City’s playoff aspirations took a severe blow at the Spencer Stadium as they dropped two points against Banbury and even though Bashley lost at Team Bath the New Forest club are three points ahead with two games in hand.
The Puritans enjoyed a strong opening in the driving rain and forced a succession of corners but it was City who almost took the lead when loan striker Marcus Palmer forced a good save from keeper Andy Wheeler after a counter attack.
However Banbury’s early pressure told on nineteen minutes when the Tigers backline failed to clear and a robust challenge against Marc Richards by Nicky Gordon was deemed legal by the referee for the striker to create enough space to force a great save from Kev Sawyer before lifting the rebound into the top corner.
The Tigers weren’t too disheartened by the goal and continued to pressure Wheeler who looked uncomfortable with aerial balls. He dropped one at the feet of Alex Sykes but was rescued by a defenders clearance off the line.
Sykes again came close when he headed Jack Pitcher’s hooked cross straight at the keeper’s midriff before goalscorer Gordon should’ve done better when his pace took him past Neil Mustoe but he rolled his shot wide of the far post.
City were again agonisingly close at the start of the second half when a volley from Sykes deflected off Palmer’s back and looped just onto the top of the net with the goalkeeper struggling to cover.
Nicky Gordon then twice wasted similar chances to what he’d had in the first half before Lee Smith was guilty of an easy miss after doing all the hard work by controlling Tom Webb’s diagonal cross but shooting high over the bar.
The deserved equaliser came with twenty minutes to go when a cross by Smith was first flicked on by Pitcher and then substitute Will Morford and fell nicely for Jamie Reid at the far post to place beyond the reach of Wheeler to get the City fans singing in the rain!
Pitcher himself was then presented with a superb through ball by Sykes and opted to lob the outrushing keeper only to see his effort angle narrowly wide of the far post.
Banbury substitute Andy Baird almost scored with his first touch when Gordon broke down the left wing before crossing tantalisingly in front of the striker but he could only prod it wide.
On reflection the draw was a fair result in what was an entertaining game played in appalling conditions. |
