Memory Lane - Gloucester City 10 Sudbury Town 0 |
|
Saturday the 17th of October 1998 will go down as one of the most memorable days ever in my football history. I was fortunate enough to be at Meadow Park on that Tuesday night back in March 1990 when the Tigers beat Gosport Borough 9-0 and I never dreamed that I'd ever see it beaten, but today I did. In the previous round we'd struggled to beat Screwfix Direct League side Paulton Rovers, in fact it was teenage substitute Steve Bennett's last gasp diving header that saw us avoid a replay. Then we had the draw for the next round, and we were paired with ex-Doc Martens League side Sudbury Town, a draw which I feared may continue the Tigers bad habit of losing out to lesser teams in the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup. |
When Sudbury left the DML, their players did the same to the club (it was no coincidence that Stevie Mokler signed for the Tigers). The only two players in the Sudbury squad that day that had been to Meadow Park before were centre-half Chris tracey and midfielder Michael Cheetham. The former Cambridge United player Cheetham was a major thorn in City's side in the last game between the two clubs, he was the one that won the match winning penalty. However he was to have little effect on this game, he only lasted half an hour. |
It took Twenty one minutes for City to score the first goal, and that was a long time to wait and wonder if it was going to be another early exit from the Cup. The hero of the last round, Steve Bennett, collected a pass from Adie Mings to the left of the penalty spot and waited before shooting high over David Walton's attempted save. Then minutes later Chris Burns intercepted a poorly taken Sudbury free kick, passed to Tony Hemmings who ran the ball to the goalline and cut it back for Burnsy to score. Hemmo himself got number three squeezing the ball inside Waltons near post on the stroke of half time. |

Gary Kemp and Steve Mokler has a relatively easy afternoon |
|
Chris Burns started the second half with a superbly placed header from Benno's cross. Then the floodgates opened.... |
|
Goals followed from Tommy Callinan, sweeping in from the far post after a corner wasn't cleared properly. Then Adie Mings marked his thirtieth birthday by scoring the first goal of his hat-trick, sweeping in from another Benno cross. Then Gary Kemp got in on the act by scoring with one of his trademark thumping headers from Steve Bennett's corner. Minger got his second then, he held off his defender and ran into the box before slamming the ball high inside Walton's near post. Andy Hoskins scored City's ninth from about one yard out (I could've done that!) |
Then after waiting fully nine minutes Adie Mings completed his hat-trick and sealed City's biggest ever win at Meadow Park by running onto a through ball and pushing it wide of the keepers right hand to make it Gloucester City 10-0 Sudbury Town. |

