Gloucester City extended their impressive unbeaten run to nine matches at Ladysmead against Tiverton Town in an evenly contested fixture that could’ve gone either way on chances, although City Manager Tim Harris was relieved to see Tivvy’s Matty Bye miss a golden opportunity from twelve yards with seconds of injury time remaining.
Harris had been dealt a blow before the game when skipper Neil Mustoe, the lynchpin that at the heart of defence that has been instrumental to the teams recent run of form was ruled out with a lateral knee ligament injury. Matt Rose took his place and also the Captain’s armband.
It didn’t break the rhythm of the Tigers attacking style though as they dominated the opening throes of the game on a heavy pitch that had been passed fit in the morning despite heavy downpours overnight.
There was cause for concern as early as the second minute when Lee Smith, City’s Dangerman on the right wing went down and stayed down holding his boot and suggesting that he’d broken his toe. He was patched up by City physio Ade Tandy and continued to cause problems for Tiverton’s ex-Rangers defender Chris Vinnicombe.
However City failed to turn their dominance into chances as the home team packed the penalty area with bodies and Ray Johnston, who played in goal for the Tigers last season was rarely tested. Alex Sykes tried a cheeky drive from thirty yards but Razor got behind it to keep it out.
Tiverton posed no real threat going forward but caught City out minutes before the break when the linesman failed to flag a player offside and Chris Young broke through but dragged his shot wide of Kev Sawyer’s post when he should’ve hit the target.
Jack Pitcher was looking out of sorts on the heavy pitch and missed a great chance at the start of the second half when strike partner Will Morford sent in a low cross into the six yard box only for Jack to completely miss the ball with only Johnston to beat.
Tiverton stepped up a gear and started to look like a side that had won three of their last four games and might’ve done better when sixteen year old left winger Glen Gould angled a shot narrowly wide of the post when a ball was played back to him.
The home side came even closer when one of Johnston’s might goal kicks was returned to James Fraser who beat offside and was unlucky to see his attempted lob pushed over the bar by the superb Sawyer.
Both team made changes, with Tiverton’s Tom Knighton replacing Young and Darius Morgan for Pitcher. But it was the other City striker Morford who had a great chance to score when his pace took him past the last defender but he delayed his shot long enough for Johnston to rush off his line and block.
With the quality of the game deteriorating as badly as the pitch both sides made two more changes each but other than a drive into the side netting from Matt Walsh and Bye’s glaring miss deep into injury time neither team could break the deadlock. |
