Lee Smith
No chips please
Home grown City star Lee Smith has pulled out of a deadline day transfer to Championship hopefuls Chippenham Town at the eleventh hour after agreeing terms on a £5000 deal. Smith has been a target for the Wiltshire club ever since his wingplay devastated the Bluebirds in the FA Cup last season as the Tigers hit three second half goals to turn a 1-3 deficit into a memorable victory.

With ongoing budget constraints Chris Burns would have reluctantly agreed to let his current best player go but the transfer fee, worth little more than half up front would've been seen as derisory considering that time and effort put into turning the hopeless striker of four years ago into the player that he is today.

The fact that Lee doesn't drive is a major factor in the decision and the journey to Hardenhuish Park is far removed from the route flown by a crow in whatever direction you choose. Although this doesn't mean that the close season won't see more interest as he's clearly ambitious and if Gloucester City can't fulfil his dreams then I'm sure the Coney Hill youngster's future will lie elsewhere.

In a parting shot Chippenham Chairwoman Sandie Webb posted on their forum.

Chris Thompson
Missed a sitter
Lovely day, local derby, healthy crowd and a crap game.

Unfortunately this afternoon's match failed to yield any goals although Chris Burns will probably be pleased with a point against Brian Hughes' team of robots. It wasn't a dirty game yet there were seven bookings, five of which were for City (Addis for diving, Lyndon, Thommo and Muzzie for fouls and Griff on the advice of the linesman). The closest City came to scoring was a good save from a Lee Smith volley and Chris Thompson missing an open goal when it looked easier to score. Ciren were even awarded a penalty for a foul three yards outside the box but common sense prevailed and it was pulled back for a free kick.

If you can bear it, the match report is here and photos are here.

The Ladies team were in action yesterday in their last home game of the season but they failed to finish a good year with a flourish by going down 2-3 to Exeter City. The Devon side took the lead before Helen Wood equalised with a direct free kick that would make David Beckham stand up and applaud. However a header from a corner and a terrible own goal by Jo Thompson put the game beyond City and Wood's second free kick was merely a consolation.

Daryl Addis
Late goal sealed win
For just the second time in my memory of being a fan City travelled to Halesowen and came away with all three points. Late goals from Lee Smith and Daryl Addis came after a game that was shocked into life with the tenth minute sending off of the home teams Ian Cooper after he'd stamped on Chris Burns. Despite having a spate of chances at the start of the second half the home team couldn't capitalise and the Tigers came away with a great win.

For photos from the game click here and for a match report here.

The Ladies follow Wednesdays 2-0 win against Team Bath tomorrow with a game against Exeter City at Meadow Park (k/o 2pm). The bar will be open so come along for a few drinks as you cheer them to glory!

Monday 21st March 2005
Lyndon Tompkins
three match ban
Thanks to the scenes following City's win against Bath City which saw opponent Sam Bailey run and headbutt Lee Smith, both Lyndon Tompkins and Neil Mustoe have been found guilty of violent conduct and will miss the last three games of the season. Whilst Bailey was sacked he has since been employed by league leaders Chippenham Town and is set to pick up a three match ban of his own. Who says that cheats, liars and thugs don't prosper?!!!

If you're doing nothing on Wednesday evening then get down to Meadow Park to support the Ladies who take on Team Bath under the lights (k/o 7.45pm).

Sunday 20th March 2005
Lorraine Johnson
Goal at each end
Even though they lost 2-5 against Bristol City at Almondsbury this afternoon the City Ladies can hold their heads up high thanks to a superb performance against Premier League opposition including England midfielder Rachel McArthur. With Sian Rollings taking her turn in goal she did well to keep the Robins out until midway through the first half when she was beaten by a header from Darel Poole, although a foul on Grace McCatty and successful penalty from Helen Wood saw the scores level at half time.

