September 8th 1998 : City 0-0 Weymouth
This was a game that we really should have won, but I had a gut feeling that it was going to be one of those nights.
There isn't too much to say apart from the fact that we missed a hatful of chances (including a penalty from Gary Thorne) and that there keeper made a string of quality saves to keep us at bay. I was that frustrated by the result that these are the few words that I'm limited to.

September 12th 1998 : City 1-0 Nuneaton Borough
I had an email when I went online after I'd finished work on Saturady morning from a Nuneaton fan thanking me for the directions to Meadow Park (I wonder if he got there!) and also looking forward to the Boro making it seven wins out of seven games. Smug mode on......
When I got to the ground, I saw my brother Radio Glos Steve and had a sneek preview of the team. I wasn't shocked to see that Tony Hemmings was out because it had said the he was carrying an injury from the Weymouth game. However, it later turned out that he'd been told to go away and sort out his attitude by Leroy Rosenior. I hope this won't be the start of the end of the Hemmo/Tigers love affair. Almost unnoticed was the fact that Tom Rutter would start for the first time.
The game itself was very attacking and end to end. It was a treat for the children in the crowd, there as part of the Walls Ice cream sponsored family day (under 13's got in for £1 and got a free Ice cream). City scored what proved to be the winning goal after just 11 minutes. Chris Burns brought the ball out of defence and gaive Adie Mings a magnificent pass with the outside of his right boot all of fifty yards. Minger slipped after beating the defender but regained possesion and passed to Andy Tucker who had charged through from midfield. With just the keeper to beat, Tucks made no mistake.
Rutter was by now making quite a name for himself, chasing every ball that he could and being a complete pain in the ass for the Boro back four. He showed just what was missing in the City front line - movement from the strikers. If we are talking about who should be the front two then Tom Rutters name will surely be mentioned. He certainly had more of the game than Nuneaton's teenager star Malcolm Christie.
Unfortunately City had another three players names in the referee's notebook. Jon Holloway for fisticuffs in front of the dugout after he was prevented from getting up by the Nuneaton winger. Chris Burns had been fouled all afternoon and could feel injustice at his yellow card, given when he gave the Boro man a sharp kick on the calf! But Adie Mings was also cautioned after a clash with a Boro midfielder and a long delay, I guess he must have said something.
Burnsy almost put the result beyond doubt on at least two occasions in the first half. His first effort came on the half volley from his left foot, a bullet shot the bounced to safety off the angle of post and crossbar. And a smartly taken free kick aided by Steve Fergusson in the wall (he fell backwards - how many more tricks are there in his book!) which just missed the far post.
A slight concern on Leroy's part was his inability to use his substitutes earlier. Mike Wyatt had struggled out of position out on the left of midfield and was replaced by Will Steadman to counter the threat of Boro's pacy winger. But he left it soo late to bring on a striker. Adie Mings looked to have run himself into the ground and in my opinion should have been replaced instead of Rutter. And when Darren Keeling came on, he seemed to want to take on Nuneaton on his own. But at the end of the day, we won 1-0 and Nuneaton lost their 100% record.
I do get the impression though that we will lose at Manor Park.......

September 26th 1998 : Burton Albion 5-3 City
They do say that a team performs better when they sack their manager, and Burton were certainly no exception to this particular rule
This was a real topsy-turvy game, the scoreline went : 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 5-3. The thorn in City's side being ex-Tiger David Holmes who completed his hat trick with virtually the last kick of the game (he even managed to get in a rather childish badge kissing display after scoring the first equaliser).
City took the lead after just five minutes, but really the game had only seen about one minute of action - the rest was Adie Tandy treating Steve Mokler after an elbow in the face from Sherlock himself. From the restart, City broke forward down the left with Tony Hemmings (who had another ordinary game) and then a cross-field pass saw the ball with the unmarked Jon Holloway. A first time cross deep to the far post was met by the leap of Darren Keeling and his downward header bounced past the reach of ex-scummer Nick Goodwin into the far corner to put City into an early lead.
Wouldn't it have been nice to see a dour game with few chances and no more goals afterwards? Well come on this is Gloucester City! Holmes got the first of his trio from ageing strike-partner Andy Garner's lay off. Running onto the ball he deftly flicked the ball high over the despairing grasp of Mokler in the City goal, then to shouts of City reject he performed his ridiculous badge kiss! Wanker.
Half time came and went, and the second half was no more than five minutes old when the Brewers were awarded a penalty after (possibly) Gary Thorne had tripped who cares. The bald headed one blasted into the top left and corner and City were losing. Then it seemed that we would never get back into the game. From an encouraging start to the first half we had gone slowly downhill and were not producing any kind of football, especially through the conspicuous by it's abscense midfield. Shortly after the penalty the ineffctive Dave Webb was replaced by Andy Hoskins - a welcome return to you Andy.
Suddenly and completely out of the blue, Adie Mings equalised for City. A knock down from from Hosk found the unmarked Minger on the penalty shot and his weak volley squeezed into the corner of Goodwin the dinosaurs net. How on Earth did he let that one in, that goalkeeper is the epitomy of good in the air, but shite on the floor. And more was to follow moments later. After an afternoon of crap Corners from City, one flew over and from Andy Hoskins' header, the rebound was stabbed in by Mings, and we were 3-2 up!
But you just knew it wasn't going to last, and it didn't. It went from the sublime to the ridiculous! David Holmes got his second to make it 3-3 and then from a well worked free kick, Alan Davies' rocket shot gave Mokler no chance and we were behind again. Tony Hemmings was replaced by Mike Wyatt and City pressed for another equaliser as I went to the bar, I'd had all that I could take. Hosk came very close, forcing Badwin into a good save and to compound our misery, Holmesey turned himself into a hero by making it 5-3.
Like I said at the start, isn't it amazing how teams play better when they get a new manager.

September 29th 1998 : Bromsgrove Rovers 0-1 City
What a difference a day makes (or three days in this case!)
City travelled up to the Midlands on this wet and windy Tuesday night and came away with all three points against an unimpressive Bromsgrove side. It's very hard to see how the 'Greenbacks' have remained unbeaten at Victoria Park all season when they only managed a mediocre show against the Tigers and were lucky to only lose 1-0 in the end.
City included new signing Tommy Callinan in midfield (replacing the lacklustre David Webb) and he immiediately shored up the weakest part of the City team. Ironically Tommy was later replaced by Webby in what turned out to be the turning point of the game!
City made a few chances as the ran up the hill in the first half notably Adie Mings being denied by brave goalkeeping as early as the fifth minute, and the in form Jon Holloway was unlucky to see his lob go over the bar after a mix up between the two defenders. Bromsgrove had their chances too, Steve Mokler had to be at his sharpest to keep out one effort midway through the first half. And in the second period he was called upon to scissor kick away an awkward backpass.
The winning goal for City came deep into injury time. Darren Keeling had been pulled to the floor on the corner of the penalty area and from the ensuing free kick taken by Chris Burns, Kempy was at hand to nod in substitute Andy Hoskins' header at the far post. Wild celebrations followed and we all went home happy!
It might not have been pretty, but we won.
