FA Cup 3qr
Chippenham at home
City have been drawn at home to Chippenham Town in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, the game will be played on Saturday October the 11th, the same day as the Turkey v's England International. It will give the Tigers chance to cross swords with the Wiltshire side again having knocked them out of the same competition in October 2000, with a 5-3 victory at Hardenhuish Park.

Here is a link to the Chippenham Website and their Message Board.

As the mens team march on in the FA Cup, the ladies team have stumbled. Yesterday they were beaten 2-3 at Alphington in Devon, despite taking the lead through a Robert Carlos style free kick from Helen Wood.

Eddie Eldridge has added a page for the Gloucester Tigers to his informative Virtual Gloucester Website. I recommend that you check both pages out as the latter is an invaluable resource for our home City.

Lee Jeffries
two goals v's Merthyr
Lee Jeffries put in a solid display at the back and an awesome show up front as his two goals eased City through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup in a surprisingly simple win over Merthyr Tydfil. The Premier Division side looked a shadow of the team that confidently won the Western Division last year and they would've been disapointed with their showing at Meadow Park today.

Read the match report here and see the photos here.

Atherstone United were formally expelled from the DML on Thursday following their inability to provide some kind of buisness plan to help the club fulfill it's fixtures. This effectively means that the game on August 23rd didn't actually happen, that Neil Griffiths, Lee Jeffries and Adam Hemming didn't score. Sadly for Will Steadmean and Wilko, the bookings they picked up will still stand!

Monday 22nd September 2003
Jimmy Cox
Two goals in a minute
Two goals in a minute from Jimmy Cox midway through the second half settled tonights rescheduled FA Cup replay at Team Bath in City's favour. The home team had the better of the first half with the wind at their backs but City really made the pressure count in the second to earn a home tie against Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday. Click here for the match report

Mike Cook has been warned of about his future conduct after the incident at Bedworth on Saturday. A three man disciplinary panel (Colin Gardner, Daryl Cox and Don King) realised that he'd acted under extreme provocation and decided that the matter shouldn't be taken any further.

Yesterday saw the ladies team also grace the turf at the University of Bath in their SWWFL match and despite leading on three occasions could only manage a 4-4 draw. Striker Helen Wood scored a hat trick (before deputising for the injured Kat Blunt in goal) and Laura Akers got the other. In true City tradition there were bookings for Jo Thompson and Yvette Kemp.

Lee Jeffries
35 day ban on hold
Lee Jeffries has been handed a 35 day ban by the GFA for his alleged elbow during the pre-season friendly at Bishops Cleeve, although, as he is appealling against the decision he will be available to play in the meantime.

A few fixture changes. Wednesdays game at Taunton has been postponed due to the FA Cup replay at Bath and the away game at Stourport on October 11th will now be played at 7.30 on the Friday night due to the Turkey v's England game. Also the GFA Cup game at home to Mangotsfield will be played on Tuesday October 7th.

City assistant boss Mike Cook has been suspended in lieu of allegations of an assualt on a Bedworth fan in the clubhouse after the game yesterday. Cook had been subject to verbal abuse and had a plastic bottle thrown at his face when City went 2-1 up and was singled out by the drunken fan upon entering the bar. To prevent any repurcussions City chairman Colin Gardner ordered all City personnel back onto the team coach and back to Gloucester. Cook will face a disciplinary hearing before the FA Cup game at Team Bath.

Matt Bath
Early Bath!
City picked up a hard earned three points at Bedworth this afternoon with a 2-1 victory at the Miners Welfare Oval. City took the lead midway through the first half when Andy Hoskins scored with a back flicked header. It was his tenth goal in six games and has catapulted him to the top of the league goalscoring charts. The was rather niggly at times and the home team were lucky not to have a player sent off for throwing a punch. Wilko may have seen red too but it was a surprise to us all when the inevitable dismissal happened to Matt Bath. He looked like he'd brought the striker down as they both went for the long ball, but the Bed'uth player was well wide and looked as though he'd have a job to score, still the ref knows best! Wilko went in goal but couldn't stop the equaliser. Neil Griffiths seized on a weak save from a free kick to grab the winner.

