Gloucester City striker Jack Pitcher was the five star hero for the Tigers as his five goal haul systematically tore Yate Town to shreds in this FA Cup first qualifying round tie at Lodge Road.
Tim Harris had left his summer signing out against Brackley a week earlier to give him time to recover from his thigh strain and the extra few days rest seemed to benefit him as he was a constant threat all afternoon.
It wasn’t all about the goalscoring prowess of Pitcher though; Lee Smith was having a field day down the right wing causing ex-Tiger and pantomime villain Dave Elsey a torrid time whilst once again on the left Jamie Price showed that he is a class above most others at this level.
After both Tony Court and Kevin Sawyer had had their hands warmed by efforts at either end Pitcher opened the scoring when Jason Welsh set him up under pressure from Scott Brice and place a shot inside the far post from just outside the area.
Yate responded well and Jamie Reid was lucky to only receive a yellow card for a foul on Dave Anyinsah after he was beaten all ends up. The ensuing free kick smacked against the post and away to safety.
But Yate had no answer for Pitcher and the striker found room on the right wing, cut in and curled a shot around ex-City defender Lee Jeffries again into Court’s far post for his second.
On the stroke of half time it should’ve been three when Price’s free kick curled beautifully over the wall only to his the post with Tony Court stood watching.
At the start of the second half Tom Webb was cautioned for failing to retreat from a free kick as Yate stepped up a gear. A long goal kick saw an easy opening when Anyinsah flicked on for Aaron Blakeman who blazed over the bar with just Sawyer to beat.
A change for City saw Jason Welsh replaced by Scott Griffin. Welsh had suffered a Groin strain on the ground where he suffered a serious injury last year that saw him miss most of the early part of the season.
Sawyer was tested again as the home team pressed and a flurry of changes saw them on top for a period. This was accentuated when a short corner was crossed to Jeffries at the far post and his header back into the mix was looped home by Ed Vahid.
With a danger that Yate may get back into the game Harris brought on Lyndon Tompkins for Alex Sykes to tighten things up at the back but attack proved to be the best form of defence as Pitcher got City’s third when he got his head to Jamie Price’s free kick five minutes later.
Blakemore tried his luck with a half volley on the turn but was matched by big Kev in the City goal as City showed that they could soak up pressure and score on the break when Lee Smith held the ball up before playing in Pitcher to run unaccompanied for thirty yards and score inside Court’s near post.
As the Tigers celebrated Yate’s Ashley Williams cut a lonely figure as he was sent from the field for directly a volley of foul and abusive language at the referee.
With the game in its final throes the tannoy sounded to name Jack Pitcher as man of the match, a very rare feat indeed as they are almost always exclusively named from the home team. No sooner had the announcement been made that again the City striker was set up by Smith to again find the back of Tony Court’s net.
The Tigers finished the game with ten men when the impressive Smith was withdrawn from the action due to suffering from cramp.
Could this be the year that Gloucester City reignites their love affair with the FA Cup? Jack Pitcher certainly hopes so! |
