Jimmy Cox Goal in shock defeat |
Memories of Clevedon Town, Weston-Super-Mare and Thatcham Town came back to haunt us this afternoon as Street completed a shock 2-3 FA Cup victory over the Tigers in deepest Somerset. The competition itself is not only a chance of a financial boost for smaller clubs but also a chance to get some much needed media coverage, both of which have now been lost.
Jimmy Cox gave City the lead in the first half from the penalty spot after a defender put his hand to Lee Smith's pass but two second half goals in a few minutes from a resurgent home team rocked Chris Burns' men. Karl Bayliss, wearing the Captain's armband on his last appearance for the Tigers before retiring headed the equaliser, but the City players were visibly shaken by the award of yet another penalty (the sixth against us so far this season) which Matt Bath couldn't keep out.

Mike Cook New Cinderford boss
Karl Bayliss Last game? |
City's fans were shocked this week to hear of the sudden departure of Assistant Manager Mike Cook to take up the managers hotseat at Cinderford Town. The Forest of Dean club had parted company with previous boss Phil Mullen in the week and wasted no time in offering Cook the chance to fastrack his managerial career at the Causeway. Chris 'Digger' Gardner, who has been coaching in an unpaid capacity at Meadow Park will become Cook's assistant as he attempts to drag Southern League Division One (West) side out of their recent slumber.
Early suggestions say that Keith Knight will be offered the chance to fill the role occupied by Cook at Meadow Park as assistant to Chris Burns. Karl Bayliss has also announced that he will retire from playing after being plunged into Andy Hoskins' role following the injury to the big striker. Baylo is no longer able to stand up to the strain of football at this level and due to home and work commitments may leave Gloucester City AFC altogether. It means that we now go from having four coaches to two player coaches. A few new signings maybe?
The news has come as a hammer blow to Burns ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round match against Street (k/o 3pm) in Somerset. Our opponents play at the same level as Bristol Manor Farm, a team we faced and overawed last year in a 5-0 victory as the Tigers made progress without breaking into a sweat. Burns will be forced to play himself due to an injury to Neil Griffiths and the late arrival of Adam Howarth. It has also been suggested that young striker Lee Davis will follow Cook to Cinderford, therefore giving summer find Kenny Stiles a greater chance to stake a claim for a starting role.
For supporters travelling to the game tomorrow it is best to approach along the A39 from J23 of the M5. Street is 15 miles from the motorway and as you head into town the ground is on the left hand side of the old road into the town centre. Get there early, parking is very limited. |

Jo Thompson Mystery red card |
The Ladies team were beaten 2-4 away at Whaddon Road last night in controversial fashion despite having the best of the game. Helen Wood scored twice for the Tigeresses to give them a half time lead but two goals offside goals and a soft last minute penalty gave the Robinettes the points. City's Jo Thompson was sent off for a professional foul, although reports suggest that she wasn't the last player by far. Bad luck girls.

City's away match at Grantham on Saturday 9th October has had the kick off brought forward from 3pm to 12.30pm to avoid a clash with the important England v's Wales World Cup Qualifier. Fans making the trip up to the New Kesteven Binoculardome are invited to watch the game at Grantham's social club. |

Chris Thompson Almost scored |
The Tigers continued their recent recovery with a point at Stamford thanks to a goalless draw. Veteran striker Karl Bayliss defied the years to put in a strong performance up front partnering Jimmy Cox but Chris Burns' men were unable to find a breakthrough. The result leaves City in but has also helped halt the losing run ahead of next Saturdays FA Cup match at Street.
See the photos , the report and a few videos .
Rumours yesterday suggested that City's move to bring Lee Jeffries back to Meadow Park have been scuppered by Yate's decision to put him on contract.
Former Chairman Colin Gardner has posted on the that Chris Burns has not applied for the vacant managerial position at The Lawn. This should allay fears from the Meadow Park faithful that the popular manager would be leaving. |