Over 18's can read all about it and anyone can look at the photos here.

City have announced the signature of 18 year old former Newport County youth striker Craig Jones. It is hoped that the 6ft 4in student will put pressure on both Jimmy Cox and Andy Hoskins for a place in the City front line.

Monday 15th September 2003
Team Bath's
idea of floodlights
Tonight's FA Cup replay at Team Bath ended in farce when two of the floodlights covering the far side of the pitch were left disconnected after they'd been repositioned. Our sympathy goes out to all of the City fans who made the 100 mile round trip for nothing, the game will be re-replayed next monday at 7.30pm

The facilities at the University were something of a shock as well. For £5 you get access to a ground with no cover, just a temporary stand that seats around 200 people, a portakabin for changing rooms and no public address system. Considering the close scrutiny that has been applied to Meadow Park lately, how is it possible that this shambolic excuse for a club can be admitted into both the DML and also FA Competitions with what is essentially an athletics track for a ground. I take back all the bad things I ever said about Atherstone!

Sunday 14th September 2003
Helen Wood
bagged four goals
The City ladies team showed the men how to do it with a 6-0 win against the Swindon Spitfires on the opening day of their new adventure in the Southwest Womens Football League. Yvette Kemp opened the scoring after ten minutes before a goal from the club's record goalscorer Helen Wood gave the Tigeresses a 2-0 lead at the break. It wasn't all one way traffic though as Kat Blunt in the City goal had to perform heroics to protect the two goal lead. In the second half a further hat trick from Wood and another from Lorraine Johnson completed a memorable league debut for the ladies.

The ladies website will be upto date for the new season soon!

Saturday 13th September 2003
Tom Webb
close but no cigar
The FA Cup came to Meadow Park today with City and the students of Team Bath sharing the spoils in a dour 0-0 draw. Andy Hoskins and Tom Webb both had the best chances for the Tigers but it wasn't to be their day and the replay will take place on the campus at Bath on monday night.

You can read the match report and view the photos here.

The new reserve team got off to a winning start in the week with a 3-1 win away at Salisbury City. It gave Lyndon Tompkins a great chance for a full 90 minutes and also City ran the rule over a trialist striker from Cwmbran.

Saturday 6th September 2003
Andy Hoskins
no stopping him!
In a hell of a fight at Meadow Park this afternoon City twice came from behind against a very good Solihull Borough team to earn a 2-2 draw. Borough took the lead on sixteen minutes, a minute after my golden goal ticket (but a jackpot for Davenport!) Hosky got his first with a well place header, but the Brummies went back in front just before half time. It was left to Hosk to bag his ninth goal in six games from the penalty spot after Wilko was fouled. Not a great performance by the Tigers but we'll take a point!

The match report is here and the match action photos are here.

In other news, former FGR and Newport man Bradley Thomas has been released by the Tigers despite not making a first team appearance. In all honesty I don't think he was ever going to make the first XI and I'm not sorry to see him go.

The Atherstone saga appears to be dragging on. There are unconfirmed reports that the DML have given them until September 25th to find a rescue package, until then all of their games will be postponed.

Monday 1st September 2003
Atherstone United
gone bust
Atherstone United, long time league rivals for City have gone out of buisness and been removed from all FA Competitions and the DML. Tigers fans will remember that the Adders won promotion with us in 1988/89 and also joined us on the way back down when we were relegated in May of 2000. It's always a sad day for the supporters when a club is closed, hopefully something can be sorted out to replace the Sheepy Road outfit. Their demise will mean that our 4-1 win at Meadow Park last week effectively didn't happen as all records from this season will be removed.

For more information, see the Atherstone website.

