An ex-Football League side, Workington, with their north-western outpost were never going to make likely league opponents for the Tigers until the bizarre decision to promote us to the Blue Square North following the playoff win in 2009.
Our first meeting at Cirencester was one of the most lacklustre displays you might ever see from a City team and the Reds made their long journey home with all three points thanks to two headed goals from set pieces, one in each half.
The return fixture at Borough Park came just after Workington had been hit by flash floods which had destroyed two bridges in the Cumbrian town, one of which was immediately behind the football ground. Having been relegated from the league in 1977 (in place of Wimbledon) the stadium looked as though it hadn't been touched since those heady days. One thing is for sure, you won't get many more scenic journey's to a City away game than you will going to Workington!
Disappointingly after holding out for eighty minutes they scored two late goals to secure victory and do the double against the Tigers who'd experimented with an overnight stay in Lancaster in preparation for getting a positive result.
The two teams met again on the opening day of the 2010/11 campaign, and provided an opportuntity for City to get one of their two longest trips out of the way early doors. Sadly the game ended in defeat again and but for Marc Richards' late consolation goal it would've been the third 0-2 reverse. |
