City continued their impressive unbeaten run with this 3-1 victory away at St James Park against playoff hopefuls Brackley Town.
Since October 13th last year when the Tigers went down 0-2 at Bedford Tim Harris’ men have gone on an eleven match unbeaten run in the league which has seen them pick up 25 points from the last 33 available and change from strugglers to playoff wannabe’s themselves.
Harris suffered a blow before the game with the news that left back Matt Walsh had picked up an injury but Alex Allard came in off the bench and produced an assured display at both left back and in the centre of defence when Ashley Thomas went off with an injury.
Brackley started the game down the slope and looked strong with their team including experienced ex-Millwall midfielder Dave Savage, former Kidderminster striker Scott Rickards and striker Jerome Anderson on loan from Stevenage Borough.
The home side had one or two chances, with a shot from Tom Winters flying just wide before City took a 13th minute lead. Jack Pitcher was fouled wide on the left and Allard’s free kick was headed on by Marc Richards for Jamie Reid at the far post who volleyed home past Richard Knight.
It could’ve been two a minute later when Reid rolled a ball into Will Morford but Knight did remarkably well to block the strikers powerful shot from twelve yards.
Another free kick into the Brackley penalty area was missed by everyone and it fell nicely for Allard but only the youngster will know how he failed to connect to give the Tigers a two goal lead going into the break.
There was a panicky start to the second half when a ball from right to left across the goal fell nicely for Anderson but his weak shot was stabbed off the line by the impressive Reid. Then the young midfielder got another chance at the other end when Alex Sykes rolled a free kick to him to shoot from 25 yards but the keeper was equal to it.
Lee Smith wasted a great chance to double the lead when put through by Pitcher as he rolled a shot narrowly wide of the far post when a return ball to the striker was the better option.
It seemed as though it mattered when Brackley equalised.
A free kick to the first post was fired into the area and Kev Sawyer did well to parry but Anderson got to the ball before the City keeper was able to recover and shot into the roof of the net.
However, this is a Gloucester City side who don’t know when they’re beaten and when Reid was fouled in the centre circle he grabbed the ball and played in quick to Sykes who controlled the ball, steadied himself and fired an unstoppable left footed shoot into the top corner from 25 yards.
It was a great way for Sykes to sign off before heading to Malaysia to captain the England Futsal team this week.
Concerns were raised when centre-half Ashley Thomas limped off injury to be replaced by Shortwood player John Cant but City continued to attack and were denied a certain penalty when Lee Smith was tripped by Michael Love in the area only for the referee to say it was outside!
Sykes fired the free kick over but it mattered little as on the next attack Cant ran thirty yards before playing in Morford who beat the keeper and laid the ball back to Smith whose shot was deflected in off of a defenders arm.
The win moves City into the top half of the table to set up a promising second half of the season. They are next in action on Tuesday at the New Lawn against Yate Kick, kick off 7.45pm. |
