Gloucester City’s time in the playoff zone lasted just three days thanks to these two points dropped at Yate while results elsewhere saw wins for Brackley and Bashley, dropping the Tigers into seventh place.
The former City players in the home team not only included Paul Chenoweth, Lee Jeffries and Matt Rawlins but they also sprang a surprise with the inclusion of popular striker Michael Whittington who’d left the Tigers to join Weston in December.
City had a great start when a Jack Pitcher controlled a knock down from Marc Richards and flicked it towards the goal only to see it striker Jeffries’ raised arm. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after appeals from all the players and fans behind Tony Court’s goal.
It was refreshing to see Alex Sykes make no mistake from the penalty spot for the second time in three days coming after City had missed four consecutive penalties in his absence in recent games.
The game took on a similar trait to the recent one at the New Lawn as the Tigers created numerous chances but were unable to turn them into goals.
Reid, Sykes, Bevan and Pitcher all had chances while the home side saw an effort by Paul Metheringham scooped off the line by Neil Mustoe and a powerful goalbound drive by Adam Sims cleared before half time.
In the second half Yate upped the pressure and came close when Ashley Thomas blocked Whittington’s shot at the far post.
Tim Harris’ men somehow managed to pick up five bookings (Lee Smith, Pitcher, Mustoe, Thomas and Matt Rose) from a referee who was lenient to the home players by indicating a foul there, there and there yet cautioned City players for their first offence.
But as City counter attacked from a corner Reid was left in a heap on the floor from a punch by substitute Darren Hawkins. The incident was missed by the ref who was following play but brought to his attention by a linesman who picked out the unfortunate Edd Vahid as the offender and the Yate defender was sent off!
Despite having ten men the Bluebells still pushed forward and got an equaliser when half time Smith and Mustoe left a near post corner from Sam O’Sullivan to each other and it crept inside Kev Sawyer’s near post.
Yate could’ve even won it when a long throw was flicked on towards the far post where industrious midfielder Rose was in the right place at the right time to block a volley from O’Sullivan. |
