Stan Myers
rest in peace

We here at Tiger Roar are saddened to learn of the passing of City great Stan Myers. Stan has recently been overtaken by Tom Webb as the clubs all timne appearance holder and despite obvious ill health had been to two City matches. Stan died on Boxing Day aged 81.

It will come as no surprise to many that tomorrow's game at Corby has fallen victim to the weather. City have now not played a league game since November 13th, which is 45 days ago when they lost 1-2 to Blyth at Whaddon. There is a serious risk of a fixture pile-up at the end of the season with City having played less than a third of their games and they are still in two cup competitions.

David Mehew
signs another

The Boxing Day game against Worcester City at Whaddon has already fallen victim to the weather following a pitch inspection today.

David Mehew has been busy in the transfer market again securing the signature of young striker Lewis Pountney from Stourport Swifts. Reports suggest both he and Hector Mackie arrive at the club on less money than Lee Smith alone so a shrewd bit of business from Boris.

Hinckley United
new date

Tonight's re-arranged league game at Nuneaton has fallen victim to a frozen pitch meaning that another date will have to be found for City to face the playoff hopefuls.

In the meantime the recently postponed game at Hinckley will now be played on Monday February 7th 2011, just two days after the home fixture on the 5th.

Thursday December 16th 2010
Hector Mackie
new signing

Whilst the majority of us would love to see Lee Smith retained in City's colours there was always going to be one stumbling block. Wages.

No doubt as Lee's talent has shone through over the years we've seen him play, so has his price tag and this time it seems that he'll be beyond City's purse so Boris has looked elsewhere for a replacement and found winger Hector Mackie.

Mackie, a Scotsman came to the City bosses attention during his spell with Bath City but has come to the club via St Albans. He still lives in Bath though and the 22 year old is a student at the University of Bath.

Lee Smith
two goal goodbye

City earned themselves a tough looking second round FA Trophy tie at Boston with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Cirencester Town and Whaddon tonight.

An early goal from Mike Symons; a beautiful lob over keeper Matt Bulman give the Tigers an advantage that they never looked like surrendering against a side who had their chance on Saturday.

As half time approached Lyndon Tompkins was guilty of some poor decision making as he climbed all over Symons trying to win a header where there was no immediate danger and the referee had no option but to award a penalty. Lee Smith made no mistake.

And as the second half wore on City were able to cut through the Centurians defence on the counter attack and could've scored more goals than Ricky Ponting gets runs but had to settle for just one more as Smith ended his loan spell in style with a smart finish to a great team move.

set up goal

Well, we have to do it all again after a drab and disappointing derby with Cirencester in the FA Trophy which really failed to live up to expectations.

With ex-City players Matt Sysum, Chris Thompson, Jamie Reid, Lyndon Tompkins, Jody Bevan and Marcus Palmer in the Ciren squad and Kev Sawyer, Lee Smith, Matt Rose and Callum Preece having played for the Centurions the possibility of a tasty encounter was appealling but if there was a plan to wind up Reidy then he didn't take the bait as he was the only midfielder not to get booked!

Seeing Smith in a City shirt was a surprise in himself as it had been stated that the club couldn't afford to extend his loan for another month, so it was therefore ironic that he should be on the end of Darren Edwards' low cross on the hour to put City a goal to the good.

Up to that point the Tigers hadn't really looked that great so to get the goal was a boon but to only hold onto the lead for two minutes was a massive disappointment. A deep cross found its way to Carl Brown, possibly the smallest player on the pitch who re-directed a header back across the face of goal leaving Kev unable to reach it as it dropped into the far corner.

With ten minutes to go a slip by Matt Coupe saw the ball fall nicely for Brown and his pace took him goalwards until his run was halted by a clumsy attempt at a tackle from Tom Hamblin. Whilst one shouldn't condone deliberate foul play, I'm sure the club will take Hambo's red card and a free kick outside the box if it mean't that they still had a chance of the £5000 prize money.

Even at the death Ciren could've won it when Jody Bevan hooked a loose but up and onto the crossbar, but it wasn't to be and it ended all square.

The replay is on Wednesday night at Whaddon (k/o 7.45pm) and which both Tom Webb and Mike Symons returning from suspension City will be an altogether different force.