Lee Jeffries Seven days notice |
Chris Burns has made moves to shore up his defensive frailties by putting in seven days notice of approach for Yate Town defender Lee Jeffries. Jethro was a rock at the back for City last season but was unable to commit himself for this campaign due to work and travel difficulties as he opted to move closer to home with the Lodge Road outfit. He should be joined by Hartpury College student Adam Howarth as City look to improve from a poor run of recent form.
City's opponents in the FA Cup will be Screwfix League side Street after they dumped local rivals Cinderford Town out of the competition after extra time last night. The game will take place in Somerset on Saturday September 18th. |

Jimmy Cox Individual goal |
City got their first point out of the last available fifteen tonight by holding on against a mediocre looking Bath City side. Jimmy Cox, once a Bath player put the Tigers in front midway through the first half as he was given an escort to goal by Mike Trought and easily beat Gloucester based goalkeeper Stuart Fraser. Referreeing controversy on the stroke of half time though gifted the home team a point when Neil Griffiths was ruled to have handled a cross that was blasted at him, John Williams scored from the spot. Kenny Stiles might've given City all three points when his header from Mustoe's corner hit the target but it smacked the post and went out.

Helen Wood Double blast |
The City Ladies Team burst to the top of the League with a superb 6-0 away win at last season's runners-up Buckfastleigh in Devon yesterday. A lethal fifteen minute spell saw the Tigresses three up through Tsileka Perry, Helen Wood & Jo Thompson. The home side improved but couldn't stop the ladies from doubling their lead with goals from Wood and Perry again plus a final effort from Lorraine Johnson. The side included four fourteen year old debutants. Well done girls!
The Tigers try to halt their unwanted four match losing run with a trip to Twerton Park tomorrow evening to take on the Romans of Bath City (k/o 7.45pm). Having failed to make the cut for the Conference South, the Somerset side find themselves competing against the likes of City, Chippenham Town and hated rivals Team Bath. City will be hoping to have Andy Hoskins available again and it would be nice to have a referee who doesn't give penalties against us for fun! |

Lee Smith Two goals |
Today City were unlucky as they sunk to their fourth successive defeat thanks to a late winner. The referee from Worcester played a major part giving two penalties to Hemel and denying one to Lee Smith who was brought down as he turned the defender in the box. It was Smith who got both of City's goals whilst Hemel captain Bryan Hammatt went one better with a hat trick.
Darran Greaves, a shaven headed thug like striker was sent off for the visitors and tried to live up to his image when he had to be held back from taking a swing at the referee after the final whistle.

Tom Webb Stunning strike |
For the second time in less than a week City let a two goal lead slip to lose to the odd goal in five to league leaders Chippenham Town. An early penalty from Jimmy Cox and a superb strike from an angle by Tom Webb put City well ahead of their Wiltshire opponents but a goal by Ellis Wilmot and a brace from Scott Walker gave all their points to the hosts. Predictably the final whistle was greeted by an over the top reaction from City reject Wayne Thorne.

The Tigers are now 16th whilst Chippenham remain top of the . |

Gary Thorne Chippenham Star |
If City are to put a stop to their two game losing run then they will have to do it the hard way as they pay a visit to league leaders Chippenham Town at Hardenhuish Park tomorrow (3pm k/o). An attack minded side struggled to show any sort of cohesion as City went down to Histon and Chris Burns will be looking for an improvement against Steve White's Wiltshire side. Two familiar faces who should feature for the Bluebirds will be ex-Tigers Gary and Wayne Thorne, both of whom were on the losing side in FA Cup matches against City last year!
For directions to Chippenham, . The quickest route is via the M4 & M5 but being a Bank Holiday the motorway will be clogged so TR suggests that fans travel via Cirencester and Malmesbury.

