Neil Griffiths - Defender
Griff, as he is known, is the City Club Captain.
He originally joined up with City in 1999 from Longlevens, but he had previously played in yellow and black for Chris Burns' successful youth team.
Neil made his debut as a substitute in the 0-5 drubbing away at Merthyr Tydfil on October 23rd 1999. He went on to hold down a place in midfield until he suffered an injury and when he returned he was used in several positions, none of which seemed to suit him.
With players coming and going around him it was nice to see Neil stay loyal to City's cause and after suffering a relegation from the Premier, the contrast of Brian Hughes' and Tommy Callinans management styles and the overall slump of the club it was a surprise that he was still around for the start of Chris Burns' reign.
Burnsy's squad was overloaded with midfielders, so it was either a stroke of genius or stroke of luck that saw Griff transformed into a centre back. In hindsight it was a natural progression because his defensive qualites always shone through when he played in midfield.
Not the tallest of players, his strength lies in his ability to read the game and his close, man marking style. Attackers on the opposition always have to be wary otherwise he'll pinch the ball right off their toes!
What he lacks for in height he makes up for in his jumping ability and although he'll never dominate a back line, his aerial prowess is always a danger at set pieces where he is usually worth about eight goals per season.
Still young enough to make it in the professional game, he turned down an offer with Clevedon Town to remain at City and has been rewarded with high profile games against Woking and Southport where he performed a starring role. Sadly his mistake in the opening minutes at Aylesbury cost us dear but we forgive him!
