City Reserves 1-0 Worcester City Reserves - Rutter strike is decisive
Tom Rutter's stunning fifth-minute volley gave Gloucester City reserves victory at Meadow Park last night to keep them in third place in the Central Conference.

The win extended the Tigers' unbeaten run to five matches and was only Worcester's second defeat of the season.

City included first teamers Andy Tucker and Andy Kirkup in their line-up and gave a debut to Evesham United centre-half Richard Clark, a former Cheltenham Town player.

Rutter's goal came from the Tigers' first attack

Player-coach Don O'Riordan played a perfect through ball and the Shortwood striker first time volley from eighteen yards flashed in off the post. Steve Norris should've equalised in the 60th minute after an unintentional flick-on from Clark but Harvey Willetts parried his shot and Norris scuffed the rebound.

City Reserves 2-4 Hereford United Reserves - Reserves lose
Gavin Williams grabbed all four goals as Gloucester City reserves were beaten 2-4 by Hereford United at Meadow Park last night.

Williams put the visitors ahead in the 23rd minute but City equalised within two minutes through Tom Rutter.

In the 36th minute Hereford retook the lead when Williams curled a shot past Harvey Willetts, and he made it 1-3 midway through the second half.

Andy Tucker quickly reduced the deficit with a deft lob over Medford and Paul Milsom and Rutter both went close to equalising.

But Williams wrapped things up in the 86th minute when he rifled in his fourth.

No back door entry for City
Gloucester City's hopes of sneaking into the Vauxhall Conference through the back door have been thwarted after plans to regionalise the Football League Third Division were scrapped yesterday.

A report published on Tuesday, proposed inviting sixteen Vauxhall Conference clubs into the League to form seperate North and South sections of the division could've meant the Tigers being asked to fill one of the vacancies in the Conference.

But at a meeting the majority of the 72 Football League club Chairmen were against the idea.

October 6th 1997 - Boss keeps press-up promise
Gary Thorne had manager Leroy Rosenior on his hands and toes after scoring his first Gloucester City goal in the 3-0 win over Kings Lynn at Meadow Park. Rosenior had agreed to do twenty-five press ups outside the dugout if Thorne netted this season and he was true to his word after the defender hit the target in the sixty-seventh minute.

"As soon as I scored my main objective was to make sure he did them," said Thorne. "It was brilliant to finally get my first goal after having one taken away last season and great to do it in front of the home supporters."

Rovers snatch striker from City's grasp
Forest Green Rovers have dealt a blow to arch rivals Gloucester City by beating them to the signature of former Halesowen striker Evran Wright.

City manager Leroy Rosenior had been hoping to sort out a deal today to bring the 32 year old marksman to Meadow Park and sharpen the Tigers blunt attack. But Rovers' managing director Colin Peake raced up to Wright's home in Wolverhampton yesterday to snatch the player from under City's nose for an undisclosed fee.

"It is slightly disappointing because the player had given us his word that he would join us," said Rosenior. "But then Forest Green came in with an offer that we could not match."

"I am still looking for a striker and hope to get one on loan after Saturday's FA Cup tie."

Wright, who is currently a Telford United player, may not be able to make his Rovers debut tomorrow at Bromsgrove because he is halfway through a months loan spell with Dr Martens Midland Division side Bilston Town. Telford have applied to the Football Association to have him recalled so that he can officially be transferred to the Lawn.

Free cup trip coach offer to fans
Gloucester City fans are being offered the chance to travel to tomorrow night's FA Cup replay at Wisbech free of charge. Renault dealership Hartland - City's major sponsors and run by chairman Rob Thomas - are paying for two free fifty-three seater coaches to Cambridgeshire for the fourth qualifying round replay.

If the Tigers beat Wisbech they will face either Billericay or Camberley, who replay tonight, in the first round proper. The coaches are expected to leave Meadow Park at around 3.30pm tomorrow and anybody interested in taking up the offer should ring the club on Gloucester 311060.

Meanwhile, City manager Leroy Rosenior has snapped up former Bristol City defender Darren Hobbs and is also poised to take a striker on loan. Hobbs (19), who can also play in midfield, impressed the Tigers boss when he played for the reserves in their 1-0 Central Conference win over Cheltenham Town on October 1st.

"Darren can play centre-back, left-back or on the left side of midfield which gives us a lot of options," said Rosenior. "He will officially put pen to paper on Thursday."

Striker Smith signs for City
Gloucester City have signed former Bristol City trainee striker Dwayne Smith after his impressive performance in last nights 2-3 reserve team defeat by Hednesford Town at Meadow Park. Player-Manger Leroy Rosenior said : "He did really well, is quick and very young at 18 or 19."

"He scored and set up a goal, but most importantly showed a lot of pace, which is something we have been lacking recently."

"I have signed him, and he will be involved against Halesowen on Saturday."

Rosenior believes Smith is exactly the kind of player City need. "He showed enough last night for me to sign him, his attitude was good and he worked hard for ninety minutes."

"The main thing about him is that he has pace, and he is local, which is the way that we are going to go using local talent."

Fellow trialist Michael Vanes is to train with City, with Rosenior saying "He's not fit, as he hasn't played for a couple of months, but he will train with us to get fitter."

Smith's arrival will go some way to helping ease City's injury crisis, which will still deprive them of a few first choice players for the Halesowen clash. "The situation hasn't eased too much, but I don't want to harp on about the injuries," Rosenior said. "There's nothing we can do about it, and we just have to get on with it."

The most pressing problem is in goal, where Steve Mokler and David Coles are both injured, which led to seventeen year old youth team goalkeeper Ben Lambert playing in the 1-0 GFA Cup win over Cinderford on Tuesday. "He did really well and I would have no worries about putting him in if required," said Rosenior.

Johnson added to transfer list
Gloucester City defender David Johnson has been put on the transfer list. The 29-year old former Northampton Town and Rushden & Diamonds player has recently started a new job and now has further to travel to the club which is causing him problems. Already two clubs from his local area, who play at a standard a division below the Dr Martens Premier Division, have made enquiries about him.

City have had no enquiries yet for goalkeeper David Coles, who is now available on a free transfer.

Manager Leroy Rosenior is keeping on Merthyr Tydfil midfielder Mark Evans for a month to have a good look at him. Evans played a trial game for the Tigers against Cinderford in the Dr Martens Cup on Monday and showed enough to impress Rosenior. He will train with the first team squad tonight.
