Gloucester City extended their unbeaten run with a point at the Hand Stadium against Clevedon Town but it wasn’t enough to move the Tigers out of the bottom four of the British Gas Business League Premier Division.
Tim Harris fielded a young side with debuts for teenagers Elliot Seddon in goal and former Crewe Alexandra trainee Russell Courtney alongside Neil Mustoe and Ashley Thomas in defence.
Backed by a healthy travelling contingent City looked to unsettle their hosts from the off but were held at bay by a stern Seasiders defence. Geraint Bater, son of Clevedon manager Phil was cautioned early doors when he tripped Tom Webb as he was running the ball out of defence.
It was to be Webb’s last action though as he was involved in a nasty clash of heads between himself, a Clevedon player and Michael Noakes. Webb came off the worst with a massive cut to the eye which opened up to the bone and needed eighteen stitches whilst for the second week running Noakes spent the Saturday evening in A&E.
Both were replaced, also by youngsters. Webb made way for Sam Ellis and Alex Allard took over from Noakes.
It unsettled the Tigers to the point that Clevedon took the lead through Gloucester based midfielder Mike Green. The ex-Forest Green player was left unmarked from a throw and beat Seddon with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area.
It could’ve been two moments later when a free kick just evaded the unmarked Steve Cook at the far post. A similar attack happened for City too when a cross shot from Lee Smith passed through a sea of legs and edged past the upright.
Clevedon were reduced to ten men when Bater recklessly lunged in on Will Morford wide on the right wing and could’ve had another sent off minutes later when Mike Trought flew in two footed on Alex Sykes but was only cautioned by the referee.
At the start of the second half both keepers were tested, first Danny Greaves in the Clevedon goal had to react quickly to touch Sykes’ snapshot over the bar and then Seddon got down well to deny Kyle Bassett.
The Tigers drew level on sixty-four minutes when Smith cleverly nodded a deep Allard corner back into the mixer for Ashley Thomas to sidefoot home from close range.
City were on top and were the only team that looked like scoring and should’ve when Thomas beat Greaves to flick on a long throw but the ball fell behind Morford who couldn’t connect with the open goal in front of him. |
