Match Report : Hitchin Town v's City - November 17th 2007

Gloucester City won their first BGBL Premier Division match for more than two months with a 2-1 victory at Top Field against Hitchin Town.

It came as a massive relief to City boss Tim Harris who this week had seen the clubs hopes of a move to Waterwells Park rejected and also the loss of young midfielder Sam Ellis with a dreadful leg injury.

The home side started well and could’ve scored twice in the opening minutes had it not been for the agility of goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer and the poor finishing from Richard Pringle.

The game was won in a three minute spell midway through the first half when Lee Smith made a goal for either of the City strikers with accurate crosses from the right wing.

The first was a hanging cross to the far post where Will Morford got behind his marker and looped a header high over the stranded Ricky Perks into the far corner and a minute or so later Smith whipped a low ball into the corridor of uncertainty where Michael Whittington bravely dived to head inside the near post.

Sawyer was called on again to turn a placed shot from Shane Hill over the bar whilst Alex Sykes had a great chance to kill the game off when he volleyed Matt Rose’s cross goalwards only to see Perks touch the ball over at full stretch.

It took just twenty-one seconds of the second half to virtually undo all the good work that had gone before when the home team attacked from the kick off and threaded the ball to the far post where left winger Moses Olaleye swept the ball home. Not one City player had touched the ball.

Hitchin seemed to be lacking quality in the final third and were unable to trouble City further, who in turn came closest to scoring when Ashley Thomas’s header was cleared off the line at a corner and Sykes again came close with a fizzing low drive from twenty-five yards after Morford’s knock down.

With the late autumn evening beginning to bite the referee managed to find five minutes of added time for the Tigers to hold out and it almost ended in frustration as substitute Ricky Miller ran into the penalty area and under no real pressure from Michael Noakes and hit the deck in search of a penalty.

He couldn’t pull the wool over the Officials eyes and was booked for diving. To make matters worse before the game had restarted he directed a volley of abuse at Jamie Reid within earshot of the referee and was given a straight red card for foul and abusive language.

After the final whistle manager Tim Harris dedicated the victory to young midfielder Sammy Ellis.
