The first we saw of him was in a pre-season friendly away at Moreton Town and his inclusion came as a pleasant surprise to me having known what he'd achieved with the Robins and what he was still capable of. Playing at sweeper, Mark's knowhow in front of inexperienced but superb loan keeper Micheal Oakes made a ramshackle defence almost unpenetrable and in the blink of an eye Bucky would gallop the length of the field to join to attack where he would invariably arrive at the far post to maximum effect. It was one of those forays forward that got City a last gasp equaliser at home to Conference side Runcorn in the FA Trophy which set up a memorable run of three replays against the then Merseyside giants. My poor mini metro still hasn't forgiven him for the two ardous midweek journeys up and down the M6! Of course, it would be unfair to mention Mark Buckland without relating to the tale of his inadvertant helping hand in the career of Andy Townsend from Welling Utd to captaining the Republic of Ireland at the World Cup, then to ITV punditry (God help us!) Whilst he was at AP Leamington and Brian Godfrey was boss at Weymouth the future City manager travelled to the Midlands to scout Bucky. However, the game he watched against the Wings saw Townsend and teammate Tony Agana catch the eye. Godfrey didn't bother with Buckland but snapped up the two Welling youngsters instead and the rest, as they say, is history...
