Lee Jeffries - Defender |
|
Rugged centre half signed from Clevedon Town where he'd been a long servant. |
Lee had an interesting opening to his City career. His debut at Brockworth saw him cast a dominant figure at the back alongside the more timid presence of youth teamer Dan Avery and his voice boomed around the Woodlawns pitch telling everyone who was in control. |
The pre-season period saw two extremes of his game. The first was an expertly squeezed in half volley from a tight angle against Forest Green Rovers whilst up the road at Bishops Cleeve he was red carded for elbowing ex-City 'nice guy' Andy Tucker as they jockeyed for a corner. Due to the game being played away it fell under the GFA disciplinary code and Lee was lucky that City argued his ban down from thirty five days to three matches. |
His introduction to competitive football came with a yellow card away at Rugby United on the opening day of the season followed by a another totally needless red card at home to Team Bath in the dying minutes with the game already won. |
However the postman from Bristol was almost an ever present in the City side when he wasn't banned but his presence at corners seemed to interfere with that of Neil Griffiths who'd weighed in with seven goals the previous season whilst with Jeffries he was restricted to three. |
Jethro did get amongst the goals himself though but his five for the season came in just three games. Thats not to say that they weren't important as his doubles against Merthyr in the FA Cup won the game for us and his two headers away at Swindon Supermarine saw us promoted back to the SL Premier. |
With the Championship race neck and neck Lee's opener at Evesham could've set the course for a memorable victory but everything fell apart and we went down 1-4 to virtually hand the title to Redditch. |
After just one year at Meadow Park Lee headed back closer to home with Yate Town when Chris Burns revealed he was unable to give him a pay rise. There was talk of the popular defender returning to City but all this did was force his new club to place him on a two year contract, which I'm sure pleased Jeffreies no end! |
