Mike Symons missed two pens
Michael Green late tackle
|
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday". Who's idea was it to play another cup game on a Sunday? This had Shortwood written all over it!
On paper it was hard to know what to expect from the game. We'd taken four of Weston's best five players from last years relegated team and they'd taken the bulk of Bridgwater Town's play-off losing team but both the Tigers and the Seagulls had similar records in their respective leagues and knowing City's penchance for short FA Cup runs one could be forgiven for fearing the worst.
City were given the opportunity for an ideal start when Will Morford was tripped in the area but Mike Symons saw his spot kick saved by Lloyd Irish, however the Weston man had moved off his line and the kick was ordered to be retaken. Irish saved it again!
Chances in open play seemed few and far between, City did hit a post from a corner before Irish dived on the ball which was almost forced home before Weston's pocket sized forward Sahr Kabba rattled the frame of the goal when it seemed easier to score. But the away side took the lead when former Bear Killer Kane Ingram ghosted in at the far post to touch home a looping cross from from ex-Tiverton winger Nat Pepperall.
The Tigers lost Mitchell Bryant to a knee injury at half time and Mike Tambling showed glimpses of skill but City were severely lacking width and it showed as Weston killed the game when Jamie Price got in another cross which Ingram rose to head past Kev Sawyer.
The latter stages of the game were forgettable as City didn't look like scoring in a month of Sundays whilst Weston ran the clock down as any team protecting a lead would do. This tactic frustrated the Tigers and tempers threatened to boil over as Ingram made an absolute meal of a late tackle by Mike Green clearly looking to enduce a red card but the City man only saw yellow whilst Symons was also booked for shoulder barging Matt Villis into the stand.

Will Morford 2nd of the season
|
It was a disappointing afternoon for the Tigers at Whaddon Road as they fell to a 1-2 home defeat against last seasons Unibond Champions Guiseley.
With a side including some familiar names from last year; Joe O'Neill (Stalybridge) and Darryn Stamp (Gainsborough) the Yorkshire team faced up against a depleted Tigers XI which was missing Tom Webb, Matt Rose, Mitchell Bryant, Jack Harris, Jake Harris, Tom Hamblin and Ollie Barnes.
The Lions from Leeds to the lead in the fourth minute when striker James Walshaw headed home but Will Morford levelled matters after the break when he was set up by the evergreen Lee Archer. However Walshaw had the last laugh when he netted his second from a disputed free kick to give Guiseley all three points.

Matt Coupe new signing
|
With Marc Richards now somewhere in the USA City boss David Mehew has moved quickly to replace him with the signature of Bath City's Matt Coupe on an eighteen month contract. Coupe was a Tiger a decade ago for a few weeks and has spent the majority of his career since at Twerton Park where he won the Southern League Championship and also the Conference South playoffs.
City's recent good record has received a dent with the not unsurprising news that Ilkeston Town have been wound up and their results removed. We were eighth, but we're now twelfth.
The FA Cup game against Weston has now been confirmed for Sunday September 26th at Whaddon Road with a 3pm kick off. |

Michael Green faces former club
|
The draw for the second qualifying round has thrown up an interesting tie, for five City players at least. We have a home game against Weston-super-Mare.
In the closed season Boris re-signed goalkeeper Kev Sawyer from the Seagulls and he was followed by the trio of Michael Green, Tom Parrinello and Darren Mullings. Since then attacker Jake Harris, another of the Weston team last year has joined, albeit on loan via Newport County.
The two clubs haven't met in a competitive fixture since the 2002/03 season when Frank Gregan's men did the double over Chris Burns' team. In all we have a pretty even record against the Somerset club but those with long memories will remember the last time we faced off in the FA Cup and will want to then forget it as quickly!
The game is likely to take place on either Friday September 24th or Sunday September 26th. |

