Neil Mustoe - Defensive Midfielder  Neil Mustoe
Neil Mustoe is a player that achieved his boyhood dream when he signed for Manchester United as a schoolboy. He learned his game alongside the likes of Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs but despite featuring regularly in the reserve team never made the step up and was signed by Roy McFarland at Wigan Athletic.
Things didn't work out in the northwest and he followed it with a spell at Cambridge United where he settled and spent four seasons before bad luck with injuries and the ITV Digital collapse saw him released. He signed for City whilst looking for a club higher up the pyramid and combined playing with the Tigers with training full time with Yeovil. His fitness was a major factor in City's upturn in form and he put in several star performances including the FA Trophy victory at Merthyr Tydfil.
He'd made more than thirty appearances when ex-Cambridge teammate John Dreyer was made caretater boss at Stevenage Borough and Neil was given the chance with the Broadhall Way club. But Dreyer didn't get the job permanently and Mustoe was released.
Following his training at Yeovil he was offered a short term contract at Huish Park as the Somerset side won the Conference Championship, but there was to be no extension and he was a free agent again. Neil went on trial at Telford United but wasn't offered a deal and came back to City at the beginning of the 2003/04 season.
The season produced a number of below par displays from Mustoe but one must consider the change he has gone through from full time to part time football, a concern highlighted by City Assistant Boss Mike Cook.
Neil is always worth his place thanks to his ability to break up play but his vision going forward leaves a lot to be desired. He has one of the best shots among the midfielders yet when presented with a shooting chance rarely takes it. His one goal to date was a free kick at home to Taunton Town in February 2004.
As City make the step up a league his experience will be vital as the club looks to continue it's recovery.
