Lee Molyneaux Leaves City
|
The comings and goings continue with David Mehew having secured the signatures of two more Weston Super Mare players as both Michael Green and Tom Parrinello are added to the squad. They will link up with Mike Symons, Will Morford, Matt Rose, Neil Mustoe, James Palmer, Tom Webb, Jack Harris, Tom Hamblin and Ryan O'Hara.
Leaving the club however will be Lee Molyneaux who is heading back to his native Hampshire while Lee Smith has taken the chance to play in the Blue Square Premier with Forest Green Rovers, who "earned" a reprieve at the expense of Salisbury City.
Jack Pitcher has surprised a few people with his decision to re-sign for his former club Mangotsfield United. Good luck to Jack, just don't buy a golden goal ticket! |

Jack Pitcher gone?
|
With very little news coming out of the club owing to everyone having a much deserved break one or two pieces of interest is that we have a new, old goalkeeper for next season with Kev Sawyer coming back from Weston-super-Mare. He will be deputised by Ben Lewis although one would hope that Lewis will be given a fair chance to make the number one shirt his own.
Every other player who finished the campaign has been offered terms for next season with the exception of Greg Lake who has been released. One player who will not be staying though seems to be Jack Pitcher who has said his goodbyes on his Facebook page. Good luck to Jack in the future and we hope that he can get back to his best. |

Mike Green thank you and goodbye
|
In any normal circumstances a 0-2 defeat would be seen as a bad result, especially if it were in a cup final, but tonight's loss against Bristol City was a great improvement on last season's 1-5 result in the same tie at the same venue.
The County Cup has a habit of being treated with contempt but when it gives players the opportunity to play on a lush surface like the one at Ashton gate it's hard to see why, especially as City played some of the best quick passing football that they've done for a while. One can only hope that the pitch at our home ground next year is half as good, it'll be just like watching Brazil!
The only disappointment tonight was that we failed to score, although Lee Smith had a great chance to convert from the spot after he'd been brought down but Bristol keeper Stephen Henderson got down well to save. This came just a minute after the Robins (yuck) had taken the lead with their own penalty after Matt Rose had felled giant striker John Akinde and Mike Green was unlucky to see Tristan Plummer's spot kick go in off of his foot.
City struggled to break down a strong Bristol team and went further behind just before the break when a deflected shot from Frankie Artus gave Greener no chance but showed great resolve to keep their professional opponents to just two goals. The best of the action in the second half came when one of Plummer's entourage jumped the barriers to wade into a scrap when the winger had picked a fight with the City midfielder.

Matt Rose is indeed on fire
Neil Mustoe almost scored!
|
Following a disappointing last few weeks to the Blue Square North campaign the City fans, albeit small in number out of a crowd of just 119 at the final match at the Corinium Stadium will finish the season with a Cup Final against Bristol City following this extra time victory over Mangotsfield.
The Bristol team, themselves a shadow of the team that annoyingly used to beat us on a regular basis now find themselves back at their more natural level but they gave as good as they got in a game that offered much more entertainment that the Champions League semi-final which most football fans in Gloucester would've been tuned in to.
Tom Knighton gave the Mango's an early lead as he found room behind the City defence before lifting a shot over reserve keeper Ben Lewis but the clean shaven Matt Rose saw that the scores were even at the break when he headed home from Lee Smith's corner.
In the second half substitute Jack Pitcher, himself a former Mangotsfield player back when they were good made room in the six yard box to head Greg Lake's pinpoint cross past Sam Alexander to give City the lead but Knighton forced extra time when he stooped to divert Danny Haines' shanked cross in off of Lewis' far post.
In the first half of extra time the Bristol team regained the lead when they caught the Tigers napping from a quick free kick with James Pilling shooting between Lake's legs from twelve yards giving the City keeper no chance, but David Mehew's men weren't finished and almost drew level when Neil Mustoe headed into Alexander's hands at the far stick. In the second period though City showed their class to draw level when Will Morford tidied up a goalmouth scramble following a clever cross from Lee Smith before Rose won the game with his second and City's fourth after Alexander had punched Lee Molyneaux's free kick virtually onto his head in front of an open goal.

