The first ever issue of Tiger Roar, an eight paged edition that dealt with the main topic of the time - Identity Cards. There are match reports from the win at Wellingborough and a home draw against Baldock Town. A couple of cartoons, feature on the youth team and the fateful discussion on how TR started make up this issue. |
TR #2 already boasts an extra four pages from it's predecessor. With all proceeds going to Comic Relief, it starts out by having a pop at Jim Barron, the clown of Whaddon Road. Talk of England FC, match reports from Coventry Sporting, Halesowen & Mile Oak Rovers plus youth team news are here. |
Now sixteen pages TR had some mighty boots to fill. Several cartoons featured in this issue including an amusing referee's take on City players of the time. For the first time a letters page appeared although, none of them seemed too authentic. Match reports for this issue came from games against Nuneaton Borough, Sutton Coldfield Town and Stourbridge plus a 7-1 hammering of local rivals Forest Green Rovers. An intersting feature by Mr Filofax asked "where are they now?" as he tracked down City names of the past plus there was a look at the popular terrace craze of the late 1980's - Inflatables! |
This issue celebrated the clinching of the Beazer Homes League Midland Division title, the only major trophy that City have won in the past fifteen years. City skipper Brian Hughes was interviewed by the TR Crew and there was an in depth look at the Hillsborough tragedy. Match reports came from Atherstone and Tamworth as well as the home defeat to Spalding United (my first ever game) plus the vital win away at Dudley. A survey tested whether you were a 'true' City supporter and there was the first of the back page crosswords. |

TR #6 starts off with some personal opinion from 'Barse' reagrding the re-formation of the Supporters Club and Cheltenham Town, and it's good of him not to totally slate them! With City having won the league the previous season, TR brings us a few quotes that may have been missed and heading into the new season there are reports from some of the pre-season friendlies that the Tigers played against Burnley, Coventry City & Northampton Town as well as news from City's opener at Gravesend & Northfleet. The issue is completed with news, fanzine reviews, cartoons and Trev King's attempts at filling a coach! |
- (Oct 1989) |
Ex-Tiger Dougie Foxwell was the beneficiary of the proceeds from this issue for his testimonial game. There was a tongue in cheek look at what City's stars did for their day jobs plus reaction from City's win at Waterlooville. The short lived featured of 'great tackles of our time' reflected on how Martin Lander had been sent off for inadvertantly stamping on future City star John Freegard. There were the usual match reports as well as a look at some of the quotes from the Severn Sound sports reporter. More fanzine reviews filled in the back pages. |
- (Nov 1989) |
"Have we got the FA Cup in our hands?" asked the front of issue #8, it may have seemed so as the Tigers marched on in the country premier cup competition. There were in-depth reports from the win at Folkestone as well as concerns about the CDB rearing their ugly heads. Roger Smellie got to interview the legendary late City player, assistant boss and eventually manager Steve 'Ollie' Millard. Sky pundit had joined Cheltenham from Glasgow Rangers so TR took a look and as well as reports, there was the showdown between Brian Godfrey and Dougie Griffiths (the Worcester boss) plus a fanzine review (space filler?) |
- (Dec 1989) |
This issue went to press just after the Dorchester Cup win and it provides much of the material for the fanzine. Intrepid reporter Roger Smellie sits down with Chris Townsend and theres an introduction to our new keeper Joe 90 (aka Dave Mogg). The back pages are shamefully taken up with filler from the WSC fanzine... |
- (Jan 1990) |
TR #10 was spoiled for material following the Cardiff games including national press coverage where their fans had caused damage to Meadow Park. Roger Smellie interviewed Lance Morrison and Little Timmy Shorter (the Stroud FC Supporter) made the first of his handful of appearances. An early attempt at Davenport's Diary featured in this issue as well as more fanzine reviews and match reports. |
- (Feb 1990) |
TR #11 came around the time that Meadow Park was flooded for the first time. Away games continued and one such at Wealdstone featured a game against their supporters before the match (we lost 1-3). There were plenty of photos of the flood including one of turncoat Mike Heather going for a splash about. There are more excerpts from Davenport's Diary (aged 13 1/4) plus a TR crossword! |
- (April 1990) |
Apparently no-one congratulated Chris Townsend when he scored five goals in the 9-0 win over Gosport Borough, so TR did it on the front cover instead. That wasn't all from the Welsh wonder, well, almost, Roger Smellie interviewed his new haircut! Thickism, referee Mr Singh (of Colesly) and the Poll Tax featured before a five page spread on the match reports took over. The TR Awards 89/90 to centre stage as well as features on Steve Johnson and Ian Hedges (who'd recently left for AFC Bournemouth for £25,000). The ranting rugby fan had his say as well as more from the mind of the young Davenport Chronicles. |
- (Aug 1990) |
TR #13 gave us an early impression of photoshopping as Steve Talboys and Wayne Noble both became victims of some clever photo foolery. The results from the TR awards 89/90 were published with moments from Ninian Park heavily featured. There was a scoffing report from the Pilkington Cup Final where the Cherry and Whites were humiliated by Bath and a tribute to Graham Withey, with his picture taken at Bath! Stu Wilding and Darryl Taylor went sick from their jobs at the Post Office to go to Italia '90 and were almost sacked for their trouble but they provided a good six page report. City secretary Jason Mills featured topless with long hair and TR took a look at their rivals from the Gloucester Citizen. |
- (Sept 1990) |
TR was forced to apologise to the Citizen, John Beacham and more in this issue. There were debates on what to do with the transfer money from Towner's move to Dorchester as well as the growing pains of Ian Hedges. The crew from Star Trek visited Meadow Park and there was a summary of the supporters five-a-side tournament from Cwmbran as well as more fanzine reviews (yawn). |
- (Nov 1990) |
"It's so good it's better than being there" read the banner headline, well, better than being a steward at Farnborough according to travellers on the three coaches and those trying to get into the social club. A great cartoon from Naf Regit showed how Lance Morrison flew in to rescue our cup run and guest scribe 'the Andoversford Connection' made an appearance ahead of the lengthy match report section. The second half is full of 'filler' centred around a massive contribution from the Letters Page. |
- (Dec 1990) |
This is the Christmas issue from the 1990-91 season where our title run-in with Farnborough was gathering pace. Topics included negative reaction to the fact that City might revert to their original red and white shirts and the red tape wrapped around football affiliation. Ace reporter Roger Smellie corners Derek 'the Dude' Dawkins, Jason Eaton, Jeff Sherwood and Len Bond for a chat whilst the usual match reports feature as well as a busy letters page thats always good for filling an issue. |
- (Jan 1991) |
Another superb cartoon from the pencil of Naf Regit follows Chris Townsend's short lived Dorchester career plus we are introduced to a new friend, Sid Pann - the Cheltenham fan. The Creature Comforts characters make their TR debut as well as more news from the Supporters Team, match reports and a TR quiz. Plus there's a lovely picture of Andy Birchley inside the back cover! |
- (May 1991) |
This issue came out as the Farnborough season was drawing to it's nail biting conclusion. The Tigers had just beaten the Robins at Whaddon to life the Gloucestershire Senior Cup and it was atime of success as we'd just fallen in the quarter finals of the FA Trophy after a memorable win at Merthyr Tydfil. The match reports made good reading and there was also a report from a game against Merthyr Supporters. This was also the issue where someone had sent a cartoon portraying striker Graham Withey as a camel! |

