October 3rd 1998 : City 2-1 Paulton Rovers
And yet again our annual foray into the FA Cup almost ended before it actually started, the only thing that spared our blushes against Screwfix Direct league side Paulton was the last minute diving header from teenage substitute Steve Bennett.
It could have been so different, after bombarding the opposition goal for the first ten minutes they broke away and scored after Tony Hemmings was caught in possesion in his own penalty area. The scorer? You got it, the man with scum in his blood - Martin Boyle.
City did manage to get an equaliser before half time, Darren Keeling seized upon a defensive error and cooly slotted the ball past Paulton keeper Ken Scrivens. However Darren was put in with a gilt-edged chance after good work by Hemmo, but he could only blaze high and wide from little more than six yards out. And with the complete lack of movement from Adie Mings (who was later substituted), this gives Leroy Rosenior a real problem among his front men. Andy Hoskins replaced Minger early in the second half but was himself taken off after injuring his thigh.
Who can he be thinking about for the number nine and ten shirts?
The unfortunate injury to Hosk turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it saw Steve Bennett make his home debut for City, one that was marked with a last minute winner! After good work by Tony Hemmings, Chris Burns received the ball before forcing his way to the corner line and sending over the perfect angled cross with his left foot. The keeper thought about going for it before retreating to his line and Benno beat his marker to stoop and direct the ball into the far corner with his head. It certainly spared City's blushes and considering that Rovers had had a shot go narrowly wide moments earlier, City can count themselves fortunate to be one of the names in Mondays third qualifying round draw.
Oh well it will be easier to get back to work from Ciren on Tuesday, and besides, I haven't the slightest idea where Paulton actually is!

October 6th 1998 : Cirencester Town 1-3 City (aet)
On a bitterly cold night City went down to Ciren with a weakened team to take part in this season's Noddy cup. Oops! Musn't call it that now, we need this to take part in next years FA Cup.
On a bumpy pitch the usually violent Cirencester team started to kick the shit out of our boys early on, Ton Rutter being a notable casualty as early as the fifteenth minute. Notably their player wasn't booked but Gary Kemp saw yellow for a similar foul minutes later. Ironically Rutter's replacement Steve Bennett saw his shot with his first touch deflected in by Gary Thorne to make it 1-0 to the Tigers.
The rest of the game was unremarkable as it got colder and colder and when Cirencester's ex-City striker Mark Boyland equalised in the last minute the need to go to work saw me leave!
In the end though two extra time goals from Dave Webb were enough to see us through to a second round tie away against Bristol Rovers.

October 17th 1998 : City 10-0 Sudbury Town
Smug mode on......
Well what can I say after such a result? So many times we've seen City come out against lesser opposition and play to their level, as was the case in the previous round against Paulton. This time however the Tigers came out and again attacked from the off. Tony Hemmings (playing up front because of the lack of strikers) saw his early effort touched onto the post by Sudbury keeper David Walton, and Dave Webb was unfortunate when his finishing shot from a well worked City move saw the keeper block him out again. We actually went twenty minutes without scoring before teenage sensation Steve Bennett put us 1-0 up.
A well timed run from Adie Mings saw him latch onto Jon Holloway's long, low pass on the edge of the box. Minger muscled his way towards goal only to find himself on the penalty spot facing the wrong way. However, a short pass to his right saw the last minute hero from the Paulton game Benno control the ball, dummy the defender and bury the ball high and wide of the keepers right hand to give City the first of what would turn out to be ten goals!
After waiting a full twenty-one minutes for the first, number two followed remarkably quickely! A Sudbury free kick on the halfway line was taken quickly and badly, Chris Burns intercepted the ball and put Hemmo through wide on the left. Tony beat the only defender and crossed perfectly to Burnsy who had made up the fifty yards to the goal, who took a touch and almost mis-hit it into the back of the net.
City looked easily capable of holding a 2-0 lead to see us through to the fourth qualifying round, but from past history I had the feeling it wouldn't be enough. Just as I was telling this to my mate Batch, Hemmo took on a defender inside the area and curled the ball inside the far post and made it 3-0 to City on the stroke of half time!
I would normally say that the interval came and went, but I just have to mention that I won the raffle!
Seeing as it was such a blustery afternoon in Hempsted, we thought twice about going around behind the other goal, but merely two minutes after the re-start Steve Bennett crossed and the un-marked Chris Burns nodded his second of the afternoon and City's fourth. We headed towards the car park end! (note : we must think of a better name for that end of the ground)
Tommy Callinan was unlucky in the first half when he saw his diving header well saved by the goalkeeper. And having seen him develope into a much better player at Forest Gump Rovers it was only a matter of time before he got his name on the scoresheet. As I've already mentioned it was indeed a windy afternoon, and just perfect for crossing horrible swirling centres that the goalkeeper would struggle with. This corner was scrambled clear, but only as far as Callinan. Tommy hit it back with interest, it smacked against the bar and bounced in before the defender cleared it again, but the lino had already flagged and City were winning 5-0.
Adie Mings did play in the game against Paulton, but you could have been forgiven for thinking that he actually hadn't, because he was crap! Today however he worked incredibly hard and it was amazing that he hadn't scored. Adie had one of the earliest chances, he narrowly missed sliding onto Jon Holloway's hard and low cross. Thankfully Benno gave our Adie good cause to celebrate his 30th birthday! Steve beat the full back and ran towards the goalkeeper before cutting the ball back to Minger who gladly swept the ball home to see us lead 6-0
Tony Hemmings and Dave Webb then got replaced by Andy Hoskins and Andy Tucker, and before long we had another corner. Benno swirled it in and gary Kemp arrived from nowhere and (using his head) thumped it in..... 7-0
A minute later (and after Steve Fergusson was substituted for Will Steadman) Adie added to Sudbury's misery. He received the ball with his back to goal in the area and using his tremendous body strength, turned his marker and slammed the ball high into the goal and it was 8-0 to City
Andy Hoskins then got into an almost identical position to Minger (when he scored his first) and got his piece of glory. 9-0!
I'm sorry if my descriptions are getting a bit lazy now, but it's hard to remember all the action! But the last ten minutes did provide some talking points. Andy Tucker brought a good save out of Walton and Steve Mokler was stunned when they had a shot at him! When Adie Mings walked past at a corner, I said to him 'Get a hat-trick Minger', to which he replied, 'It was be noice' in a real West country accent! And indeed it was noice for the birthday boy, as he made my day by making it 10-0 in the ninetieth minute. I had vivid memories of the game against Gosport Borough when we won 9-0, and as this afternoon wore on I so much wanted City to emulate that scoreline. Adie ran onto a through pass and flicked the ball past the keeper and watched it roll inside the far post.