Mike Green player of the season
|
Ilkeston on the final day of the season will bring back memories, bad maybe, for some City fans who remember the conclusion to the 2003/04 campaign where Chris Burns' team ran long time leaders Redditch United all the way until the last ball was kicked.
And ironically, this day, like that one ended with a single goal victory for the Derbyshire side.
After an arduous last few weeks to the campaign City's players could almost be forgiven for crawling over the finishing line and as good as Ilkeston keeper Dan Lowson is reputed to be those at Cirencester for the clubs last league match at the Corinium left not knowing just how good he was as City failed to test him all afternoon. The only goal of the game came when Jason Lee cushioned a far post header into the path of Amari Morgan-Smith who bravely dived in and nodded the ball home.
City : Green, Mustoe, Aldrich (Harris 68), Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Molyneaux, Morford, Plummer (James 62), O'Hara (Mehew 75). Subs n/u : Symons, Lake

Before the game Lee Smith, Mike Green and Jack Harris were named as joint players of the season. Well done to all three! |

Jack Harris spared Boris' blushes
|
"I haven't lost four games on the bounce since I've been here" were the words that Boris spoke prior to this unwelcome midweek trek to Harrogate, so as the sands of time ebbed away in Yorkshire the City manager must've feared the worst having seen his team go a goal behind late in the game.
But his record was saved with a minute to go when Jack Harris rifled a shot into the roof of the Harrogate net.
Sadly Tiger Roar wasn't present at the game, but neither was the Citizen so thats all we can tell you about it!
City : Green, Mustoe, Aldrich, Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Haynes, Pitcher, Morford, Harris.J. Subs n/u : Molyneaux, Lake, O'Hara, Plummer, Mehew |

Mike Green outstanding
Lee Molyneaux stunning free kick
|
Another day, another defeat, or so it seems with these games every forty-eight hours, still, only Harrogate to go where any City fan who makes the journey deserves either bucketloads of respect or a straightjacket!
Tonight, for the pessimistic among us looked like an away win all the way as Corby, who we seem to royally trounce on their own pitch have also enjoyed their "away" games against us and this was no different as a combination of good luck, Mike Green and good luck kept the scores even until the break.
The second half was an altogether different affair though and when diminutive striker Leon Mettam spun around to arrow a shot across Green and finally beat him it looked as though it might turn nasty but they only scored one more, again through their top scorer following a mazy run and clever shifting of feet before a shot back across the City keeper.
But the goal of the game came in injury time when defender Lee Molyneaux crashed home an unstoppable direct free kick that Corby keeper Tom Cross could only watch. Had City forced a draw after that it would've been floodlit robbery.

Rob Aldrich could've seen red
Jack Pitcher 100% performance
|
There was an eerie sense of déjà vu among the City fans who'd made the trip to the Victoria Stadium today as the Cheshire side won 0-1 with a late, late effort that broke yellow and black hearts after a spirited performance on the back of Thursdays loss at home to Harrogate.
However, despite the poor showing less than forty-eight hours earlier it didn't stop a number of fans going to Northwich in fancy dress with a nun, Spongebob Squarepants, Batgirl, the Joker, a couple of pirates, referee Sarah Garrett and a couple of pirates among the crowd, although the pimp and his whore by Leon and George took some beating!
Not forgetting there was a game on too, it was mainly contested between both goalkeepers, City's Mike Green, who has been offered a contract extension at Bristol Rovers and if there's any justice will soon be their number one and Curtis Aspden, the cellphone waving pervert.
But Wayne Riley, the player who scored the winning goal for Northwich against Charlton Athletic in this seasons' FA Cup was again the difference, when, with just two minutes of normal time remaining he rifled a shot high into Greener's net. It was heartbreaking stuff but something that the City fans have become sadly used to this season.
Positives came from a hard working performance by striker Jack Pitcher, although he didn't get much change out of a strong Victoria rearguard and a solid display from young defender Rob Aldrich, who had Boris' counterpart Andy Preece fuming when he was only shown a yellow card for what could've been deemed a professional foul.
City : Green, Aldrich, O'Hara (Lake 56), Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Webb (Molyneaux 61), Pitcher, Symons (Morford 75), Harris. Subs n/u : Plummer, Mustoe

Ben Lewis impressed
Kyle Haynes clapped off!
|
"Disappointing" is the perfect word to sum up the way that City helped bring an end to their longest ever BSN winning run.
Harrogate, freshly relegated and playing their second game inside three days and pretty much as far away from their Yorkshire home as you can get in midweek should've been there for the taking but Boris' team selection showed that City have a best XI and too many changes will cause havoc over ninety minutes.
In came reserve keeper Ben Lewis, youngster Kyle Haynes, trialist striker Neikell Plummer, Greg Lake at left back with Jack Harris moving into midfield and Lee Smith wide on the opposite flank to his favoured right. Also with key players Marc Richards, Matt Rose and Mike Symons on the bench City struggled to create any fluency and Harrogate took full advantage, scoring the only goal of the game midway through the first half when Peter Knox headed home from close range after a decent effort by David Syers had cannoned off the crossbar giving Lewis no chance.
It wasn't all bad though and goalkeeper Lewis can be pleased with his performance although the same couldn't be said of Haynes who missed a sitter before being substituted to ironic applause during the second half.
When Symo and Rosey came on, too late it has to be said City looked altogether better and almost forced an equaliser on a couple of occasions but Harrogate did just enough to kill the game and earn three valuable points which, if they can catch Vauxhall Motors may well prove invaluable at the AGM Cup.
City : Green, Mustoe, Harris.J, Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Webb, Morford (Plummer 78), Symons (Pitcher 74), O'Hara (Lake 66). Subs n/u : Molyneaux, Aldrich

