The COF Awards - 2003/04
These are the results of the 2003/04 City Open Forum Awards. Supporters were given two weeks to aire their views and here are the results.

Player of the Season

Andy Hoskins
player of the season
 player   vote
 Andy Hoskins   73%
 Neil Griffiths     6%
 Lee Smith     6%
 Matt Bath     3%
 Lee Jeffries     3%
 Chris Thompson     3%
 Tom Webb     3%
 Dave Wilkinson     3%
To be fair I think there was only ever going to be one winner of this contest. Andy Hoskins has risen from perennial under-achiever and Hellenic League striker at best to not only claim the 'Most goals in a season at Meadow Park' record, but also the Southern League Western Division Golden Boot.
Lee Mills  "Andy Hosk is indeed magic, he certainly does where a magic hat and as for the golden boot, he did have that."
Mark Witts  "It has to be Hosky, a vintage season & impressive performances.
Chris Galling  "Hosky for me too, as they say the stats dont lie. Gives 100% and im sure if he does not get a contract, if a club came in for him he would find it hard to leave. He is City through and through."
Tarun Patel  "I feel a bit lonely voting for Matt Bath - I think he saved quite a few games for us with some breathtaking saves - without him we would certainly have finished lower down the league tho' you could argue that about any one of our players this season (partic Hosky)."
Darran Pearce  "I voted for Hosky but do agree about Matt Bath, that save he made against Redditch at their place sticks in the mind, but he has done numerous more of those through out the season and without him we would have let in many more goals."

Young Player of the Season

Lee Smith
Youngster of the season
 player   vote
 Lee Smith   74%
 Tom Webb   15%
 Adam Hemming     7%
 Adam Howarth     4%
When Lee first made the step up from the youth team he was very much in the shadow of his elder brother Jamie, a player who'd shown so much promise yet delivered so little. Unfortunately Lee looked out of his depth against big, bruising DM Western centre-halves and really didn't look up to scratch but a positional change and a fitter outlook have seen him improve enough to earn a contract and attract the attention of bigger fish.
Lee Mills  "He does seem to have been around quite a while, but if rules are rules so we should count him as 'young'. I dont think we got a fair look at some of the outh players, why did we stick with 3 on the bench? Put Halliday, Morrison etc. on the bench to get them used to a match day routine and atmosphere."
Chris Layton  "Lee Smith, Great all season, Good at creating and scoring goals played his heart out all season."
Ian DeMaria  "Surely Craig Jones should win the Biggest Waste of Time award!!"
Chris Galling  "He was awesome in the air too! Kingo was a big fan of young Craigs and was heartbroken when he left!"
Matt Clift  "has to be Lee Smith this year. He has been awesome! As for Craig Jones, i can only remember one match he played in and i reckon from what i saw, even Adie Harris would beat him in the air, despite being 2ft shorter!!"

Veteran of the Season

Andy Hoskins
Veteran of the season
 player   vote
 Andy Hoskins   37%
 Adie Harris   33%
 Chris Burns   27%
 Keith Knight     3%
I always thought that Hosky was younger than his 'mid-thirties', yet he seems to have gotten better with age (like wine, maybe a nice Porcupine Ridge). I was thinking of having a section for the veteran veteran of the year, but Adie Harris would've walked away with it, as he nearly did with this.
Phil Ellaway  "Has to be Hosk, with all those goals"
Matt Clift  "he kept on going all season and kept on banging away those goals!"
Chris Galling  "Burnsy for me too. If it wasn't for Kev having a quiet word with him then would he of produced them memorable performances in the last ten games?"