City : Sawyer, Green, Parrinello, Coupe, Hamblin, Mullings, Smith, Rose, Edwards, Morford (Mustoe 85), Jake Harris (Tambling 73)

Lee Smith
returns to FGR

Tomorrow's scheduled BSN game at Nuneaton Town has already fallen victim to the weather after a pitch inspection at noon today. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday November 21st (k/o 7.45pm).

The lack of action means that winger Lee Smith's loan spell has elapsed without him kicking a ball. He returns to FGR but is expected to available for transfer when the Conference window opens in January. Whether that means he will again return to City remains to be seen.

Mitchell Bryant is believed to have signed for ambitious Zamaretto League South & West division side Hungerford Town. Ollie Barnes has signed for Paulton Rovers.

Mitchell Bryant
released

Some players news from City as two players leave and one joins. We bid farewell to both Mitchell Bryant and Ollie Barnes who make way for new signing Darren Edwards from Bath City.

Both Barnes and Bryant showed touches of class although it seemed that Boris didn't really rate Ollie as a defender and Mitch, for all of his raw talent is just being replaced by someone who has a wealth of experience at this level and knows where the goal is.

Todays game at home to Vauxhall Motors has fallen victim to the cold snap that his hit Gloucestershire this week. City now must go until Boxing day until their next home game.

Tuesday November 23rd 2010
Jody Bevan
Ciren scorer

City will face ex-landlords Cirencester Town in the First round of the FA Trophy after a Jody Bevan header saw them win 1-0 at East Thurrock against Grays Athletic tonight. The game will take place at the Corinium Stadium on Saturday December 11th (k/o 3pm)

Two days later the Tigers travel to Hinckley United for the re-arranged BSBN league match which fell victim to a waterlogged pitch earlier this month.

Also, the County Cup game at *home* to Cheltenham Town Reserves, lets not forget, it is their reserves, definately not their first team as they consider this a reserve team fixture will have to be moved from the proposed 30th November date owing to their first team, not their reserve team, which were due to play us, thats their first team who themselves play a re-arranged game of their own.

vital save

Well that was as tough a ninety minutes as you can get but when the final whistle blew, the cheers from the City fans showed what this win mean't to them.

Since the draw was made three weeks ago this always looked like a tough game and with Chelmsford due to play Wycombe in the FA Cup next week there was always the hope that they'd come here with one eye on that game. If that was the case then it wasn't apparent as the Conference South team had the best of the chances in an ugly win for the Tigers.

If ever a contrast was needed between the two teams then the Chelmsford line-up might not have been their strongest but in goal they had to call on reserve keeper Ashley Harrison as their number one was suspended. Where we have to take a young lad from local Bristol football Harrison's pedigree has seen him win the FA Trophy outright, when Canvey Island beat FGR in 2001!

But David Mehew's team has always been built from up and coming young, local talent and not those on the way down and it was fitting that record breaker Tom Webb should be the winning captain on the day that he became the most capped Gloucester City player in the clubs history.

But it looked as though he may do well to see out the ninety minutes when he launched himself into a high tackle against Chelmsford captain Dave Rainford and was booked. That was probably the only highlight as both teams battled hard but struggled to create a chance of note.

As the game approached half time The Clarets were piling on the pressure and when Kev Sawyer claimed a cross he dropped the ball as he landed awkwardly and was almost made to pay as first Mark Haines hit the crossbar before Sam Higgins tried to blast in the rebound but only ended up by wellying the ball towards the racecourse.

Straight away at the other end Mike Symons had a great chance to put City ahead when in a similar position to where he scored against Hyde he went for panache and tried to lob Harrison but couldn't keep his effort down.

The only goal of the game was scored with the second half just a minute old.

Tom Parrinello swung in a corner that was met at the near post by Darren Mullings in a move that also saw him score at home to Redditch, this time however the keeper was more alert and managed to get two hands to the ball but according to the linesman it had already crossed the line. According to Parrinello it was a foot and a half over.

And this underlines one major improvement that we've seen this season; set pieces. In tight games you just have to take advantage of them and so it proved today with this being the eventual matchwinner.

The Essex side should've equalised when City gave away (yet another) foul in an area where the ball would cause no harm. A deep free kick to the far post was headed back across goal where it was met by the unmarked Anthony Cook who somehow managed to sidefoot wide from six yards.

But as the game opened up City had chances of their own and from a free kick with a bit more luck might've seen the delfection from Mullings' driven free kick go wide of Harrison and in instead of being saved by his legs.

