Mark Boyland - Striker  Mark Boyland
(photo courtesy of the Gloucester Citizen)
Banbury based striker who made a name for himself under John Murphy at Whaddon Road.
Upon leaving Cheltenham Mark headed north to Butlin Road where he continued to score goals for VS Rugby, one in particular, a late equaliser for the Valley in City's penultimate game of the Farnborough season put a massive dent in our promotion aspirations. You can see the offending strike here.
However, as these things go the villain turned into a hero and Boyland, now a veteran made the switch to Meadow Park for the 1993/4 season.
With Karl Bayliss and Tony Cook the first choice pairing Boylo was limited to a substitutes role and it was one outing away at the Cross Keys against Hednesford Town in the league cup which sticks in the mind.
The game had remained goalless through the entire ninety minutes and heading into extra time Mark was thrown on in place of Bayliss. There continued to be no hint of a goal at either end until the super sub appeared in space, inside the area on the end of a bobbling ball which he poked home beyond the despairing dive of home keeper Paul Hayward.
Amid the celebrations, all of a sudden out of the dressing room area (which faced out onto the pitch behind the goal) appeared Karl Bayliss, clad only in a towel and he 'flashed' to the scorer before gleefully shouting "Suck on this Boylo"!!!
I'd be surprised if he did.