October 24th 1998 : Chertsey Town 0-5 City
Fifteen goals in two games, not bad preparation for a difficult trip to Kidderminster.
On a day like today when it absolutely lashed down with rain and the wind buffeted anything and everyone, for the City to score another five goals was quite a remarkable achievement. After last Saturdays 'goal fest' against the hapless Sudbury Town, City travelled to Surrey to play Ryman league first division outfit Chertsey. Leroy Rosenior named the same eleven that started in the FA Cup, and it proved an effective tonic for the start of our (hopefully long) FA Trophy run.
The Tigers won a corner virtually straight from kick off and Tommy Callinan was unlucky to see his toe-poke fly narrowly wide of the near post. Soon after david Webb became the first City player to have his name taken when he felled his opponent when turning, maybe the referee was at fault for not taking the conditions into account. And inevitably soon after that Adie Mings followed for what looked an innoculous challenge when charging through on goal.
Then we scored, or so we thought we scored until the linesman ruled it out for a possible handball. However it wasn't too long before the travelling City faithful were in raptures. Chertsey (on one of their rare attacks) had a corner kick cleared, and the loose ball found its way to Tony Hemmings. Hemmo ran at least from the halfway line and barged his way past the defender before taking the ball wide around the goalkeeper, too wide we thought, until he slotted it firmly into the far corner of the onion bag! It would have been completely unjust had the game remained goalless at half time, so it was an utter delight to see Adie Mings make it two moments later. Again put through on the break, Minger was unsuccessful in his attempt to lob the keeper, but his parry fell to our Adie who cooly slotted the ball home with his left foot to make the score 2-0 to City at half time.
The second half couldn't have had a better start for City, now playing into the wind. Adie Mings powered his way through from a wide position, and rounded the keeper the score City's third of the afternoon and put the ball beyond Chertsey's substitute keeper. Then it was four! A cleverly weighted ball over the top of the Surrey teams backline was chested down by Hemmo and then pushed clear by the former Macclesfield winger, and again around the goalkeeper and slotted home to further increase the advantage in favour of the Tigers and really put this first round tie beyond any doubt.
As City cruised to another big victory the travelling T-End started shouts of We want Ten and We're wet and we're four-nil up!, and to the delight of the fans we were soon 5-0 up. Tony Hemmings completing his hat-trick by crossing to Minger, and when Adie's view of goal was blocked found himself with the ball again and gleefully beat the keeper to make it five! The only doubt being whether Tommy Callinan had got a touch to help it in, but it didn't matter because it was 5-0 to City. Then sensibly Hemmings was replaced by Darren Keeling in preparation for the FA Cup game at Aggborough.
All that remains to be said was that the Heavens opened on Alwyns lane, Andy Tucker and Mike Wyatt substituted Chris Burns and Jon Holloway and that Gary Thorne did his best to give Chertsey a consolation by slicing a clearance against his own crossbar and that we are in the next round.....
Wembley here we come :)