With the clock ticking down there was a real chance that City would have another nightmare midweek replay across the other side of the country when a lovely passing move from the left wing saw substitute Ricky Modeste steal in undetected behind the Tigers rearguard but Kev Sawyer was off his line quickly to smother the dreadlocked strikers placed effort.

And that was it. After four frentic added minutes the final whistle was blown, the City players took their applause and those from Chelmsford surrounded the officials. I think they may still be there now.

fit again

It was a frustrating afternoon to be a Gloucester City fan today as the Tigers surrendered two early goals to a bright Blyth Spartans team.

I'd imagine it was also a frustrating afternoon to be "upstairs" at the club too as just 305 people filtered through the turnstiles at Whaddon Road. A pathetic turnout for a City with a population of over 136,000.

Last season Blyth looked lethargic, yet this time around they were anything but and were in front after little more than five minutes. Steve Davies was guilty of pulling a shirt and the following free kick found Chris Swailes who directed a header beyond Kev Sawyer. If the City defence looked static then they could complain that the kick was taken before the referee's whistle, which the video of the goal shows.

If that was bad luck then City had some good when somehow, after sailing through a massive hole in our defence on a route one counter attack Blyth's John Alexander shot straight at Kev Sawyer when it seemed easier to score.

City should've been give the chance to level matters when Mike Symons turned and volleyed goalwards only to be denied by Phil Cave's block, with his hands, both of them, high above his head. How it was missed by the officials is a mystery and certainly provided fuel for Boris to question the lino's motives.

Though it got worse when despite Sawyer making a decent save from Stephen Turnbull's effort the loose ball wasn't fully cleared and was swung back across the goal for the Blyth man to score with his second bite at the cherry.

A goal back before the break would've given City a great foothold for a second half comeback and it seemed we'd got it when Neil Mustoe's free kick was flicked on by Symo for Lee Smith to volley home but the lino raised his flag, no doubt as retribution to the barracking he'd got from City's manager because there was no way in the world that Smith was offside.

The second half might well've been a different game as City virtually bossed it from start to finish, even moreso when the disappointing Steve Davies was replaced by Darren Mullings. City held firm at the back with fair tactics as well as foul, Neil Mustoe used his experienced to make sure that there would be no breakaway attacks and once he realised that the referee was going to keep his cards in his pocket he used it as license to defend!

Although wave after wave of attack seemed to go down the hill at Whaddon the Tigers didn't really test Mark Gillespie in the Spartans goal other than from shots from narrow angles but moments after Lee Smith was pushed off the ball in what seemed a blatant penalty Will Morford was eased off it in front of the linesman who raised his flag across his chest to award what was probably the afternoon's softest penalty appeal. Smith made no mistake from the spot.

City deserved their goal but try as they might the second wouldn't arrive and the final whistle was warmly recieved by the men in green and white.

another month too!

City have been handed a tough draw in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy; a home tie against Blue Square South front runners Chelmsford City.

It's been almost fourteen years since the two clubs have met but during that spell the Tigers easily had the upper hand against their Essex counterparts with nine wins and a healthy positive goal difference.

Following the news that Lee Smith has signed for another month his FGR teammate Steve Davies has committed himself to the club on a temporary basis too. Both players are likely to be surplus to requiremnets under the new full time regime at the Lawn and may be available for transfer in January.

A football match lacking finesse would be a good description of todays game. And it was such a shame that it turned out that way because in the crowd were Gloucester's mayor Janet Lugg, ex-MP Parmjit Dhanda and City legends Ron Coltman and Stan Myers. They and the other 360 people in attendance deserved better.

The civic dignitaries were there to present Myers and City Captain Tom Webb with awards for their services to sport in Gloucester, Webb is a game away from equalling Myers' record number of appearances for the club.

This game is one that Tom will want to forget though st he and his teammates put in a somewhat sluggish display against a Gainsborough team, that even though reputed to have a large playing budget are languishing at the bottom of the league. that said they still formed an impenetrable barrier as David Mehew's team drew a blank, despite having a full compliment of attacking options.

With a reshuffled back four Neil Mustoe looked out of sorts at right back and almost gave Trinity the lead when he headed against his own crossbar under no pressure, but despite his best efforts from the ensuing corner Gavin Cowan's looping header was adjudged to have crossed the line by the flagging linesman.

With Mitchell Bryant and Steve Davies alternating roles between left wing and centre-forward the Trinity rearguard had to be at their best as Lee Smith peppered them with crosses but there was no way through as Gainsborough took their lead into the break.

