Having dropped to the bottom of the league without playing in midweek Chris Burns' men responded to his decison to stay at the helm at Meadow Park with a superb 5-2 drubbing of crisis club VS Rugby Town United whatever.

Town's Scottish manager Billy Jeffrey had stood his ground on a 3pm kick off (clashing with the Wales v's England match) so almost half of the people that watched the Mangotsfield game on Monday were in attendance for this game. Pity those that chose the dire International over this though as there were three goals in the first ten minutes to treat the small crowd.

Tom Webb profited from good wide play by the very impressive Lee Davis as the young striker took the ball to the goalline before cutting back to the midfielder whose shot took a slight deflection to beat Stevie Wilson in the Rugby goal. City don't make life easy for themselves though and uncertain goalkeeping from Matt Bath let in the visitors to equalise through Rory Squire despite the ball being cleared off the line twice before the Town man finished.

Yet within a matter of minutes City had taken control again when Richard Kear brought the ball to the edge of the area following good interplay between Webb and Chris Thompson. Kear's touch seemed a little bit heavy but the ball found it's way to Adie Harris who arrowed a first time shot under the bar and beyond the despairing grasp of Wilson. It was the first time that both Adie and Tom Webb had scored in the same game since City's famous FA Trophy win at Woking.

It got even better with two further goals before half time. First up Neil Mustoe converted his second penalty in five days after Lee Davis had been prevented from jumping for a cross by Rugby's Rob Gould then Davis himself scored with a tap in after good work out on the right by Daryl Addis had bamboozled the keeper.

With the sun now baking down on Meadow Park it was always going to be hard to maintain the tempo for another forty-five minutes but it was still disappointing that Rugby were allowed to come out and dictate the play. Things got a little nervy when Bathy inexplicably stood and allowed a shot from David Stone to angle in off his far post as the visitors looked to be fighting their way back into the game.

However Chris Thompson secured the three points with his first goal for eighteen months when Tom Webb's left wing cross evaded everyone in the box before falling to the City man who calmly controlled the ball before lashing in a shot past two defenders on the line.

Chris Burns's smile at the final whistle said it all!

Unbelievably City live to fight another day in this VITAL competition. A loss at any early stage will have huge financial implications for this campaign so Burnsys men can take this as a warning.

Following the big win against Rugby many fans would've sat back waiting for the goals to flow against this Wessex League side but it wasn't to be and only Matt Bath's goal looked as though it would be pierced.

On another day the two early chances that they had would've found the net but on this occasions they hit the post and then saw a shot arrow just the wrong side of the upright with the City keeper a mere spectator.

City didn't have a chance of note but in the meantime did enough to earn two cautions. Chris Burns saw yellow for jumping at a corner with his arms raised whilst Keith Knight talked himself into a booking.

The most notable thing about this contest was the deluge that Meadow Park suffered as the Heavens opened and as the half time break approached created a real danger that the match may have to be abandoned. Only the fact that the rain stopped as the players went for their half time oranges saw the game survive.

Unless both teams had spare kit to hand it would've mean't a second half contested in damp, soggy shirts that stuck uncomfortably to the body and it showed as the dull fest continued from the Tigers.

Christchurch had another chance to take the lead within moments of the restart but their substitute headed wide of the far post when he diverted a centre across the face of the goal.

A spate of substitutions from both sides included the welcome return of Neil Griffiths but still no meaningful efforts on goal, except maybe Griff's header that was comfortably held by the keeper.

That was it, a replay, a night off work and chance to cross swords again with their talentless number four!

Having got off the hook on Saturday Chris Burns took his men to the New Forest for this midweek replay with the simple objective of winning and earning enough money to keep the season on track. It didn't work.

Despite having the best of the first half action X'ch keeper Gareth Barfoot remained virtually untroubled and only saw threats to his goal when Lee Davis forced an error by Simon Elliott which almost saw the defender put through his own goal.

Richard Kear had time to control the ball and shoot from Chris Thompson's long pass but he looks nothing like the assured finisher that we had in pre-season and this effort was fired hopelessly over the bar.