Most Improved Player of the Season

Lee Smith
Most Improved
 player   vote
 Lee Smith   54%
 Andy Hoskins   24%
 Dave Wilkinson   16%
 Chris Thompson     6%
Another award for Lee Smith. The importance in his switch from centre-forward to wing back is only underlined when he's forced to play up front as an emergency striker.
Matt Clift  "definately Lee Smith, he looked much fitter and much more confident this season! Must be every defenders nightmare having to face him on the wing!"
Chris Galling  "Although i agree that Lee has excelled this season my vote is for Chris Thompson who has been put in nearly every position on the pitch, but when in the centre he has been superb. He seems the perfect utility player for us and to be able to do a job like that must be hard, but he has done it and has improved alot since last season."
Joe Green  "Smithy was already starting to kiss ass at the end of last season. I remember last summer, I knew we had a quality wing back in Smithy, although he has exceeded my expectations. But I also remember thinking last summer that we need a new strike partner for Jimmy, because Hosky wasn't cutting it. I thought Hosk would be a decent player to come off the bench though. I think I was wrong "

Best Signing

Lee Jeffries
Best Signing
 player   vote
 Lee Jeffries   68%
 Adam Howarth   18%
 Adam Hemming     8%
 Keith Knight     3%
 Neil Mustoe     3%
The jury was out on Lee Jeffries when I first saw him play alongside the likes of Bradley Thomas and Keith Knight during pre-season. I didn't think he had what it took to improve the side and thought we may've been better sticking with Will Steadman's enthusiasm. Two red cards early in the season didn't help yet the Bristol Postman improved through the season and eventually scored the goals that guaranteed us promotion back into the Premier.
Lee Mills  "Without Howarth's signing I dont think we could have taken the title until the final day."
Chris Layton  "Lee Jefferies has been solid at the back and helps with the goals so i think he deserves to win."
Ian DeMaria  "I agree with you TF. His signing shored up our defence as we went on our unbeaten run and would suggest that if Chris hasn't already done so, he gets him on a contract asap."
Dominic Squires  "Good point TF and IJD, however Jeffro has been outstanding all season especially considering his injury mid-season! He has scored one or two important goals as well! Howarth is one for the future if we can keep him!!!"
Chris Galling  "I agree that Jethro was the best signing, in an area we needed it. He has shone throughout the season and is a true leader on the pitch, well worth the captains armband in my view. One thing that i like about Jethro is the fact that he is first to applaud the fans and if he see's any of the team not clapping us he will let them know his thoughts. Get him on contract is a must"
Matt Clift  "this was a hard one to vote for. Jethro or Howarth? not much in it! Without either of them we would have struggled to do as well as we did. In the end i chose jethro though. He shows a commitment to the club and is always getting the other players going. He makes me as a supporter feel that his heart is in every game he plays! he always gives 110%."
Joe Green  "Jeffro is a total nutter, and indispensible to the club. I reckon he should start as captain next season, because if he tells someone to do something, they don't think twice about doing it. Howarth probably just about edges him defensively (pace), but doesn't influence the game like Lee."
Ian DeMaria  "I know there is no question over Jethro's committment to the club (he was certainly the most distraught player on view following the Ilkeston game) he does pick up unnecessary bookings and sending off's (Bishops Cleeve and Team Bath). You can still have committment without going over the top and that is way I voted for Howarth."
Joe Green  "On second thoughts, I'd like to change my vote to Craig Jones. I think he played twice for us, and scored once. If only all of our players had such a prolific scoring ability we may have won the league."

Goal of the Season

Jimmy Cox
Joint #1 Goal
 goal   vote
Jimmy Cox vs Stourport (A)  18%
Andy Hoskins vs Team Bath (H)  18%
Andy Hoskins vs Shepshed Dynamo (H)  18%
Andy Hoskins vs Taunton (H)  14%
Adam Hemming vs Team Bath (H)  14%
Neil Mustoe vs Taunton (H)    8%
Jimmy Cox vs Sutton (H)    5%
Andy Hoskins vs Gresley (H)    5%
It's easy to pick a long ranger from Andy Hoskins as this years best strike but I'm going with Jimmy Cox's last gasp header at Stourport. It was a game that was there for the taking yet we'd given away a sloppy goal in the first minute and had to wait until first half injury time for Cox to net the equaliser. The second half was borne with frustration as it seemed that the ball simply wouldn't go in but deep into stoppage time, a sublime cross from Lee Smith was met by the unlikely head of Coxy and the keeper seemed to be waving at his mum in the crowd as he watched the ball fly in.
Joe Green  "Against Shepshed, I recall Hosky just putting his foot on the ball about 35 yards out, and just swinging his left at the dead ball and curling it over the keeper's dive into the top corner. Effortless! Muzzie's free kick? I would have saved that!"
Mark Witts  "It has to be Hosky's...One of the many that night against Shepshed!!"
Matt Clift  "a rare coxy header at Stourport, and what a time to do it. In a game that we completely deserved to win, against a keeper who spent more time time wasting than actually keeping goal. That just made that goal that little bit sweeter!"
Trevor Howard  "you must add Dr Wart for the Supporters Vs Gloucester City. Who is willing to shift their vote?"