Will Morford got the winner
Marc Richards fond farewell
|
Those City fans who made the trip to Eastwood today can sit back, relax and be assured that this team, with or without the three points against Ilkeston are top half material this season.
The Tigers currently sit in eighth place.
With an injury hit squad City manager went back to his former club Bristol Rovers to borrow young midfielder Ollie Clarke, a willowy figure who seemed strong and capable on the ball and wasn't afraid to shoot.
Eastwood haven't had the best of starts to their campaign and so it continued today with City looking the better team throughout the first half and more more value than the single goal they scored through Darren Mullings on thirty minutes, but it was some goal. Tom Parrinello laid a set piece back to him and the midfielder drove a shot in off the underside of the bar ala Frank Lampard at the World Cup but the lino was alert and awarded the goal.
The normally reliant Michael Green made his first mistake in a City shirt when his clearance was blocked by Sam Duncum and Lee Stevenson centred to Adam Muller to sweep a shot home. Ollie Barnes almost scored with a cross that Eastwood keeper John Danby did well to scoop from under his crossbar as the scores remained even at the break.
The home side almost scored right at the start of the second half when a header glanced just wide of the post but Will Morford did find the net when he seized on a ricochet before drilling a low shot past the out of position Danby.
Eastwood then heaped on the pressure but were unable to break down a City back eight (!) that held firm as veteran Neil Mustoe then veteraner David Mehew came off the bench to galvanise the Tigers.
The win was a perfect way for globetrotting defender Marc Richards to sign off from his City career.

Mike Symons 4 goals in 7 games
David Mehew supersub!
|
When you're in a tough league the words "ugly" and "win" together can be music to the ears when wins themselves can be few and far between so even though todays 1-0 against Hyde was scrappy, we'll take it.
Injury ravaged City were dealt another blow before the game when Mitchell Bryant pulled up during the warm up and had to be replaced by Will Morford but the striker almost took his chance when he smashed a shot into the post with a driven effort from an angle. His strike partner Mike Symons wasn't having much luck against a referee who was penalising him at every opportunity yet the man in black turned a blind eye to the shove on Morf which would've given Symo the opportunity to score from the spot.
Hyde were growing in confidence throughout the first half and themselves hit the post from a free kick but every other shot seemed to be tamely at Kev Sawyer.
The Tigers (Gloucester, not Hyde) got a rocket up the ass at half time and came out looking much better and scored a goal for their troubles. Mike Tambling played in a lovely pass for Symons bypassing the offside looking Morford and the City man took a touch before shooting through Russell Saunders' legs.
The away side stepped up their game then and looked good on both wings but for all their possession only made Sawyer dive to save once. City should've had another penalty when Symo had his shirt pulled in the box but both referee and linesman ruled it was just outside, despite the City man not getting on the ball until he was in the area!
Hyde were also having personnel problems and had played the whole game with manager Neil Tolson up front so when Will Morford started to struggle with his back injury City manager David Mehew joined the fray and could've even scored had Tamblin's centre been a bit more direct!
The win puts City up to 11th place and will encourage them ahead of next weeks tough trip to Eastwood Town.

Lee Archer new signing
Mike Tambling debut goal
|
What a difference 48 hours makes!
After Saturdays abject display at Solihull suddenly the prospect of entertaining league whipping boys Redditch United wasn't as palatable as it might've been, especially as they'd held Telford to a draw whilst we were tossing it off against the Moors. But there was no need to worry as David Mehew's men put on a masterclass in finishing to condemn the team from the Birmingham new town to a 5-0 drubbing.
Boris had rung the changes in his starting line up with Marc Richards and Matt Rose dropped but a worse fate befell winger Ryan O'Hara who was released. In came Ollie Barnes and Mike Tambling whilst the City manager called on the services of Lee Archer, a 37 year old left winger who used to be in the same Bristol Rovers team as him.
It didn't take long for City to show their true colours that were kept hidden on Saturday as good work from both Mitchell Bryant and Tom Webb from a Mike Symons flick found Tambling in space and he marked his debut with a goal. Redditch fought back and were winning headers at set pieces but their finishing left alot to be desired.
The Tigers started the second half without Captain Tom Webb who had a hamstring injury as Rose filled in for him but it was midfield partner Darren Mullings who got his name on the scoresheet when he ghosted to the near post to flick a Tom Parrinello corner past Redditch's debutant keeper Robert Ambrusic. Six minutes later it was three when Symons was picked out with a pinpoint long pass from Mike Green and the City striker rounded the Redditch number one and dinked a shot into the far corner.
With Lee Smith now at Forest Green City fans may have wondered who'd be on penalties this year and their question was answered when Bryant was clumsily fouled in the box. Symons grabbed the ball, placed it on the spot and sent Ambrusic the wrong way to make it four. Mullings rounded off the scoring with five minutes to go when he capitalised on a mix up in the Redditch defence before calmly stroking the ball home with his left foot.
More of the same against Hyde please City!