Dave Wilkinson Three goal top scorer |
It was more disappointment for City today as they went down by the odd goal in three to Histon in the first ever meeting between the two clubs. An early goal from Matthew Haniver was pegged back by a rocket from Dave Wilkinson minutes before half time, however an Ian Cambridge header netted all three points for the Stutes late in the second half.
Click for a few photos from the game and for the match report.
Today's defeat now leaves City twelfth in the as local rivals Cirencester continue their march to the summit behind Monday's opponents Chippenham Town. Our opening day hosts Bedford Town have finally scored their first goals of the season as they slaughtered Bath City 4-1 at Twerton Park. |

Dan Avery Back at the back |
The Tigers aim to bounce back from their midweek defeat at Chesham with a home game against Cambridgeshire side Histon (k.o 3pm) at Meadow Park. Led by Steve Fallon, the ex-Cambridge City boss they are reportedly a big, strong and direct team who can also play it around the deck when necessary. Chris Burns will have a selection problem up front with five strikers (Aubrey, Davis, Cox, Hoskins and Stiles) to choose from as well as Dan Avery to shore up the defence. Just wing backs Keith Knight and Adie Harris are injury doubts.
The Gloucestershire Senior Cup game against Cheltenham Town will take place on Tuesday September 21st with a 7.45pm kick off, although, if the FA Cup game from Saturday 18th needs a replay, the County Cup game will be postponed. |

County Cup Visitors from the Pits |
The draw has been made for this season's Gloucestershire Senior Cup and City have been pitted against the Wimbledon of the Golden Valley, Cheltenham Town FC. Although no date has yet been agreed for the game our prestigious neighbours are expected to send a reserve team featuring players not good enough for League Two to fulfil the fixture, so that could be any of them then! First aid will be on hand at Meadow Park for any spectators who suffer neck injuries whilst watching their punt and rush style of football.
Here is the full draw...- Forest Green Rovers v Cinderford Town
- Mangotsfield United or Bristol City v Yate Town
- Bristol Rovers v Cirencester Town
- Gloucester City v Cheltenham Town

Lee Davis First senior goal |
It was a night of disappointment and despair for City tonight following a 2-3 reverse at Chesham. Goals from Lee Davis, his first for the club and a deflected drive from Jimmy Cox gave City a two goal cushion. However, the homer ref had awarded the Buckinghamshire side a penalty within a minute and it was all downhill from there. An equaliser with ten minutes to go plus another penalty sealed our fate as we went home empty handed.
The most annoying thing is that we faced the worst goalkeeper that I've ever seen at this level and he ended up on the winning side. Read the report .
Thanks to everyone who supported the minibus, I hope you enjoyed my driving as much as Joe Green enjoyed going over the speed bumps! |

Andy Adebowale City legend |
City travel to Buckinghamshire tomorrow night for a top of the table clash with Chesham United (k/o 7.45pm). The Tigers will go clear at the top if they can beat a team featuring City legend Andy Adebowale and both Cirencester and Chippenham fail to net maximum points. Andy Hoskins is available following his suspension and should partner Lee Davis in attack as Jimmy Cox continues his journey back to full fitness.
The Supporters minibus to The Meadow is now fully booked, sorry we couldn't get enough support for a coach, but if you are making your own way to the game, you can find directions .
Reports in the Citizen have confirmed that Chris Burns have been given the funds to bring defender Adam Howarth back to Meadow Park. The young Hartpury College student who made a big impact towards the end of last season has spent the summer back at home on the Isle of Wight and has also been on trial with Coca Cola Championship side Watford, although he was unable to secure a permanent deal. Having him back can only be good as the Tigers look to make an impact at this level. |

Marvin Thompson Adam who? |
A below par performance from City was enough to clinch all three points against Dunstable Town at Meadow Park this afternoon. Dave Wilkinson, Tom Webb and Super Marvin Thompson all scored as the Tigers came from behind to beat the Bedfordshire side 3-1. Shandy Davenport will also be delighted having finally lifted the curse of his seven year long run of not seeing City win at home.
City go joint top and remain unbeaten. Click for the league table.