City continued to look for openings but the home side took the lead when Lorraine Johnson turned a cross into her own net before the Premier Division side stepped it up and Angie Tinson notched a quick hat trick. Johnson made amends for her own goal with one at the right end in injury time but it was too late and Bristol City progress to the final.

Click here for a few photos and visit the Bristol City Website for a match report.

Back to Men's football and City dropped a place to sixteenth in the table this afternoon thanks to Team Bath's single goal victory over Grantham Town.

Saturday 19th March 2005
Dave Wilkinson
Goal chalked off
There was to be no fairytale second win against a title hopeful for the Tigers at Meadow Park this afternoon as Chippenham went home with a flattering 0-3 victory. Chris Burns' men had the best of the ball all through the game but the lack of a true strike partner for Daryl Addis showed as we made the chances and didn't put them away whilst the Bluebirds did.

Dave Gilroy tapped in the opener midway through the first half after a free kick wasn't cleared before Tom Webb was caught dwelling on the ball and James Constable netted the second. Despite heavy City pressure which saw Lee Smith denied a penalty and Dave Wilkinson have a goal ruled out for offside it was the table toppers who got the goal when Gilroy was left unmarked at the far post to tap in to complete his brace.

There are some photos of the game here and a match report here.

City Ladies are in action tomorrow against top league side Bristol City in the semi final of the GFA cup at Almondsbury (k/o 1.45pm). Come along and support the Tigresses, they'll need it!

Sunday 13th March 2005
Lorraine Johnson
Hit the post
City fell at the final hurdle of the Pat Sowden Trophy this afternoon as Frome Town won at Meadow Park for the second time this season. The impressive looking Somerset outfit put in an assured display and a goal midway through the first half was complimented by two more after the break as City struggled to find a way past their opponents. Lorraine Johnson came closest for the Tigresses when she hit the post with a dipping volley while Grace McCatty saw her shot from a goalmouth scramble cleared off the line.

Hard luck girls, there's always next year!

Lee Smith
Winner at Histon
At the bookies we were 5/1, those City fans present (before the game) didn't think we'd stand a chance, the league table suggested we'd be tonked but Chris Burns' men proved us all wrong with an awesome display and a superb 1-0 win at Histon this afternoon.

Despite missing Lyndon Tompkins through suspension and Jimmy Cox through injury the gaffer shuffled his pack to keep Chris Thompson in midfield and at times seemed to be operating with one up front. But although the home side threatened once or twice they never looked like scoring and with five minutes to go Lee Smith stole in at the far post to prod the ball home and give the Tigers three well earned points.

Click here for the match report and here for some photos.

The Ladies team are home tomorrow afternoon against Frome Town in the semi-final of the Pat Sowden Trophy (k/o 2pm). The bar will be open so come on down and support the fairer half of the club to glory!

Awesome!

Tuesday 8th March 2005
Yvette Kemp
In goal at Penzance
The Ladies team were surprisingly beaten 0-2 at Penzance on Sunday as they pretty much fell out of the hunt for second place in the SWWFL. Another reshuffle saw Yvette Kemp in goal although the team were buoyed with new signing Jade Pollock from Forest Green Ladies. Despite having the better of the chances things were never destined to go their way as fortune favoured the home team in black and white, ably assisted by the officials, also in black and white!

Helen Wood had a shot saved by the keeper who was out of her area, then had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the first half although it did seem that she had held her run perfectly and later on as she was about to pull the trigger from eight yards out the man in black blew for half time!

The second half was no better as Lorraine Johnson was fouled in the move which saw Penzance score before a late breakaway from an offside position killed the game with a second. City's Grace McCatty was booked during the protests.

Click here for some photographs and here for a report.

Saturday 5th March 2005
Dave Wilkinson
Harsh decision
It was a case of two points dropped rather than one gained as Grantham earned a draw at Meadow Park this afternoon, City though will point to the referee as a reason why they didn't fully profit as the Gingerbreadmen saw Dave Wilkinson's goal disallowed for a push on the goalkeeper although Marco Ziccardi seemed to lose the flight of the ball rather than be impeded and Lee Glover's late equaliser was helped by Neil Griffiths being shoved out of the way by a Grantham player. Daryl Addis had opened the scoring for City midway through the first half.