At half time there was another presentation, the Pete Chase bursary was awarded to twins Callum and Brandon Preece to aid with the purchase of playing equipment.

The second half almost didn't start for City veteran Mustoe, on the way out to the pitch he caught a stud in a drain cover and was firmly stuck!

Despite hoping that a "team talk" would've seen City make an improvement it was Gainsborough who scored the next goal to kill the game off when Ryan Kendall was found with a lobbed pass and the striker cooly lifted the ball beyond Kev Sawyer.

Tempers flared as the game wore on and Trinity's Leon Hibbert was lucky not to see red for an X-rated foul on Mike Symons whilst substitute Will Morford was unlucky to get a cautioned after he was rugby tackled by a Gainsborough defender. On the touchline City manager Mehew was particularly incensed by the Gainsborough substitutes who were calling for City's players to be booked. Money obviously doesn't buy class.

The sound of the final whistle was almost a relief to the City faithful. it was just one of those games where we could've played until midnight and not scored.

two goals, two games

City's run of good form continued at Stafford today with a hard fought 2-0 win to give them seven points from the last nine and move into ninth place.

In a game where the focus was on the home team dugout with new Stafford manager and ex-England goalkeeper Tim Flowers taking charge of his first game alongside former Leicester defender Matt Elliott it was City's David Mehew who was happier at the final whistle following a game not short of controversy.

Just four minutes were on the clock when Mike Symons gave City the lead. Tom Parrinello's deep free kick was headed into the mixer by Steve Davies and Symo deftly volleyed the ball beyond the dive of Stafford keeper Lee Evans.

Matt Coupe was the victim of an elbow in the face by an opponent that went unpunished but Stafford's Darren Wrack wasn't so lucky as the referee spotted his assault on Symons and produced a straight red card, much to the vocal displeasure of the home fans.

It seemed as though the man in black was feeling the wrath after Wrack and was determined to even the numbers. Coupe himself was booked as his opponent made a meal of the contact from an aerial challenge but the ten men galvanised and were arguably the better team as the half wore on despite Davies and Lee Smith stretching the Rangers defence with good wing play.

Ten minutes into the second half City made a double sub with Mitchell Bryant and goalscorer Symons being replaced by youngster Adam Mann and Will Morford. Mann went out wide on the left as Steve Davies moved up front.

Smith reminded City's fans what he's all about with a wonderful run and shot that went narrowly wide but the hundred or so travelling fans started to get nervous about their teams inability to kill the game as Stafford continued to impress with ten men.

With yellow cards being shown, dramatically too by a referee with a point to prove, City were in real danger of losing another player as Tom Webb and Matt Rose's frenetic midfield harrying fell foul of the laws of the game.

But Ollie Barnes put the game beyond doubt when he prodded the ball home after Rangers keeper Evans fumbled a corner under pressure from Davies for his second goal in two games.

red card

City recorded their second win in a week and did their best to wipe away the memory of that forgettable 0-1 defeat against Harrogate in April with this entertaining 3-2 win against the well backed Yorkshire side.

In a game that had five goals, including a free kick that had it been scored in the Premier League would've been repeated again and again. Added to that we saw a possible handball on the line, a penalty, a red card and a delay for a badly broken leg. Yet there were just 325 paying spectators in the stadium including an away support numbering less than ten, a pathetic turn out from both the people of Gloucester and those travelling from 'oop North.

In a frenetic opening period Harrogate took the lead when a long range free kick from Ciaran Toner proved too hot for Kev Sawyer to hold and the ball bounced off his chest into the path of new signing Kyle Hadley, although the celebrations seemed muted as you could hear a pin drop inside Whaddon Road. The Yorkshire team, in a pink kit to raise awareness for breast cancer were well on top and might've had a second minutes later when Adam Nowakowski drove in a shot that either hit Tom Parrinello on the chest, crossed the line or was punched away depending on who you listened to but the score remained 0-1 and City were lucky.

One thing that Lee Smith has always brought to the team is penalties and so that proved as his run towards goal was halted when he tried to weave a way between Toner and Jake Picton but the latter, who was sent off for Ilkeston at Whaddon earlier this season brought him down with an outstretched leg. After his two penalty misses against Weston there was no way that Mike Symons was taking it and Smudge grabbed the ball and sent Harrogate keeper Kieran Gonzalez the wrong way.