Lee Smith
two goals on friday
The Tigers enjoyed their mini tour of South Wales with two 3-0 victories against Welsh League Division Two teams. On friday evening they beat Garden Village (match report here) and on saturday afternoon Caldicot Town were on the receiving end of the same scoreline. It was very much a team bonding excercise and all of the squad got a run out in both of the games. The goalscorers at Garden Village were Keith Knight and Lee Smith (2) and on saturday Jimmy Cox scored twice with Andy Hoskins getting the other from the spot after Adam Hemming was fouled.

Click here for the photos and here for the videos.

Andy Hoskins
scores against Bath
As a goodwill gesture after City Chairman Colin Gardner donated £3000 to their 'Save Bath City' appeal, the Romans agreed to come to Meadow Park to play a pre-season friendly. I'll bet they wish they hadn't now as they got soaked in the rain and humbled by the 3-1 scoreline. Andy Hoskins scored twice and Steve Jenkins scored with a thirty yard wonder strike into the top corner, Bath replied through ex-City hod carrier Paul Milsom.

It was a good day off the field too as star striker Jimmy Cox put his name to a two year contract for City. That ought to keep the wolves from our door, well, unless their minted wolves that is!

The rain ruined most of my pictures, but some can be found here

Tuesday 22nd July 2003
Will Steadman
scored at Ellwood
City were in action tonight at Ellwood with their third pre-season friendly game inside four days. With little more than a reserve team, the Tigers managed an easyish 4-0 win against the side from the deepest corner of the Forest of Dean. Two goals in either half settled the game as a contest, if there was one to be fought. Will Steadman and Kenny Howard got the first two, then Andy Hoskins (as sub) and Lee Burby netted after half time. It was a nice evening game in a picturesque setting and a good opportunity for the likes of Burby, Phil Dexter, Kenny Howard, Adam Stradling and Bradley Thomas to impress.

Here are a few pictures from the game.

Sunday 20th July 2003
Jimmy Cox
scorer against FGR
Several weird looking ugly people dressed as zebra's came to Meadow Park this afternoon as City took on FGR to compete for the title of supreme absolute total champions of non-league football in Gloucestershire. At the end of the day, the competition, with both teams and fans vying for blood had to settle for a draw. New boy Lee Jeffries gave City the lead with a rocket of a shot from a first half corner. Sadly for the Tigers, ex-Scummer Neil Grayson equalised when the ball hit him on the back of the head and went in. Adie Adams put the oddballs 2-1 midway through the second period when the ball richoted off both ass cheeks before falling over the line.

The headlines were saved for Jimmy Cox as he scored against the club that he rejected when he drew the keeper off his line and slotted the ball home to make it 2-2. Not a bad performance considering that both teams had played another game in the hot sun less than 23 hours earlier.

Saturday 19th July 2003
Danny Walder
Scored Twice
City completed a resounding 7-0 win at Brockworth this afternoon. It was the second season running that City have won at the Woodlands by a healthy margin. This time the goals came from an Andy Hoskins header, Lee Smith made it two with a shot from the edge of the box. Neil Griffiths scored with a diving header from and unmarked position in front of the goal, then Chris Burns rolled back the years with a wonderful long rasping shot from twenty five yards straight into the top left hand corner.

The team changed for the second half but the goals didn't stop coming. Adam Hemming got his first goal for City then ex-youth teamer Danny Walder bagged a brace. There was also a trialist from Hartpury College who not only looked like Shaun Rouse but performed the same role as him. An easy win but the game against FGR, Sunday 2pm, will be an altogether different prospect.

Pictures from Brockworth can be found here.

Jimmy Cox
Not going to FGR
Star striker Jimmy Cox has delighted City fans by rejecting a move to Forest Green Rovers. It was feared that he might be tempted to try the move up to the Conference, after all he proved that he could match, if not better the standard in the league with his perfomances against Woking and Southport in the Trophy last year. It helped that his father Daryl is on the board at City and also that Jimmy is a lifelong Tigers fan. He has also agreed a new two year contract with City that will keep him here or at least earn City a fee if he's attracted to the bright lights. Great news for City, though bad for FGR as they've also lost out on signing Woking's Warren Patmore.

