Jimmy Cox - Striker |
|
Jimmy first signed for City in the summer of 1999 after being released from his contract by Luton Town. His performances in several pre-season friendlies suggested that he would be quite a coup, so it was with great delight when he signed on the dotted line for the Tigers. |
Looking back now it comes as quite a surprise to see that it took him ten games to score in a City shirt. Even though he contributed goals to the City cause, it was the two other parts of his game that caught they eye. His blistering pace, in a unique running style, showed how easy it was for him to open up the opposition and also it was something that combined with his skill was indeed a rare commodity at this level. Sadly, the worst part of his game came to the fore during the FA Trophy game away at Welling United. Given a better referee that afternoon we may not have seen it, but he had been manhandled by the Conference team's defenders all afternoon and it showed when he was fouled just one time too many. He couldn't control his temper and threw a punch. Then he was sent off. |
By the time that the year 2000 had arrived he decided that he wanted to try his luck elsewhere, so he headed down the A46 to Bath. In his time at Twerton Park he managed just the one goal before rejoining City for their first season back in the Western Division. |
This, his second spell saw him vying for a place up front alongside Matt Rawlins, a similar type of player and Karl Bayliss, the stalwart centre forward. He was in and out of the side and after a mediocre season for the club as a whole he headed off to the seaside at Weston Super Mare. |
City's search for a striker and the fact that his father Daryl was on the board at City mean't that he returned to Meadow Park in August 2002 for the fee of £5000. His third debut lasted little more than twenty minutes when he saw red for calling the referee a cheat!!! |
After he'd served his supension he found his form again. A goal at Weston against his former club and then four at home to Solihull mean't nothing when he injured his arm on the saturday night and missed following six weeks of the season. |
On his return his pace, precision and goals propelled the Tigers into the promotion race and the latter stages of the FA Trophy. He also caught the eye of several other clubs and turned down a short term contract at Kidderminster, instead opting to see out the season with City. |
Thankfully for the club and the supporters, Jimmy signed a new two year contract in July 2003 to spearhead our assault on the DM Western division this season. |