Kev Sawyer booked
|
"It was a woeful performance" said City boss David Mehew after he'd seen his side lose 1-2 at Solihull Moors in a game which, after doing the double over the Birmingham side last season many would've expected to see a City win.
Kev Sawyer's goal led a charmed life at the windswept Damson Park right from the start when Ryan Beswick was denied by the City keeper all the way up until two minutes before the break when the Tigers' number one brought down diminutive Solihull striker Dean Lee, got booked and then went the wrong way for Beswick's spot kick.
Boris sent his team out early for the second half and would've been annoyed to see giant striker Adam Cunnington loop a header beyond the reach of his keeper. City only perked up with the introduction of substitute Mike Tambling but Darren Mullings thunderbolt free kick proved too little too late as Solihull made it four defeats in five games for Mehew.

Tom Hamblin bloodied
|
Only a brave man would've bet against anything other than a home win tonight after Telford had so ruthlessly dispatched promotion favourites Gainsborough 5-0 on Saturday and so it became that the Shropshire side recorded their fourth win in four games, albeit only 0-2 thanks to a resolute display of defending from City.
With youngster Jake Harris failing a fitness test on his ankle Ryan O'Hara was restored to the side whilst the impressive Michael Green and Mike Symons both played despite carrying knocks themselves.
The home side pressed from the outset and might've had a penalty when the ball appeared to strike Matt Rose' flailing arm but they should've gone ahead through Andy Brown when the striker got on the end of a header across the face of goal but managed to miss from six yards.
They did eventually take the lead when midfielder Phil Trainer, who looked offside, met a header on and plundered the ball beyond Kev Sawyer despite a desperate lunge from Tom Hamblin. The City centre half then had to leave the field following a clash of heads with for FGR player Alex Meechan.
City started stronger in the second half but were hit by a sucker punch when Trainer burst through a flat footed Tigers back line before finishing with a low left footed drive past Sawyer.
The home fans screamed for another penalty as City continued to defend for their lives but it came at a cost as they were unable to create any sustained pressure in attack. The game finished in controversial fashion when Telford's on loan winger Greg Mills was shown a second yellow card for time wasting, much to the displeasure of the home fans among an impressive crowd of nearly two thousand.

Jake Harris debut goal
Mitchell Bryant shoe'd in
|
After enduring two defeats on the bounce City finally recorded their first win of the season with a fine 2-0 win over Ilkeston Town at Whaddon Road today.
The Tigers were on top for the majority of the game against a side with experienced strikers Jason Lee, Chucki Eribenne and David Graham as well as the much sought after Amari Morgan-Smith, although Lee played at the heart of defence but it was the City strikers who'd be amongst the goals.
Tom Webb had a great chance to give David Mehew's men an early lead but dragged his shot agonisingly wide when Mike Symons fed him a low ball across the penalty area and Symons himself thought he'd scored the opener when Mitchell Bryant's shot fell for him to tap home but his celebrations were cut short by a linesman's flag.
But City's persistence paid off two minutes before the break when Jake Harris, signed on loan from Newport County on Thursday made room in the penalty area to shoot past Ilkeston's highly rated keeper Dan Lowson.
The second half saw Ilson's one and only shot on goal, an effort from outside the box which Kev Sawyer had to get down to get his body behind. But any hope the Derbyshire side had of getting anything from the game was reduced when Jake Picton stupidly put the boot into the grounded Bryant right in front of the referee's assistant. A red card was the only feasible outcome.
With more space to exploit at the back and Ilkeston unable to push Lee into an attacking role Symons got his reward when he drove into the box from the left hand side before taking the ball to a seemingly impossible angle before lifting a shot over Lowson and inside the near post.
Webb had another great chance to get on the scoresheet but sent his right footed effort just wide of the upright from twelve yards before the game ended on a low when Harris had to be helped off after he was hurt in a meaty challenge in the penalty area.
The result will put City in good stead for their visit to leaders Telford United on Tuesday (k/o 7.45pm) at the New Bucks Head.