Although it seems to be SC policy not to award this, erm, award anymore, Pete Chase (R.I.P.) is a worthy winner of this category. It's not because he's no longer with us that he gets it, it's because of the work that he put in up until his untimely passing in December 2003. A great man and a great fan.
Lee Mills  "No one likes me but I dont care."
Chris Galling  "I voted for everyone on there as it is very hard to single out anyone, but if i had to single out anyone it would be Dave Rey as i spoke to him last Sunday at the league finals and he was showing me what he does every week to help clean up at MP as well as painting etc. Typical of Dave though, he didnt want any praise or thanks for it. Top bloke."
Matt Clift  "like norman i have voted for everyone! Everyone involved in the club deserves a big pat on the back for everything they do! Well done all!"
Trevor Howard  "...I feel honoured that my name is even on the list - but I feel good about so many names being there. This season as really been a team effort. I think I predicted that Pete would win this poll - which, given the categories available, is probably right. Pete - we love you. As I don't feel worthy, pleae add all my votes to Pete."

Game of the Season

Chippenham in the Cup - 1-3 down to win 4-3!
 game   vote
 City 4-3 Chippenham Town   72%
 Redditch United 0-1 City   20%
 City 2-0 Cirencester Town     4%
 Cinderford Town 0-2 City     4%
Some people think that the FA Cup has lost it's magic, maybe they're right. The money at the top of the game means that teams compete for the 'Champions' League instead of the more traditional competitions but the love of the old tin pot is as strong as it ever was at City. At 1-3 down against a strong looking Chippenham side, City won thanks to a Lee Smith inspired comeback. A goal from the young winger was followed by him setting up Hosky and then Jimmy Cox for the winner. They tried to sign him after the game!
Darran Pearce  "I voted for the Redditch away game because it was so good to win at their place and I wasnt at the Chippenham game otherwise I suspect I would have voted for that one."
Mark Witts  "I've only voted out of the games I've seen.(Although you could argue that I didn't see it!!!)......The Shepshed game at home was the most memorable for me as Hosky scored a hatrick & didn't see the mayhem in our defence...FAR too foggy...."
Andy Birchley  "I voted for the Redditch game in haste, but on reflection out of the nine games I saw this year the one I thought we played best in and which gave me most pleasure was the New Years Day game at Cinderford. We controlled things from beginning to end and should really have scored more. It was pleasing to see a win in a local derby where we avoided being brought down to the home team's level. I thought the standard of our play (passing and control in particular) on a pudding bowl of a pitch was outstanding."
Matt Clift  "has to be the Chippenham game. What did that game not have?? that game can only be described as amazing!!"

 Ilkeston Town     5%
How Halesowen didn't take all three points away from Meadow Park is a mystery to me. We were even leading 2-0 at half time through two fortunate goals yet we could never weather the storm as they attacked us with David Holmes (yes, him) and Jason Moore up front. Eventually they got their goals back and were better than every side that beat us at home.
Andy Birchley  "Guess who was at most of those................."
Lee Mills  "Halesowen absolutely ripped us to pieces."
Joe Green  "Yeah. i voted for Solihull, but meant Halesowen"
Ian DeMaria  "[against Halesowen] - Thankfully we'd already scored two before them. Soilhull (league game as didn't see them in Mickey Moue Cup) ran them a close second and seem to remember us sneeking a late draw with them "

 Evesham United     6%
Despite having Rugby (and Yate) do the double over us, Bristol City were the best team that we faced away from Meadow Park. No disrespect to Lee Davis and Marvin Thompson but the academy players from Ashton Gate that we faced were far superior to anything we might borrow from over the road and we should look to host young talent from out Bristol neighbours. Added to that, they had Christian Roberts playing and he tore us apart!