Marc Richards four for the season
Will Morford at last, a goal!
|
It's official. We're safe!
Congratulations to Boris, Adie the backroom staff and the squad for completing their main objective with five games to spare, just as one of todays goalscorers Marc Richards predicted in his interview with Tiger Roar two months ago!
In a game which started with more excitement in the first five minutes than the rest of the half Stafford were very unlucky to not take the lead when Fabrice Kasiama mugged Neil Mustoe by the corner flag before centreing the ball with a cross shot using the outside of his left foot leaving Mike Green standing as it dipped and deflected off of the crossbar before bouncing away to safety. Then at the other end City took the lead from a corner when Jack Harris' low set piece was powerfully glanced home by Richards for his fourth goal of the season. Stafford were the better team for large parts of the first half as City's goal led a charmed life but they should've been reduced to ten men when striker Nick Wellecomme aimed an elbow at Richards and connected but only received a talking to by the referee.
The game was over not long into the second half when Will Morford, yes, Will Morford scored City's second with an unstoppable angled low shot from left side of the penalty area. Never has a goal been so warmly received!
The visitors from Birmingham looked distinctly disinterested from that point onwards and the game took on the feel of a dead rubber, especially after a flurry of substitutions where the game lost it's rhythm. The three points take City above Rangers in the table and for the first time this season sees David Mehew's men on a three match winning run whilst at the same time putting one over on Stafford for their undeserved victory at Marston Road before Christmas.
City : Green, Mustoe, Harris.J, Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Webb, Morford (Plummer 78), Symons (Pitcher 74), O'Hara (Lake 66). Subs n/u : Molyneaux, Aldrich

Jack Harris matchwinner
Tom Hamblin free kick expert!
|
As recently as a month ago there was doom and gloom in the air among fans of Gloucester City after they'd seen a ten point relegation cushion evapourate along with hearing the news that the Corinium had failed the ground grading and a return to the Southern League looked a distinct possibilty. However, with the off the field matters settled todays superb 1-0 win at the New Bucks Head against playoff hopefuls AFC Telford United has see City aquire an impressive ten points from the last eighteen, pushing thoughts of relegation firmly to the backs of our minds.
Boris started with the team that did so well at Blyth and gave as good as they got against a Telford team who were attacking the closed off away end, whilst City's impressive throng of followers livened up the atmosphere on the home terrace. And that atmosphere spiked after thirteen minutes when Jack Harris was first to react and fire the loose ball intoo the roof of the net when Ryan Young could only parry Tom Hamblin's excocet of a free kick.
That turned out to be the only goal of the game but the home side, although not in great form did come close on one or two occasions, striking a post with a header from a corner and in the very last minute forcing a save from Mike Green at his near post.
City's best chance of increasing their lead came a few minutes into the second half when Will Morford's backheel gave Lee Smith room shoot, but he could only drage his shot wide with his left foot. Smith had been quiet since the second minute when he'd been the victim of a hit 'em hard, hit 'em early type challenge from his marker leaving him with a three inch gash on his leg.
Vauxhall Motors cannot now escape the relegation places and whilst Harrogate can they'll need to win almost as many points over the next six games that they've attained all season. This leaves City needing a win and a draw from their six games to be mathematically certain of survival.
City : Green, Mustoe, Harris.J, Richards, Hamblin, Rose, Smith, Webb, Morford, Symons, O'Hara. Subs n/u : Molyneaux, Plummer, Lake, Aldrich, Mehew

City home game against Corby Town has been shoehorned into Thursday April 22nd with a 7.45pm kick off. The County Cup match with Mangotsfield is likely to be played on the Tuesday after the final game of the season, meaning that the final, if we win, at Ashton Gate will be two days later or even played during pre-season 2010/11. |

Ciren Town thanks and goodbye
|
Not much happening on the pitch for City this week with todays scheduled home game against Corby Town falling victim to the current wet spell, meaning that a date willl have to be found for not only that game but also the County Cup semi-final from midweek against Mangotsfield United which was also rained off.
However, on the field matters have overtaken those on it with the news that City will be able to compete in next season's Blue Square North thanks to their groundshare agreement with local side Cheltenham means that all of the time and effort put into getting us here hasn't been wasted.
Thanks to our friends at Ciren for the warm welcome, we'll miss you! |