The game was then turned on it's head with two goals in three minutes for City; the first was a wonderful left footed Ollie Barnes free kick from fully thirty-five yards into the top left hand corner before Barnes was involved again when he flicked Parrinello's corner on to Steve Davies who scored with a diving header.

But Harrogate weren't finished and got themselves back within touching distance when another City corner was cleared, albeit with a foul on Mitchell Bryant and Hadley, signed this week on loan from Kidderminster Harriers scored his second goal on his debut when he cut in from the left wing and drilled a shot in off of Kev's near post.

Sadly the second half didn't live up to the first but was notable for the introduction of the fit again Tom Webb plus the horrific sight, for the second time this season of a broken leg at Whaddon Road. After what seemed more of a clumsy tackle than anything from Matt Coupe Harrogate sub Liam Hardy was prone on the pitch, seemingly unfazed as yards away Coupe was being shown a straight red card. Over half an hour later the game resumed with talk of Hardy's foot being at right angles to his leg.

Having been through all of this with Jack Harris we at Tiger Roar wish Liam a speedy recovery and hope that he can recover from such a horrible injury.

The remaining ten minutes were played out mainly in City's half by a resurgent Town and for once the Tigers were able to defend and repel any threat. Added to that City's players made sure that as much of the remaining ten minutes were "killed" and Sawyer himself was subject to some of the rudest barracking being called a "fat c**t" and "Humpty Dumpty", not by the Harrogate six but by their manager!

The injury aside this was a great outcome for City because Harrogate are a well backed team and have a squad full of experienced footballers. The win moves David Mehew's men back into the top half and I expect us to stay there until the end of the season.

Darren Mullings
goal, then injured

City's progress in this seasons County Cup came at a cost at Mangotsfield tonight as goalscorer Darren Mullings left the field with a few minutes remaining with what looked like a dislocated shoulder.

The midfielder had put the Tigers two up with a deflected free kick after Will Morford had given City a first half lead when he scored from close range after the ball had hit the bar. For the home team former City man Jack Pitcher was substituted and failed to impress the City fans in the paltry crowd of 70.

City have a "home" game against Cheltenham Town in the next round. One would expect the team who share Whaddon Road with us to put out a much stronger side than the one they did last year to avoid a repeat of the 4-0 humiliation they suffered.

rest in peace

Tiger Roar has been shocked to hear of the sudden and untimely death of former City defender Nelson Monhon.

Nelson joined the club in the autumn of 2009 after impressing playing for both Minehead and Salisbury City reserves. A powerful defender he made just two appearances as substitute, one away at Truro in the FA Trophy and the other at Stalybridge in the 1-4 BSN defeat before opting to try his luck with Salisbury.

Nelson was just 20 years old.

Reserve keeper Ben Lewis has joined Zamaretto League South & West side Bridgwater Town on a months loan.

timely finish

Steve Davies
impressed on debut

The Tigers took a step towards getting their season on track after a tricky few weeks since the demise of Ilkeston and the loss of the three points gained in the 2-0 win.

With new loan signings Lee Smith and Steve Davies in the starting line up David Mehew's men took the game to Droylsden and had good chances to take the lead when first Matt Coupe drove a shot wide from a corner and then Davies beat the offside trap and Bloods' keeper Paul Phillips but was denied by a defender as he shot at goal.

That was the best that City had as they were pulled up at every other opportunity by harsh officiating but as the Manchester team began to settle into their game they took the lead when former Hyde striker David McNiven got above Tom Parrinello to direct a header beyond Kev Sawyer.

With half time looming Coupe again showed that not only is he a rock at the back but he likes a pop at goal as his attempted lob from thirty-five yards was desperately clawed over the bar by the rapidly retreating Phillips.

With the second half still in it's infancy Mike Symons came on for Ollie Clarke and City were able to shuffle their attackers but Dave Pace's men held firm and probably should've extended their lead when Steve Beck sent a left footed effort narrowly wide before Luke Holden hit the post.

But Droylsden's promotion credentials showed a flaw when it was third time lucky for the impressive Coupe who rose highest at the far post to head home Parrinello's corner to send the home crowd into raptures.

That wasn't it however as the referee found a ridiculous amount of injury time before finally blowing up as City earned a point that moved them back up to twelfth in the table.

The only downside of the day was the poor crowd. If you're a City fan and you're reading this you need to get behind your team. Simple as that.