Oooh, this all looks a bit embarrasing now that our loving rivals 'the Robins' are in the Football League (even though they're shite) but this issue was almost solely devoted to their relegation from the Conference. A seven page match reportathon is well written as it skims across half a season and it's amazingly out-done by half a page with a journal from Glastonbury '92. |
Opening this issue to page three you'll see the immortal words that will never be reported in the Citizen, "... and the Beazer Homes Midland Division Champions are Forest Green Rovers", oh dear! With a crew of two or three it shows how hard it was to fill the fanzine as ptI of 'our Annus Horriblus' (match reports) takes up more than seven pages. More reports follow, this time on the new SFC Tigers Sunday side and following the TR Top Thirty is an epic of how Swindon Town won promotion to the Premier League (and thats it!) |

- (Feb 1992) |
This was an 'after the Lord Mayors Show' kind of issue after Les Alderman had pulled the carpet from under Citys feet following the Farnborough disappointment. It was a bumper issue page wise but featured mainly dated material and also a massive match reports section that bizarrely appeared in two different typefaces. There was a report from the Peterborough five-a-side tourney and also the 1991 Reading Rock Festival plus the usual Naf Regit cartoons and a tribut to our Wimbledon bound star Steve Talboys. |

- (March 1998) |
A strange effort this, put together by the 'spice girls'. Certianly not produced to the same standard as Tiger Roar but there was a serious interview with Tigers' boss Leroy Rosenior. The A-Z of Gloucester City is an entertaining read but the rest is puerile and irrelevant at best (so good fanzine material then!) |
