That quote brought a lump to my throat (not sick either!) because, after all, he's a Scotsman and he's praising up something very English. As far as I'm aware, any team can enter the competiton. It usually runs from the extra-preliminary round in August through to the showpiece Final in May. Almost a thousand teams throw their hats into the ring every season and our own Gloucester City are one of them! Being a Non-League team means that you have pretty much no chance of winning the whole thing, although, Tottenham Hotspur did such a thing way back in 1901. In the modern game though many teams fight for the few places in the competiton proper and hope for a payday against a big side. The Tigers have only reached the First Round on four occasions. When the club first entered just after the Second World War had finished they met Mansfield Town, Norwich City and Bristol City in successive seasons all in first round ties. Little did they realise that it would take almost forty years to repeat the feat. On that occasion the big guns were avoided and our league rivals Dorchester Town were the visitors to Meadow Park. City won the game comfortably 1-0 and created history by reaching the second round proper for the first time. We were drawn away at sleeping giants Cardiff City. Goals from Steve Talboys and Chris Townsend put the Tigers into a 2-0 lead, but the Welsh clubs trainee striker Morrys Scott pulled two goals back in the dying minutes to salvage a draw. He also got on the scoresheet in the replay as City were beaten 0-1. If we'd have won we would've faced first division side QPR at Loftus Road. Of course, where there are ups, there are downs. I can't comment on what might've been bad results in the early years, but in recent times we've been victims of giantkillings by teams from lower leagues. The worst was at home to Wessex League side Thatcham Town but we also succumbed to the likes of Weston, Clevedon and Cinderford.
