Match Report : Corby Town v's City - January 12th 2008

Gloucester City extended their unbeaten run in the British Gas Business League to ten games with this remarkable 5-2 victory at the Rockingham Triangle against Corby Town.

Manager Tim Harris was forced to reshuffle his pack due to the suspension of Marc Richards yet he was happy to be able to select Neil Mustoe thanks to his knee injury not being as bad as originally feared.

The Steelmen started well on the wide open pitch and but for a firmer connection when put through top scorer Steve Diggin would’ve put the home team ahead. They came closer moments later when Robbie Maddox eyed Kev Sawyer off his line and went for a lob from distance although the City keeper recovered well to save.

Both teams looked to create chances and while the build up play was good the final ball wasn’t so. City’s best opportunity fell to Jamie Reid who forced a good diving save from Corby’s debutant keeper Martin Davies when he volleyed through a crowd of players.

Although City were looking sharper as the game moved towards the break and Corby were let off when Ashley Thomas had an air shot at Jack Pitchers flick on. The home team weren’t let off though as on the stroke of half time Will Morford forced his way past a hesitant defender to shoot low inside Davies’ post for City’s first goal.

Any team talk that Corby manager Kevin Wilson gave had an immediate impact as they equalised after just five minutes of the second half. A looping cross from the right was met by a header from striker Darren Lynch and the ball ricocheted into the net off of Matt Rose’ foot.

The home side were in the ascendency now and looked more likely to score. Diggin should’ve done better when Sawyer parried the ball to him but missed from twelve yards but on the rare opportunities that City were creating Corby showed that they would stop the Tigers by fair means or foul. More often than not it was the latter.

The Steelmen got their noses in front when a measured ball forward tempted Sawyer off his line but Diggin’s pace saw him there first to lift a well placed shot from twenty yards towards the City goal where it was agonisingly too far out of Neil Mustoe’s reach.

It felt like a real hammer blow and one that the Tigers might not recover from as when they did get near to their opponents penalty area they were invariably cut down with little protection from the referee.

However, out of the blue City grabbed and equaliser when Lee Smith found room on the right wing to thread a low pass to Morford who turned and shot in an instant to score underneath the diving Davies.

It got better. Straight from the restart City tore into the dejected Steelmen and again Smith was instrumental as he strode through a non-existent defence and found the run of left back Matt Walsh who rifled an unstoppable shot beyond the advancing goalkeeper.

This looked as though it would be a great victory if the Tigers could hold on but with two minutes left for play holding on wasn’t in the mind of Jack Pitcher as he timed his run to get onto another fine through ball and bore down on goal where he looked up and fed the unmarked substitute Jody Bevan to tap home City’s fifth.

Amazingly the scoring wasn’t finished as Pitcher once more used his pace to beat the linesman’s flag and this time coolly slotted the ball to the keepers left before embarking on an audacious goal celebration by taking advantage of the athletic facilities and performing a spectacular long jump into the sand!

The victory moves City into thirteenth place with several games in hand on the teams above them. A win at Halesowen on Tuesday will really makes the rest of the league sit up and take notice.