It's hard to vote against our short hop up to Redditch, what with the best part of two hundred City fans there to see us inflict a very important defeat on the Champions elect. We got enough support to take two coach loads of fans, it was a gorgeous day and the win sent us home singing. If only we could support City like that more often...
Ian DeMaria  "Redditch had to be the best simply cause we stopped them winning the league in front of their own Mickey Mouse crowd. It must have been so embarrassing for the officials of the club that they could only get 1088 through the gates (of which at least 200 were City fans) for a game which could have seen them win the league"
Tarun Patel  "Bath City wasn't bad but it was wasn't a great game without much excitement in a crappy ground. Redditch was a totally different story (but still a crappy ground) and winning there was fantastic. If they're now in the NCS doesn't that say something about our lads? Didn't go to BS"

You have to feel for Shepshed. It's often said that we have one of the lowest playing budget's in the League, but thats in comparison to what we might've paid in previous seasons. The fact is that clubs like Dynamo are run on a shoestring and if you pay peanuts, generally, you get monkeys. Andy Mac and his comrades came to Meadow Park on a dreadful night and I'm not exaggerating when I say that you could only see half of the pitch thanks to a low shroud of fog. Still, they sang their hearts out, cheered when they scored (twice) and even came down again to support us against Cinderford when they didn't have a game of their own. Sterling bunch, I take my hat off to you.
Lee Mills  "Granted, but I thought Ilkeston fans were a right laugh."
Phil Ellaway  "Merthyr - Best abuse all season, and for calling Taff a racist"
Joe Green  "I remember Taunton coming, being way down the league, and getting soundly beaten. The fans sang all match, and we even joined in with their song to get their manager sacked. Then they stayed in the T-End for 15 minutes after looking totally gutted."
Mark Witts  "I agree with Neil, a great support for a lousy team & a Bl***y long way to come for half a game!!!"
Phil Ellaway  "[about Taunton] - We thought we were going to have problems with them after the game, but they were actually a nice bunch of people just a bit peeved with life. They were really desperate about their position, in fact a couple voiced their opinion that they wouldn't survive the reorganisation, but would go bust. Here's hoping they don't."
Matt Clift  "i will go with Ilkeston because of the fancy dress and they sang for the whole 90 minutes! A rare thing in our league last season"

One thing we've missed since our relegation into the SL Western is the lack of football stadia. It's all well and good playing at the likes of Bedworth, Taunton and Mangotsfield but you can only really watch the game at proper grounds like Woking, Worcester City and Bath City. Although I voted for Ashton Gate, the majority chose Twerton Park, so that was our favourite away ground.
Lee Mills  "Bath City's Twerton Park for me, just beacuse it stirs up memories of my not so distant childhood when I went down there with Jase to watch Bristol Rovers."
Chris Galling  "It's gotta be Team Bath, the seating behind the goal by the 'lack of burgers bar' as it was the seasting from Maine Road."
Matt Phillips  "I'm surprised I am the only person who has voted for rugby's ground. The bar was first class, the pitch and stands were also very impressive."
Tarun Patel  "Bath City - a taste of what we've been missing these last few years: big old non-league grounds with huge open terracing and a large bar - am I right in thinking that they even sold their own brand of beer?! That's impressive!"
Darran Pearce  "As I only went to Team Bath, Stourport, Bishops Stortford, Rothwell and Redditch I dont think I can vote in this one as they were all crap."