Click here for some photos and here for a match report.

The Ladies team make the mammoth trek to Penzance tomorrow as they continue their challenge for second place in the league. Tiger Roar will be there so check back later in the week for action shots from the game.

Sunday 27th February 2005
Grace McCatty
Winning goal
It was a real battle at Meadow Park this afternoon as the City Ladies team were made to work hard for three points against their counterparts from Yeovil Town in this vital South West Women's Football League encounter.

City had the best of the early action and took the lead when Helen Wood rounded the goalkeeper and squared the ball to Tsileka Perry who tapped into the empty net. Perry got the second moments before the interval when she charged down the keepers clearance and rolled the ball home but the main talking point was how a penalty wasn't given when Wood was rugby tackled to the ground.

The Tigresses were caught cold in the second half when two goals in a minute brought the scores level. Stand in keeper Donna Turner could do nothing to stop first a penalty then a low drive into the far corner but Grace McCatty started and finished the move which brought the winner as she slammed the ball home after Mouse had held the ball up in the area.

Saturday 26th February 2005
Neil Mustoe
Another yellow card
Following two wins on the bounce City came tumbling back down to earth with a whimper at The Walks today as they surrendered to a capable but not spectacular Kings Lynn team by the odd goal in one. Former Cambridge United, Woking and Hitchin Town striker Darren Hay netted the games only goal midway through the first half but manager Chris Burns will be disappointed with the three yellow cards that his charges picked up in a far from physical encounter.

Click here for photos from the game and here for a match report.

Following the after match action against Bath City at Meadow Park last Saturday both Lyndon Tompkins and Neil Mustoe may find themselves facing a spell on the sidelines after their involvement in the Sam Bailey incident was included in the referee's match report. They won't however face the same punishment as Bailey though who has been sacked by the Romans.

The City Ladies are at home today in the South West Women's league as they take on Yeovil Town hoping to move back up to second in the table. The game kicks off at 2pm, entry is free and the bar is open.

Sunday 20th February 2005
Helen Wood
Superb free kick
City Ladies cruised through to the next round of the Gloucestershire County Cup at Quat Goose Lane this afternoon by beating hosts Cheltenham Town 5-1.

Jodie Hennessy charged down a ball in midfield before running on and slotting in from a wide angle for the first before Helen Wood netted with a twenty-five yard free kick for City's second. Mouse gave the Tigresses an insurmountable lead into the break with a superbly finished bicycle kick.

With the wind now in their faces the yellows continued to dominate and Tsileka Perry got the fourth with a cross that crept under the crossbar before Wood almost made it five from the penalty spot but it was disallowed due to her scoring with the rebound after it had hit the crossbar and come back to her. Ian Powell gave U-14 striker Hayley Appleby an opportunity to impress and she almost scored with her first touch before Cheltenham pulled one back. However with pretty much the last kick of the game Appleby did find the target to complete the second five goal rout of the season against the Robins.

Saturday 19th February 2005
Jimmy Cox
Two goal hero
For the first time since October, and for only the second time this season City have won two games on the bounce. Local rivals Bath City became the second team to fail to break down a stubborn Tigers defence as Jimmy Cox netted twice against one of his former clubs. A goal by Jimmy Benefield with twenty minutes to goal wasn't enough as City gained three points to move up a place in the league table and close the gap of the Romans.

Not only did Bath employ a dirty tricks campaign during the game (see below) but after the final whistle defender Sam Bailey allegedly planted the nut on a City player. He was red carded in the dressing room.

Go here for photos and here for a match report.

It was a well timed win for Chris Burns' men as both Team Bath and Dunstable Town pulled off victories against Rugby United and Aylesbury United respectively. City are now eight points clear of the dropzone but will not rest until we're mathematically safe from relegation.

