Steve Portway - Striker  Steve Portway
Despite not making all that many appearances Steve Portway is a legend!
Ports first came to our attention at the first game of the 1995/6 season when he was an opponent for our first home game of the campaign with newly promoted Gravesend and Northfleet. With City hanging onto a 3-2 lead deep into injury time the hotshot striker with two sixty plus goal filled seasons behind him rifled in a thirty yarder that was too hot for David Coles to handle and the game ended in a draw.
Steve continued to bang the goals in and Chairman Keith Gardner announced in November that we'd signed the Aveley based hitman for a whopping £17,500. A massive figure which would pay the clubs wage bill for a third of the season these days although an ex-manager later told us that we'd have got him for much less had Gardner not gotten involved in the transfer dealings.
Portway's first game in yellow and black was away at Gresley Rovers and I'll never forget the sight of him charging down the hill, bearing down on goal and pummelling the ball into the back of the net. This guy could finish. Although, despite being 2-0 up at the break we lost the game 2-3, with futre signing David Holmes causing the damage. Steve had to endure the indignity of the flat capped whippett owners chanting "What a waste of money".
The goals continued to flow before tragedy struck during a game against Rushden and Diamonds at Meadow Park when a freak incident saw the ball hit Portway straignt in the face, blinding him in one eye.
Things were never the same and despite several attempts he was always struggling, espescially for midweek games under floodlights. He did try again in pre-season and even managed to score in a 3-0 defeat of League side Cambridge United but the curtain came down on his City career and he headed back to Essex where arter a brief break continued to terrorise defences.