Jack Harris broken leg
Tom Parrinello skillful
|
City's start to the season got even worse at Whaddon Road tonight, in more ways than one as the game was held up for over half an hour when Jack Harris broke his leg whilst contesting a fifty / fifty ball with Corby's Andrew Hall.
It was the kind of incident which puts the game into perspective as the Tigers went on to lose, as they seemingly always do at home against the Steelmen but the thing on most peoples minds was the condition of the young City player. A statement later posted on the official website confirmed that it was a clean break on both the tibia and fibula. Tiger Roar wishes Jack all the best and hopes for a speedy recovery.
The break in play did Corby no favours as they were well on top at the time and on the resumption City stepped up a gear and Tom Webb had a great chance to score but dug a shot over the bar. Tom Parrinello showed that we've signed a good player when he dribbled his way past two defenders with ease but his final ball to Mitchell Bryant failed to bear fruit. Also Darren Mullings flashed a header just wide of Chris Mackenzie's post just before the interval.
Into the second half and just like the game at Cirencester in April Graham Drury's men came alive to collect all three points. They took the lead through Ben Mackey, a summer signing from Brackley Town who fired home from close range after first Michael Green had cleared off the line for a corner, which itself was headed against the crossbar before falling invitingly for the striker to open the scoring.
City were battling well against a strong and tall Corby back line but managed to get a header on target from one free kick although annoyingly it was aimed straight at veteran keeper Mackenzie. With just a few minutes remaining substitute Steve Diggin fired home from an angle after the referee had failed to spot a handball in the build up as all three points headed back to Northamptonshire.

Darren Mullings quality
Marc Richards consolation goal
|
It was a case of opening days blues for the Tigers as the bookies were proven right as Workington won 1-2 in a scoreline which at times flattered David Mehew's men.
Starting the game with what looked like a 4-5-1 formation that had Darren Mullings playing in behind lone striker Mike Symons the plan seemed to be to stop the Cumbrian team from scoring early doors before taking a more attacking approach later in the game. Plan "B" was called for after the break as the home side got on the scoresheet, had one disallowed and were denied what looked like a penalty.
Although, there was an argument that their goal shouldn't have happened because the scorer Phil McLuckie was only booked when he slid in studs up into Jack Harris. He was indeed McLuckie to stay on and also be on the pitch to convert after Shaun Vipond had danced around both Neil Mustoe and Marc Richards to prevent him with an easy chance to beat Kev Sawyer.
The impressive Mullings had had City's best chance, but the 30 or so fans who'd made the 530 mile round trip were disappointed to see his run, twist, turn and shot fly over the bar. If that was bad luck then City did have some good as first the home side had a second goal ruled out and then Jack Harris got away with what looked like a foul, denying the Reds a penalty.
The second half was a bit different as Ryan O'Hara, who tried his best but didn't seem to have the beating of his opponent was replaced by young striker Mitchell Bryant. However, chances still appeared at Sawyer's goal as Workington hit the post and the crossbar before a Mullings was denied a brilliant equaliser with a save which was just as good as the shot on the turn.
Prior to that chance the Tigers had picked up a couple of bookings with both Bryant and his marker being cautioned after an off the ball incident and Symons saw yellow for deliberate handball.
The Cumbrians did make it two when substitute Matt Tymon stole in ahead of Tom Hamblin at a free kick to leave Sawyer rooted to his line as he headed into the far corner but Richards gave Boris' men a lifeline when he nodded home Tom Parrinello's corner a minute or so later.

Kev Sawyer as good as ever
|
City faced their last real test before the start of the new season with a 1-1 home draw against Blue Square Premier new boys Newport County.
Dean Holdsworth fielded a team that, according to Tim Harris only probably included three possible starters for their game at Darlington next week but that didn't mean that they had a lack of quality with former Salisbury and Woking strikers Robbie Matthews and Giuseppe Sole. The depth in County's squad comes at a cost though, according to reports their budget is a mind blowing £15,000 per week!
For City, Kev Sawyer made a welcome return in goal, although a kit clash denied the Tigers' followers the chance to see him in his lovely orange kit. The big keeper looked as good as ever and pulled off a magnificent save to keep City's lead intact after Darren Mullings has scored from an angle a few minutes earlier.
Sawyer could do nothing about Sole's equaliser though as it was hammered past him in an instant, although Sole himself might've had a red card for a two footed lunge at Jack Harris, although was lucky to get away with a yellow. For City both Mullings and Ollie Barnes were cautioned.
In the second half Newport brought on more of their Conference South romping stars as City weakened their team but it didn't lead to any further goals, especially thanks to sub keeper Ben Lewis who pulled off a magnificent save within two minutes of coming on.

Mike Tambling impressed
|
City won their first pre-season friendly today with a 2-1 victory in Hereford at Pegasus Juniors.
After going a goal behind midway through the first half the Tigers, managed by Adie Harris in the absence of the holidaying David Mehew turned the scoreline on it's head with goals in the second half from trialist Mike Tambling and Ryan O'Hara. Tambling had replaced rolled ankle victim Marc Richards in the first half and slotted into an attacking midfield role in which he looked more and more assured as the game wore on.
Also standing out was ex-Reading youngster Mitchell Bryant whilst some of the City fans were also impressed with James Hix's car!