Marvin Thompson
Injury doubt
By a strange twist of fate both Gloucester City AFC and Gloucester RFC host Bath in their respective sports tomorrow. Whilst we aren't interested in the oval ball game, the big match sees Gary Owers' Bath City come to Meadow Park (k/o 3pm) to face Chris Burns' rampant Tigers. The gaffer is likely to be missing due to continued sciatica and Marvin Thompson, who impressed against Hednesford may not make the starting line-up either due to a calf strain.

Vistors to Meadow Park from today will be pleased to hear that the Castlemeads section of the Gloucester South-West bypass has opened and those travelling from the north and west can reach the ground much easier than before.

Click here for a crudely drawn map showing the route.

Tuesday 15th February 2005
Lee Smith
Two priceless goals
Gloucester City 2-0 Hednesford Town. Big win. Huge. No, MASSIVE.

After the despondent defeat at Aylesbury on Saturday the Tigers returned to action in this re-arranged fixture against the Pitmen, who, legend has is just cannot win away in midweek. Their run continued tonight thanks to two Lee Smith goals, the first a header on the stroke of half time and the second a superb half volley from the edge of the penalty area to give City three priceless points.

There are a few photos at Tiger Images and a report here.

In the other games played tonight our basement buddies Stamford lost at Bedford whilst Hemel Hempstead Town were held to a draw thanks to a late Rugby United equaliser. We remain in sixteenth place but the win gives us a nice cushion above the relegation places.

Sunday 13th February 2005
Grace McCatty
Head injury
In a hard fought game at Yeovil, City came back from a goal down to beat their hosts 2-1 in the Quarter-Final of the Pat Sowden Trophy. The home side were on top for the best part of the first half as City struggled to find their way and it was no surprise when Yeovil scored.

In the second period though, City found their feet and eventually got back into it when Jodie Hennessy turned in a corner and then Helen Wood bagged the winner by finishing off some great wing play from Jodie.

However, the win didn't come without incident as both the Yeovil number six and Grace Smith (who'd already been subbed) were red carded after they came to blows following a heavy challenge on Tsileka Perry. City still managed to finish with ten players though when Grace McCatty sustained a nasty cut across her eyebrow following a clash of heads.

City will face Frome Town in the semi-final at Meadow Park on March 13th.

See some photos from the game here.

Saturday 12th February 2005
Jimmy Cox
Should've scored
City travelled to Aylesbury today and although the game was much closer than the contest at Meadow Park three weeks ago, the Ducks still won without much of a fight. Sterner defending kept the home side down to two goals but other than a chance for Jimmy Cox on the stroke of half time and a shot just wide by the fit again Adie Harris in the dying minutes the Tigers never threatened. We are now just three points off the relegation places and five points from safety.

Photos are now at Tiger Images and the report is here.

Solihull Borough defender has been spared the embarrassment of having two own goals credited to him as both Jimmy Cox and Daryl Addis have been awarded their respective strikes at Damson Park two weeks ago.

Sunday 6th February 2005
Helen Wood
Hat trick at Bath
It was a case of third time lucky for me today as that's how many visits to Twerton Park it has taken me to see Gloucester City win in Bath. However, this was Ladies football and despite putting up quite a fight the home team eventually succumbed to City's pressure as they were beaten 5-1. Helen Wood scored the opener before Bath grabbed a quick equaliser but Yvette Kemp (with her ass) and Jodie Hennessy put the Tigresses two goals ahead. Mouse grabbed another two in the closing stages to put the game beyond doubt.

Click here for some photos from Twerton Park.

As original opponents Hednesford Town were in action defending the FA Trophy that they won last year City didn't have a game yesterday, but results at the lower reaches of the table has seen a five point gap open above the Tigers.

The game away at Halesowen Town, scheduled for Saturday March 26th has had it's kick off brought forward to 12.30pm to avoid a clash with the Wales v's England International match.