Andy Birchley, our exiled fan in Stockport hasn't seen City win at Meadow Park since 1997. That's not to say that he hasn't been a frequent visitor, it's just that some folks are lucky and others are plain jinxes. Take me for example, I watched Swindon Town five times when they were in the Premier League, yet I never saw them lose and they won three of the games in my company. Shandy - STAY AWAY!!!
Andy Birchley  "[about himself]I must admit I get some peverse sort of satisfaction out of it."
Chris Galling  "That was funny and wasn't it TF who started the 'Anti Shandy' chant? Wasnt there another one "F**k off Shandy" to the tune of C'mon City, C'mon City, c'mon city, c'mon ?"
Matt Clift  ""top of the league you're having a laugh" has to get my vote purely because of the response we got from that miserable fat git stood in front of us!"

Poor old Joe, forced to play against the City XI in Rugby boots, for all that he contributed he may as well have played in high heels. This rates alongside the time that Kempy nutmegged Phil Gough in the Supps v's Ladies match in July 2002!
Lee Mills  "Take one talented young footballer (Thommo), take one not so talented footballer (JG), take one pair of widely opened legs and hey presto....Joe falls on his arse."
Chris Galling  "I voted for Kevs vs Burnsy. That was a funny chapter this season, fair play to burnsy for his handling of it too. I remember when he spotted Kev coming into the ground one game after the historic incident and he turned round to Mouse and said "oh no, here comes my mate"! Another funny incident happened at the Supporters vs Ladies game when Burnsies little-un was watching and shouted out "Oi number 17 your a discrace, hang your boots up, im sick of watching you"! It just goes to show that despite the frustration of the game everyone can look back and have a laugh about it."

I've taken hundreds of photos over the course of the season yet there are only a handful that I can look back at and say that I'm proud of them. Photographers have a term known as the 'Decisive Moment', one that I've taken was Helen Wood's 150th goal of her City career at Cheltenham Saracens. The winning photo in this poll was of Joe Green being nutmegged by Thommo in the Supporters match, I kept clicking and got a great result.
Phil Ellaway  "The photo of thommo nutmegging Joe, it showed what sport is all about, enjoyment and fun. Joe was clearly loving his chance to play against City players, and Thommos face showed he was enjoying it."
Joe Green  "A vote for Joe is a vote for humiliation! Go on, make me look even more of a twat."
Ian DeMaria  "I think the players after the game at Redditch sums up all that is good about Gloucester City. Local players, playing for the fans and playing for the shirts. While it was good to watch the players in the past brought in by cheque book chairman, they were not local and did not have the same passion for the club as the current players do."
Dominic Squires  " was thinking the same thing Ian, well that and of Kempy! lol lol"
Chris Galling  "It's got to be the one of Joe getting nutmegged, the picture clearly captures the moment of laughter what evryone witnessed that game."
Ian DeMaria  "[about Dom's fascination with Kempy] - I take it that's where your vote went then seeing as you've got pictures of her all over your wall!!!!"
Tarun Patel  "what about the best picture never taken - someone with their kn*b hanging out over the 'Pink 'Un' advertisement hoarding"

I'm one of the people who can tell you how much time and effort goes into a website as large chunks of my weekend are devoted to bringing TR to the net. I might sound harsh but some people think that they can chuck a few pictures, stats and flashing headlines onto a page and call it a site so I disagree with them. Out of the list above, I voted for Gresley, the T-Ender and Supermarine because they have things that make me want to visit again (other than when City play).
Andy Birchley  "I only really look at Tiger Roar so I have to say that one, although the T-Ender is my place of choice if I'm looking for latest City scores. If this was about Discussion Forums, excluding COF, then I'd vote for Mangotsfield as I quite like the atmosphere and characters. If this was about cheese then I'd vote for Anchor Extra Strength Mature."
Lee Mills  "Poor old Roaring back is no more tho Neil....move on son! Tiger Roar is going to win anyway so I thought I would give the Gresley site some deserved acclaim. Its always the first site for updated league tables and the design is fantastic."
Tarun Patel  "The Gresley site is very professional in its appearance and so is Tiger Roar (as sponsored by Cardsweb) - actually, I've just realised that I've clicked on the wrong one!! I meant to vote for Tiger Roar (although T-Ender is very good too). That Jonny Lyons site is probably best viewed with a built-in pop-up blocker. As for his pic on some of the forums - that is one scary-looking 13 year old!"
