Steve Bennett - Winger  Steve Bennett
(photo courtesy of the Gloucester Citizen)
Steve was a young winger who joined from Swindon Town in the summer of 1998.
With widemen Mike Wyatt, Tony Hemmings and Darren Keeling already at the club Benno had his work cut out getting a starting place in the City team so had to wait his turn. That chance came via the subs bench and he made his mark with a late, late diving header that saw City turn a potentially disasrous deficit against Paulton Rovers in the FA Cup into a win.
His time with the Tigers centred largely around that cup run, the pinnacle of which was the superb 10-0 victory against Sudbury Town at Meadow Park, a rout started by his twentieth minute opener.
Steve was now a regular starter and had made the number nine shirt his own but a poor first half show in the next round at Kidderminster Harriers saw him subbed for Keeling and the next game against Tamworth was his last start.
January 30th 1999, away at Halesowen was the last time that he was named in a City team, albeit as a non playing substitute and before long he was released to Hungerford Town closer to his Wiltshire home.
Our paths last crossed in the 2003/4 Western Division campaign when he played against the Tigers as sweeper for Swindon Supermarine. He put in an assured display and did enough for me to think that he could do a job for City again.