Saturday 12th July 2003
Adam Hemming
new face
City began their pre-season campaign with a 3-1 victory in the sweltering sun at Hardwicke's Green Lane ground. First half goals from Neil Griffiths and Dave Wilkinson saw City take a 2-0 lead into the break, but the County League outfit pulled one back not long into the second half. Striker Andy Hoskins made the game safe with a run and shot from outside the area. The Tigers included a few new faces including Keith Knight, Lee Burby and ex-youth team player Adam Hemming who has been playing for Ellwood.

Pictures from the game can be found here.

Travel Club
Want to join?
I'm looking for opinions on whether to run coaches to away games next season. We have the fixture list now and I reckon if people wanted we could go to every game outside of Gloucestershire, Bristol, Swindon & Evesham. I'd suggest a £10 membership fee and then £5 per trip and that should cover costs for the season.

Sadly, as is the nature with internet discussion boards, I have found myself suffering false allegations from FGR fan Richard Grant that I 'hacked' their forum and caused it to be out of service for 24 hours. I'd like to point out that I had nothing to do with it, click here to read the original thread from the FGR Forum.

Gary Marshall
wannabe bear killer?
The fixture list for the 2003/04 season has been published today. City start their campaign away at Rugby United on Saturday August 16th in what is sure to be a very tough encounter. We have the Mango's (H) and bear killers away over Christmas and Easter sees us away at Swindon and home to the Cinders. One note of caution though is the final game against Ilkeston. Their fans went to Clevedon and smashed the place up on the final day a few years ago.

Ex-City midfielder Gary Marshall is training with Tommy Callinan's Cinderford Town. The fiery midfielder was reported to be going to Slimbridge for the new season so it comes as a shock that he will still be at this level. Maybe it's reading too much into things, but having lost both Marc Richards and Scott Griffin I fear that our bear killing neighbours might well struggle this year.

Tuesday 8th July 2003
Tom Webb
NO to Stafford
Teenage midfielder Tom Webb has spurned the opportunity to join up with DMP side Stafford Rangers and opted to stay at Meadow Park for the time being. Tom had also been offered the chance of three months full time training with Crewe Alexandra as well as a contract with the Marston Road side, but it appears that there was no confirmation from the Gresty Road team. Webby revealed that both Chris Burns and Mike Cook had played their part in persuading him to stay at City. I personally believe that Tom needs a full season playing in centre midfield at this level to guage how good he really is.

With it seeming that Jimmy Cox will be off to the Lawn for sure, at least this news gives us something to smile about!

Saturday 5th July 2003
Support's v's Ladies
postponed
The draws have been made for the early rounds of this seasons FA Cup & Trophy. In the Preliminary round of the FA Cup we are away at Bristol Manor Farm (30th August, 3pm). If we win we will face either Team Bath or Porthleven at Meadow Park on Saturday September 13th.

In the FA Trophy we face a tough clash with league rivals Evesham United at Meadow Park on Saturday October 4th. I must admit to be rather disappointed that our exploits last season didn't earn us any kind of exemption. If we beat the Robins then we will be away at the muddy, sloping pitch of Rothwell Town on Saturday November 1st. Take a packed lunch cos last time I went they didn't have a tea bar!!!

Both draws can be found in the entirity on the FA website.
The FA Cup is here and the Trophy is here.

Owing to the state of the pitch at Meadow Park, the planned match between the City Supporters and City Ladies has been postponed. A decision has been made to hold the game later in the season and not prior to the pre-season friendly against Bath because the goalmouths haven't responded too well to reseeding.

Also in the news, City striker Jimmy Cox has been linked with a move to Forest Green Rovers after he was invited to pre-season training by Colin Addison. Personally I think it'll be a travesty if Coxy leaves, especially if he goes to FGR, a club whose supporters have become as far up themselves as Cheltenham fans were in recent seasons.
