Gloucester City continued their recent run of good form with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Cossham Street against Mangotsfield United in a game which they never looked like losing.
Tim Harris had a fully fit squad and was afforded the luxury of leaving England Futsal star Alex Sykes on the bench whilst in form Alex Allard retained his place at left back. Marc Richards had overcome a flu bug to play at centre back where he was immense against the Mangotsfield attack.
The playing surface at Cossham Street doesn’t really lend itself well to passing football and the first half wasn’t for the purists as the Tigers attacked into the strong winter sun.
Ashley Thomas headed narrowly wide from a free kick but the highlight was a tremendous run by captain Neil Mustoe as he swapped one-two’s with Will Morford and Jack Pitcher before setting up Tom Webb but the midfielder rushed his shot and it was gathered by Mango’s keeper Josh Clapham.
‘Field skipper Alex Ball was taken off after a clash of heads just as they enjoyed their best spell, although the only threat to City keeper Kev Sawyer was a left footed shot from the right side by Jake Reid, the Mangotsfield striker on loan from Chippenham Town.
However their best chance came on the stroke of half time after Jamie Reid had given away a foul. The quick free kick led to a cross that set up Alan Shearer lookalike Alan Griffin with a free header in front of goal where the number nine headed hopelessly over the crossbar.
The Tigers started the second half down the slope with purpose and Morford was inches wide when he volleyed a poorly cleared corner back towards the goal.
Then Tim Harris’ men were given a great chance to score when Lee Smith was the victim of a clumsy foul by Jack Allward in the area but the right winger was unable to repeat his spot kick success against Hitchin as he sidefooted the ball wide of the post.
It mattered little though as within five minutes Pitcher had found the net against his former club. Matt Rose headed a goal kick to Alex Allard and the left back scooped the ball between the last defender and goalkeeper for Pitcher who ran through and slammed a shot into the bottom left hand corner.
A tactical change for the home side was followed by an enforced one as earlier substitute Andy Criddle suffered suspected knee ligament damage and was stretchered off.
Pitcher should’ve grabbed his second when put in by Tom Webb after a break down the right by Lee Smith, however the City forward somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar from six yards.
The Tigers did get a second as the game headed to a delayed conclusion following Criddle’s injury. A corner was cleared as far as Lee Smith who took the time to control the ball before chipping a cross back into Jody Bevan who’d beaten offside to divert a header beyond Clapham’s reach.
Wednesday night sees the visit of Bedford Town to the New Lawn (k/o 7.45pm), a game which if City win will see them rise as high as fifth and into the final play off place. |