Due to lack of demand Tuesday's supporters coach to Chesham United has been downgraded to a 17 seater minibus. It will still leave Meadow Park at 4.30pm with reasonable pick up's en route. |

Shandy Davenport Unlucky charm |
Dunstable Town are the visitors to Meadow Park tomorrow (k/o 3pm) as City look to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Chris Burns has a selection headache up front with Matt Aubrey only 50/50 after he limped out of the Team Bath game with a twisted ankle, Jimmy Cox not 100% fit, Kenny Stiles still on holiday and Andy Hoskins serving the final game of his three match ban. The Bedfordshire team have lost both their opening games to date, losing 0-6 at home to Chippenham and 1-3 at Histon on Tuesday.
Online bookmakers Bet365 are offering ridiculously short odds on the Tigers and 5/1 on Dunstable to win, although what they don't know is that home match jinx Shandy Davenport (who hasn't seen a home win since 1997) will be in attendance. When he isn't writing spoof letters to newspapers, Shandy makes the trip from 'oop north to scupper the Tigers' chances of a home win. Expect anything but three points for City tomorrow. |

Keith Knight Penalty success |
For long periods tonight it looked as though City would have a fruitless excursion in front of goal as the students of Team Bath took about the task of restoring some pride following their 0-5 home hammering on Saturday against Kings Lynn. The University team had the Tigers under the cosh for long periods yet amazingly City ended the half with two quick goals for a scarcely deserved lead.
Keith Knight bagged the first from the penalty spot after Lee Smith was brought down in a way that has earned many penalties in the past and will net more in the future then a minute later Dave Wilkinson stooped to divert Knight's cross inside the far post. A goal three minutes into the second half from Tomas Jaukovic rocked City but the student's challenge fizzled out as Chris Burns' men held on for all three points.
There are no photos tonight, but for a match thesis. |

Matt Aubrey Cover for Hosky |
City travelled the short distance to Bedford today on a scorching hot day and did well to come away with a point following a goalless draw. Despite missing a free header at the far post the Eagles had at least three clear chances by lobbing over from a poor Griff back header, hitting the post through a Neil Mustoe backpass and striking the bar with the ball bouncing on the line the flying to safety. Lee Davis came closest for City with a header that bounced over the bar as both sides will be happy with the draw following a red card for Bedford's Derwayne Stupple.

Don't forget the Supporters Meeting at Meadow Park tomorrow to decide the future direction of the Supporters Club. Trust or no trust? |

Lee Davis Loan Striker |
The last six weeks of preparation are now complete and tomorrow see's the dawn of a new season as City embark on the step up to the reformed Southern League Premier Division. Bet365 have made us fifth favourites to claim the crown and those odds will surely be tested with an away opener at Bedford Town (k/o 3pm) who narrowly failed to make the cut into the Conference South in May.
Chris Burns looks to be able to name his strongest side except in attack where last year's deadly duo of Andy Hoskins (banned) and Jimmy Cox (injured) are both ruled out. Their places are taken by two loanee's, Matt Aubrey from FGR and Lee Davis from the dark side of the Golden Valley.
The supporters are taking a mini-coach as demand for a full one wasn't forthcoming but there are no places left so people are advised not to show up at 11am expecting to go as they will be disappointed. For fans travelling to the New Eyrie by car, you can find directions to the ground . |

Neil Griffiths Two at Garden Village |
City made what is now their annual 'team bonding' trip to South Wales yesterday to play against Swansea side Garden Village. Previous matches have seen us win 1-0 and 3-0 against our 'Motaquote Insurance' Welsh Football League Division Two hosts and yesterday was no different as the Tigers hit six goals without reply. Goalscorers for City were Captain Neil Griffiths and new signing Kenny Stiles, both with two plus further goals from Lee Smith and Tom Webb.
