“The important thing is that we’re in the hat” was Gloucester City manager Tim Harris’ first thoughts after seeing his team scrape to a draw away at Stourbridge in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy.
Harris had bemoaned his team’s inability to put away their chances the previous week at Bedford so today switched to a 3-5-2 formation and gave striker Michael Whittington his first start for almost two months alongside new boy Will Morford.
The home team attacked downhill at the three sided Amblecote stadium (and cricket pitch during the summer) and despite forcing a succession of corners were unable to trouble Kevin Sawyer in the City goal.
At the other end Whittington featured prominently, first being denied a penalty when he was bundled over on the turn and then somehow failing to hit the target with a far post header from Lee Smith’s deep cross.
He didn’t get a chance to improve in the second half as he was replaced during the interval by Jack Pitcher.
The home side stepped up a gear and Jamie Rogers was unlucky when his goalbound shot was charged down by Neil Mustoe, then Jamie Reid was unlucky when he tried his lucky from thirty yards only to see his powerful drive cradled by Lewis Solly in the Stourbridge goal.
With fifteen minutes to go the Glassboys went in front, somewhat undeservedly but something that has been the story of City’s season so far. Mark Bellingham was in the right place at the right time to tap home after Sam Rock’s shot was blocked by Sawyer.
And when it looked as though the Tigers were about to be giant killed again they got lucky when Marc Richards’ close range pile driver was handled by defender Ross Collins and the referee awarded a penalty and sent off the offender. Substitute Alex Sykes sent the keeper the wrong way for his sixth goal of the season.
The replay is at the New Lawn on Wednesday, kick off 7.45pm. |