Sunday 30th January 2005
Michael Noakes
Injured on full debut
Another game, another draw, although this one at Solihull Borough yesterday may have added importance at the end of April as it stopped the Birmingham club's impressive winning run and prevented them from gaining ground on us. The point takes us back up to sixteenth place.

The Tigers took the lead midway through the first half when Jimmy Cox pressured Boro's Pete Barry into putting through his own goal but City were unable to clear a corner and the Solihull defender made amends by netting at the proper end. A header by Matt Hawker gave the Brummies a lead at half time. In the second period Dave Wilkinson and Daryl Addis scored for City before a deflected shot on the turn by Hawker ended the game with City's fourteenth draw of the season.

Unfortunately the game was marred by a nasty injury to youngster Micheal Noakes, making his first start in a City shirt when he appeared to twist as he went down. He was taken away with a bloody leg although it was later confirmed that he hadn't broken it. Micheal is however likely to be sidelined for the next month.

Saturday 22nd January 2005
Daryl Addis
Joined by his brother?
Sorry to be pessimistic but after todays showing it's clear that we're in serious danger of being relegated back to Division One West in April. Aylesbury United, easily one of the best teams to visit Meadow Park this campaign bettered the Tigers in every department and left with an easy three points.

Chances were even in the first half although the Buckinghamshire side were in overall control so it was no surprise when Paul Edgeworth put the Ducks ahead seconds before the break. Two goals early in the second half from Leon Gutzmore and Drew Roberts sealed what was an easy win for our visitors.

Click here for a match report and here for a few photos.

It looks likely that Daryl Addis' younger brother Chris will be joining City from Cinderford Town after he was released by the Forest of Dean club. Neither of the Coleford based players can drive and Chris has found it difficult to commit to training at the Causeway following Daryl's move to Meadow Park in October.

The home game against Hednesford Town, originally due to be played on February 5th but postponed due to their defence of the FA Trophy has now been re-arranged for Tuesday February 15th, with a 7.45pm kick off.

Wednesday 19th January 2005
Andy Varnham
Cheated out of a goal
City completed an embarrasing quadruple record at Meadow Park by being knocked out of the fourth cup competition at the first attempt this season. Street did it in the FA Cup, Kings Lynn in the FA Trophy and we also bowed out of the Gloucestershite FA Cup at the first time of asking too.

However, last night's defeat against Div One West side Paulton Rovers in the Southern League Cup wasn't without controversy as City had a perfectly good last minute goal from youth teamer Andy Varnham chalked off as well as a cast iron certain penalty when Daryl Addis was pulled down in the box. Keith Knight and Jimmy Cox hit the post and the visitors may've been down to ten men had the ridiculously lenient referee taken action against the dangerous and petty fouling of the Somerset team.

Read the match report here.

Sunday 16th January 2005
Dan Avery
Thunderbolt free kick
The City youth team progressed to the final of the County Cup with a hard fought 3-0 win over Cadbury Heath at Meadow Park this afternoon. Goals from captain Andy Varnum, one a brave diving header and the other a smart dash with a confident finish plus a superb Dan Avery free kick saw the young Tigers through to face Shortwood United in the final.

There are a few photos from the game here.

The Ladies were unable to play their County Cup tie at Newent Town due to a waterlogged pitch, the reserve team however tonked Cheltenham Town 7-2.

Following Hednesford Town's victory over Worcester City in the FA Trophy our home match on 5th February has been postponed.

Saturday 15th January 2005
Chris Thompson
Conceeded penalty
For once City fans were grateful for a point following the 2-2 draw at Hemel Hempstead Town this afternoon. The difference between the teams in the first half was a Grant Carney penalty after Chris Thompson had been suckered into giving away a foul. The equaliser came midway through the second period when Jimmy Cox finished off a Keith Knight corner, but two minutes later a defensive lapse by Chris Burns let in George Fowler for a shock goal. Daryl Addis saved the day though by beating the offside trap and netting from an acute angle.