Smug mode on...... |
Well what can I say after such a result? So many times we've seen City come out against lesser opposition and play to their level, as was the case in the previous round against Paulton. This time however the Tigers came out and again attacked from the off. Tony Hemmings (playing up front because of the lack of strikers) saw his early effort touched onto the post by Sudbury keeper David Walton, and Dave Webb was unfortunate when his finishing shot from a well worked City move saw the keeper block him out again. We actually went twenty minutes without scoring before teenage sensation Steve Bennett put us 1-0 up. |
A well timed run from Adie Mings saw him latch onto Jon Holloway's long, low pass on the edge of the box. Minger muscled his way towards goal only to find himself on the penalty spot facing the wrong way. However, a short pass to his right saw the last minute hero from the Paulton game Benno control the ball, dummy the defender and bury the ball high and wide of the keepers right hand to give City the first of what would turn out to be ten goals! |
After waiting a full twenty-one minutes for the first, number two followed remarkably quickely! A Sudbury free kick on the halfway line was taken quickly and badly, Chris Burns intercepted the ball and put Hemmo through wide on the left. Tony beat the only defender and crossed perfectly to Burnsy who had made up the fifty yards to the goal, who took a touch and almost mis-hit it into the back of the net. |
City looked easily capable of holding a 2-0 lead to see us through to the fourth qualifying round, but from past history I had the feeling it wouldn't be enough. Just as I was telling this to my mate Batch, Hemmo took on a defender inside the area and curled the ball inside the far post and made it 3-0 to City on the stroke of half time! |
I would normally say that the interval came and went, but I just have to mention that I won the raffle! |
Seeing as it was such a blustery afternoon in Hempsted, we thought twice about going around behind the other goal, but merely two minutes after the re-start Steve Bennett crossed and the un-marked Chris Burns nodded his second of the afternoon and City's fourth. We headed towards the car park end! (note : we must think of a better name for that end of the ground) |
Tommy Callinan was unlucky in the first half when he saw his diving header well saved by the goalkeeper. And having seen him develope into a much better player at Forest Gump Rovers it was only a matter of time before he got his name on the scoresheet. As I've already mentioned it was indeed a windy afternoon, and just perfect for crossing horrible swirling centres that the goalkeeper would struggle with. This corner was scrambled clear, but only as far as Callinan. Tommy hit it back with interest, it smacked against the bar and bounced in before the defender cleared it again, but the lino had already flagged and City were winning 5-0. |
Adie Mings did play in the game against Paulton, but you could have been forgiven for thinking that he actually hadn't, because he was crap! Today however he worked incredibly hard and it
was amazing that he hadn't scored. Adie had one of the earliest chances, he narrowly missed sliding onto Jon Holloway's hard and low cross. Thankfully Benno gave our Adie good cause to celebrate his 30th birthday! Steve beat the full back and ran towards the goalkeeper before cutting the ball back to Minger who gladly swept the ball home to see us lead 6-0 |
Tony Hemmings and Dave Webb then got replaced by Andy Hoskins and Andy Tucker, and before long we had another corner. Benno swirled it in and gary Kemp arrived from nowhere and (using his head) thumped it in..... 7-0 |
A minute later (and after Steve Fergusson was substituted for Will Steadman) Adie added to Sudbury's misery. He received the ball with his back to goal in the area and using his tremendous body strength, turned his marker and slammed the ball high into the goal and it was 8-0 to City |
Andy Hoskins then got into an almost identical position to Minger (when he scored his first) and got his piece of glory. 9-0! |
I'm sorry if my descriptions are getting a bit lazy now, but it's hard to remember all the action! But the last ten minutes did provide some talking points. Andy Tucker brought a good save out of Walton and Steve Mokler was stunned when they had a shot at him! When Adie Mings walked past at a corner, I said to him 'Get a hat-trick Minger', to which he replied, 'It was be noice' in a real West country accent! And indeed it was noice for the birthday boy, as he made my day by making it 10-0 in the ninetieth minute. I had vivid memories of the game against Gosport Borough when we won 9-0, and as this afternoon wore on I so much wanted City to emulate that scoreline. Adie ran onto a through pass and flicked the ball past the keeper and watched it roll inside the far post. |

We've also got an thanks to Neil Cheese of the Sudbury Town website. If you listen to it you'll be amused at how pissed off the guy sounds, not surprising considering he'd just travelled 350 miles to see his team get beaten 10-0! |

GLOUCESTER CITY 10 SUDBURY TOWN 0 |
This turned out to be a big day for more than one reason. Sudbury had already survived 5 games in the FA Cup this season, one of which had gone to extra time. For Gloucester it was just their second FA Cup match of the season. From the outset it looked like Gloucester would be the more likely to score. However Sudbury hung on for just over twenty minutes. Steve Bennett opened the scoring, with Chris Burns making it two only four minutes later. Tony Hemmings seemed to run straight past the Sudbury defence at will and scored Gloucester's third in stoppage time at the end of the half. |
The second half started badly for Sudbury, with Chris Burns netting his second after only two minutes. The floodgates then opened with Gloucester scoring a further six goals before the end. Some notable points were that this was Sudbury's heaviest defeat since the war, Adie Mings scored a hat-trick on his thirtieth birthday and it was Gloucester's biggest win at their current ground. |