If you go down to the woods today....
Well, not quite the woods but Stratford Park in Stroud and the only bear on show was Mike Symons as the City squad had an alternative training session deep in the heart of Forest Green territory. After a bout of hard running, including a punishing finale uphill the players took part in a game of hide and seek, some head tennis; Bristol v's Gloucester and Cheltenham v's Swindon before ending with a leisurely dip in the pool.

Olbas new sponsors
|
Another friendly, another defeat although it was at the hands of BSP new boys Bath City with the goal coming from marquee signing Scott Murray.
The Tigers, resplendant in their new blue away kits proudly adorned by new sponsor Olbas were unlucky to lose to Adie Britton's men and put up a good showing. Ex-Reading youngster Mitchell Bryant impressed and could be the pacy replacement that seems to have been lacking whilst Ashley Kington, recently released by Bristol City played in midfield.
City : Lewis, Kite, Harris (Prictor 37) (Hix 74), Barnes, Rose, Kington, O'Hara (Tambling 80), Webb, Bryant, Symons, Parrinello.

David Mehew two year contract
|
City boss David Mehew has been awarded with a two year contract after working on non-contract terms since he took on the first team managers role. The move will protect City if and when bigger clubs come knocking as Boris continues to show that he is among the most promising young managers at this level of the game.
Tonight's friendly at Cinderford ended 1-1 thanks to a late, late equaliser from Mike Symons who curled a free kick beautifully into the top corner. The home team had taken the lead midway through the second half and in all honesty looked better than the Tigers in spells. There were a few plusses to be taken though with Tom Parrinello looking pretty nippy, Charlton Davies imposing in the middle of the park and Codie Truchan looking as though he wouldn't be daunted by the step up to the first team.
City : Lewis, Mustoe (60 Barnes), Truchan, Barnes (46 Rose), Prictor, O’Hara (73 Reece), Webb (46 Parrinello), Davies (64 Mullings), Harris, Mullings (46 Hix), Symons. |

Ben Prictor impressive trialist
|
The first week of pre-season friendlies has given us a bit of a mixed bag with a 3-3 draw at Bitton, to blow the cobwebs away being followed by a far from surprising 0-5 defeat against a team of full time professionals.
At Bitton new signing Darren Mullings got on the scoresheet whilst trialist Ben Prictor impressed by setting up a goal for Mike Symons and then scoring a spectacular equaliser himself. Today was a different matter and after falling behind to an offside goal Carlos Tevez would've been proud of it was one way traffic, although their manager should be concerned that his team of full timers only managed to find the net five times, two of them at the death against a team two leagues below AND at home. Relegation to the BSP beckons. |

With the news that Rob Aldrich may not be available for pre-season Boris has moved quickly to sign giant defender Ollie Barnes from Dorchester Town. Fans will remember the centre-half from his previous spell with the club when he was a youngster on loan from Bristol Rovers four years ago.
Barnes was at training along with several other new signings and trialists at Hartpury College tonight as City look to shape a squad that will improve on last seasons league placing in the Blue Square Bet North. |

Colin Gardner rest in peace
|
We have been saddened to learn of the death of former chairman Colin Gardner at the age of 69. Colin had been ill for a while.
As both former Chairman at City, Minehead and Forest Green Rovers he will be remembered as the man in charge of Chris Burns' team as they rebuilt the club during the early years of the Millenium. Colin's efforts were also appreciated at Bath City where he made a generous donation to help their supporters buy back the club.
City manager David Mehew has again raided Weston Super Mare this time adding midfielder Darren Mullings to his squad. Ex-Bristol Rovers and Torquay United player Mullings will provide competition in the centre of the park as Boris continues to employ the "best players in Bristol" for Gloucester City. |

BS Bet North fixtures
|
The fixtures are out and City have been given the chance to get one of their longest journeys of the season out of the way on the opening day with a trip to Cumbria to face Workington. Last years visit to Borough Park ended in late disappointment with a 0-2 defeat as the Reds made a late march on the playoffs and may well be considered one of the stronger teams this term.
Other standout fixtures are a Christmas and New Year double header with Worcester City, whilst our first home game is a midweek clash against Corby Town on August 17th.
If we are struggling at the end of the season then our run-in looks tough with our last four games against Alfreton Town, Stalybridge Celtic, AFC Telford United and Droylsden!