Read the match report here and see a few photos here.

Sunday 9th January 2005
Lorraine Johnson
Superb Hat trick
City Ladies had a great win at Meadow Park today with a 4-0 victory over Penzance, with City MP Parmjit Dhanda in the crowd the Tigresses took a three goal lead in a wind assisted first half. The first came when Jodie Hennessey followed up when Lorraine Johnson's shot was blocked, but the striker wasn't disappointed as she struck twice before the break before lobbing the keeper in the second half to complete her hat trick.

Congratulations to the Supporters Trust as yesterday saw the total funds raised pass £100,000. Who would've thought that would've been possible given the situation that the club found itself in during those dark days of the Millenium.

Here's to reaching £1,000,000!

Daryl Addis
Two goals and more
Following a spate of poor performances and poor results City took it out on long time foes Rugby United at Meadow Park this afternoon. The Tigers scored six of the best through Wilko, a comedy own goal by Utd keeper Mike Payne, two from Daryl Addis, a wondergoal by Keith Knight and a memorable strike for youth teamer Eddie Rimmer. Robbie Beard got the consolation for the Midlanders from the penalty spot just after half time.

The match report is here and the images are here.

The City Ladies are in actiuon at Meadow Park tomorrow when Penzance make the long trip to Gloucester. The game kicks off at 2pm so come along for what is usually an entertaining afternoon.

Neil Mustoe
"RESPECT"
Just like the man whose just lost his dog, City simply cannot hold onto a lead. In a game against table toppers Merthyr Tydfil, in which the Welsh side looked like a poor mans Champions elect Chris Burns' side twice went in front.

Jimmy Cox opened the scoring with a brave header and the Martyrs weathered a Tiger storm before Craig Steins stole an equaliser. Chris Holloway put the away side ahead with a deflected shot before a Burns free kick and another from Cox put City's noses in front, but former Tiger Jon Holloway headed a late equaliser to end the game in yet another draw.

Chris Burns had played in the hole behind the mobile front two in an interesting formation which brought the best out of both Addis and Cox, but the gaffer can't be expected to play there every week. So, with Weston Super Mare striker Adie Mings in the ground, two plus two equals new signing.

Read the report here and see some images here.

If you're a fan of both Ali G and City captain Neil Mustoe then Tiger Roar can make your dreams come true, just click here to see the best video EVER!.

Tiger Roar has reached a bit of a landmark today. The website started way back in 1998 but failed to complete a full season until 2002, since when it has been going strong. Several features have been added along the way and we have today passed the ONE GIGABYTE mark on the server, with over two thousand good sized photographs and over a hundred video clips our football club has never been better represented on the Internet.

Sunday 2nd January 2005
Matt Bath
teflon gloves
It was an unhappy New Years Day for City yesterday as they meekly surrendered the points to Cotswold rivals Cirencester Town. In a wind and rain affected game the home side adapted to the conditions better than the Tigers to win with a second half strike from Darren Robison which Matt Bath fumbled into his own net.

Read the match report here and see a few photos here.

League leaders Merthyr Tydfil are the visitors to Meadow Park tomorrow (k/o 3pm) to provide a stern test as the Tigers look to get safety points and avoid being embroiled in a relegation scrap. Wing back Lee Smith must surely be a doubt after limping out of yesterdays game with a leg injury and young hopeful Jamie Reid must be a favourite for a first start.

At the Merthyr game the Supporters Trust will be holding a collection on behalf of the Gloucester Citizen and UNICEF in aid of last weeks terrible natural disaster in South East Asia. Please dig deep and donate all that you can afford for these poor souls less fortunate than ourselves.

To add to a weekend of woe the Ladies team today lost 3-4 at Dorchester Town. They clawed their way back from two goals down but strikes from Helen Wood, Lorraine Johnson and Laura Stephens weren't enough to avoid defeat.