However on the stroke of half time way up the hill on the far side of the cricket pitch the home fans had something to celebrate as Dave Roberts met a cross from the left hand side and fired past Matt Bath.

A difficult half time team talk would've followed and two strikes within eight minutes not long into the second period killed the game stone dead. First Reza Sotoudeh netted in a similar fashion to the first goal then Lewis Till fired in a shot from the edge of the box that met no resistence until it struck the back of the net.

Chris Burns was brought off by Keith Knight, quite why I don't know and the gaffer himself seemed reluctant to leave the field. It didn't help that some wiseguy in the stand shouted something to the City gaffer and on another day might've found himself confronted on the touchline.

With the game now lost for sure the last ten minutes were spent discussing what needed doing to sort this unholy mess out. Several players names came up and also one fan suggested that they all be made to walk home from Dorset. He was serious too.

Burnsy was also serious as he walked off. So angry that I wouldn't be surprised if he'd quit there and then. Maybe he would've done had he turned around to see the joyous celebrations being performed by the home team in the centre circle.

After the Christchurch double debacle it couldn't get any worse. Could it? Oh yes it could!

City made the short hop down to Twerton Park to face Team Bath where the crowd was so poor that even the pikey kids from the council estate overlooking the ground couldn't be bothered to turn up and abuse Joe Green.

At games I write down every incident that happens and other than an early shot that Matt Bath turned over his bar there was nothing else of note in the half. It was that good!

Not long after the start of the second half Steve Cook, an ex-scummer from Whaddon was the only player of the game to be booked as he punted the ball away after the award of a free kick to City.

Keith Knight shot just over the bar for City but it was Bath's Shaun Canham who broke the deadlock when he made room at the far post and headed a cross past Bathy. The City keeper got his hand to the ball but it wasn't enough to keep it from finding the back of the net.

The there wasn't much between the two teams and the goal was a real sickener for the City fans but Knight might've done better when he stole in unmarked at the far post to head a free kick into the side netting although fans behind the goal said that he should've at least hit the target.

A nice move ended with the ball at Rich Kear's feet just eight yards or so from goal but all he could do was send in a weak shot which didn't test the keeper in the slightest. Having looked so assured during pre-season it's hard to understand how he could look so poor now but with shouts like "Rubbish" and "I can piss harder than that" coming from the travelling City fans he's sure to know what we think of his efforts.

But the final whistle gave the points to the students in this six pointer to make it the first time ever that City have lost to Ged Roddy's protegés.

So it's ten days until the next game and whilst the supporters can have a nice rest Chris and Keith will need to be working hard to turn things around.

When your luck's out it's well and truly out isn't it?

This was a game ultimately contested by two poor teams, together making a poor game. So much so that at half time a spectator on a mobile phone in the toilets described what he was 'doing' to the person on the other end rather than the match that he was watching.

The surprise in the team line-up's came with former City man Lee Smith dropped to the bench when he'd have liked to have shown us what we were missing. As for the game the only time either goal looked like being breached in the first half was when Richard Kear ran and shot just high and wide of the far post.

However the second period started with a bang when Ciren's Kevin Halliday took on Jamie Reid, kicked the ball in front of him, ran into the City man and falling to the ground. The wanker of a referee pointed to the spot even though his knock on had hit the perimeter wall before the sack of shit had hit the floor.

This riled up the City fans and also got Reid, Chris Burns and Neil Mustoe booked for dissent but don't blame the City men because there's and old Chinese proverb along the lines of "If six men say that you are sick, then lie down" that the wankeree ought've taken heed of before dishing out his cards. Arndale scored.

Lee Smith made his mark on the game when he came on, but not in the way he would've liked as he was cautioned for a late tackle on Richard Mansell. The ill discipline continued when Gus Fraser was booked for a rash challenge on Reid out on the right wing but the youngster had chance to level things when he shot narrowly wide of the far post from an unmarked spot a few minutes later.

Ciren didn't deserve to win this game and it's a shame how it'll go down in the history books as a victory for them when they cheated their way to the points ably assisted by gullible, useless referee who ran around smiling all night long. Anyone fancy wiping it off for him?
