) to produce his own fanzine, the Paper Tiger. Wow! Talk about controversial. We made the mistake of printing a song written by some Chelmsford City fans about a guy who used to live in town, I forget his name, Frank East or something like that. Our phone was red hot, boy did we get in trouble. We were reported in the national newspapers alongside Billy Connolly (who had made similar jokes in his live video)!!!! Fame at last.
There was no Paper Tiger issue 2.
The link between Gloucester City FC and fanzines didn't stop there though. Since then we've seen other one-off issues such as Johnnie Murphies Barmy Army which suggested that City hero Andy Adebowale may have been eligable for the Republic of Ireland. I have absolutely no idea who brought this one to the terraces. Then of course the Spice Girls (mainly Julie Armstrong, I think) gave us the Tigger Snigger, however I think that this one was less City, more 'Debbie's obscenely short skirts'. I don't imagine we'll get an issue 2 of either publication any time soon...
And of course the fanzine is being kept alive by this website. With the increase of PC's and the Internet among the population TR is now becoming an important part of the media for the club. If there is a problem, it's that all you read on here is my opinion, that isn't to say you don't have the opportunity to say your piece, you have the City Open Forum too.
The actual site has come on in leaps and bounds over the course of it's history. It used to feature just a few pictures from a game at Bromsgrove with those of the pitch flooded, now it would probably take over an hour to navigate fully. When it relaunches for the umpteenth time (you won't be reading this until it has) it will have a developing 'A to Z' of City players past and present, a fans=eye ground guide to pretty much every ground that I've seen City play, videos of goals from games that have been taped or televised in the past and more images than you can shake a stick at!
You can view many of the original issues of Tiger Roar (and more) in the Library
