Charlie Griffin FA Cup saviour
|
Tim Harris revealed after this game that every time he has gone on a good cup run with any club he'd been involved with the first game always went to a replay after a less than satisfactory performance.
The phrase "Got out of Jail" was heard after the final whistle, someone even used the word "Gaol" on the COF but I don't think it was all that bad, it was just frustrating because we were behind for so long.
Typically Paulton scored after City had dominated for almost twenty minutes. The home side were awarded a free kick after right back Ollie Knowles had cheated the referee by feigning injury after Lewis Hogg had pulled out of a challenge at the last minute. From the ensuing free kick goalkeeper Paul White pushed a low shot into the path of Mike Bryant who would've done well to miss.
After that Matt Williams had a header cleared off of the line whilst Chris Jones also hit the post and then at the other end White did superbly well to push Brandon Barnes onto the crossbar.
City should've had a penalty in the second half when Hogg was tripped making a run into the area off the ball but the linesman on that side failed to make any meaningful contribution to the game along with a referee who probably didn't even know what day of the week it was.
The clock was ticking down and City finally got their breakthrough with five minutes left to play when what must've been City's twentieth set piece was headed home by Charlie Griffin. Adam Mann even had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside and City live to fight another day in the FA Cup.

Nat Jarvis City's best chance
|
Another disappointing result which has sent a number of City fans spinning into the realisation that we may be in for a long, hard season.
What makes it even more galling is that this 0-2 reverse was against a team that came from somewhere that no-one had even heard of. Fylde. No? Kirkham. No? Wesham. No? You get to their ground via a pub car park for goodness sake!
They're another of these bankrolled village teams crossing swords with the Tigers, who represent a City with a population of 135,000. It even has 2022 on their shirt sleeves showing the year by which they want to be competing in the Football League. After this win they went top so might have a chance of getting there sooner then they hope for.
After the disappointment of Leamington there were changes, most notably with Spencer Hamilton replacing Mark Preece at the back however Tom Webb had an injury and Marc Richards came back into the heart of midfield.
It was a game of few chances with the front two suffering from a lack of supply and it was Matt Groves who had City's only shot on target. Fylde went one better as Tom Hannigan tapped in from a second phase corner in first half injury time. The same player headed home minutes after the break too.
City made a few changes including the return of Nat Jarvis from International duty and he might've scored with one of three decent chances but it wasn't to be.

Scott Wilson Handball? So what!
Charlie Griffin top scorer
Chris Jones worldie
|
That's two successive away games at tough opponents that I've gone to without that sense of impending doom, and I was right after being let down by the lino at Ferriby and now with this fantastic 4-1 win at Guiseley which didn't flatter us at all.
Changes were made to the starting eleven with Scott Wilson and Tom Webb replacing Chris Jones and Marc Richards. Jones would come off the bench and put the icing on the cake with a stunning strike while Webby was an improvement on Ricco going forward on what was his 500th start for City.
It's not all about the money even if it might seem so sometimes when teams field a £900 p/w striker and the likes of Oli Johnson and Ben Parker who have Premiership experience with Norwich and Leeds whilst ours come from Shortwood and Bishops Cleeve!
As we've done on two previous occasions at Nethermoor, we took the lead. Wilson controlled the ball with his hand in front of the home dugout but out of the line of sight of the referee and strode forward to beat goalkeeper Steve Dickinson with a deflected shot. Scott will have been pleased having already had a goal ruled out for offside.
City fans with a long memory will remember Dickinson as Southport's keeper when we beat them 3-1 at Haig Avenue in the FA Trophy in 2003.
We couldn't have had a worse start to the second half; number two (eleven today) Mike Green being penalised for a foul on Johnson even though he got the ball. Number One Mike Green got a hand to Danny Boshell's spot kick but couldn't keep it out. Green (the outfield player) was booked too for pointing at the TV gantry and telling the ref that the game was being filmed and he'd be embarrassed at his decision when he rewatched it.
This could've been the turning point but City grew and went back in front within two minutes with a Charlie Griffin header from a Billy Jones set piece, absolute quality from the pair of them.
That's his fifth goal of the season and he's now the league joint top scorer. He'd be out on his own too if his audacious turn, chest and dipping volley had crept into the top corner but Dickinson did well to push it away.
It was too early to look at watches so it helped when young defender Matt Williams scored again from an identical position again from Jones' wand of a left foot. The look of absolute delight among his teammates showed what a special moment this was for a player who has been a real find.
But whilst Billy had done his bit, it was his namesake Chris who finally showed what he had testing the keeper with two decent shots before firing into the top corner from twenty-five yards to put the result beyond any doubt. Those three shots showcased just what Jones has that your average non-league footballer doesn't. Give him the ball and let him shoot.

Charlie Griffin bang on form!
|
Played five, drawn four and we probably should've got a point in the one that we lost at Tamworth too. We are a bookies nightmare!
Oxford might argue that they should've won with the Tigers equalising and the game being restarted only for the full time whistle to be blown but it was the least that City deserved having had the lions share of possession through the game.
A decent referee would've awarded a penalty when Adam Mann was taken out after he'd crossed the ball but it wasn't to be and the officials showed their ineptitude when Chris Jones was simply pushed off the ball by Paul Stonehouse like a hand off in rugby in front of the linesman, no foul was given. That said City benefitted when Oxford captain Liam Malone was fouled by Adam Connolly, how he wasn't booked I'll never know.
Oxford took the lead with their second shot, their first saw a Stonehouse shot hit the angle of post and crossbar and the loose ball was rifled home by Tom Winters. Winters always scores against us.
They were ahead for a long time and when substitute Charlie Griffin bundled home Scott Wilson's cross it looked like we'd go on to win but an Oxford substitute with a name sounding like the noise when you clear your throat was played onside by Sam Avery and stepped around Mike Green to score.
But supersub Griffin earned a point when Billy Jones bananaed in a cross to the far post where the veteran striker stooped to head home a carbon copy goal like the one that Mark Preece scored at Ferriby.
We look forward to the retun match where we might actually beat them for the first time. Hopefully they'll bring more than a dozen fans to that fixture.

Adam Mann forced save
Charlie Griffin off form
|
I work every other Saturday morning and with lots of rushing around can usually get done, home and hosed and over to Whaddon in time for football. Sadly though, as often is the case the fare on offer always seems to be below par. Today's game was a perfect example.
Lots of huffing and puffing but not real end product. We don't do match stats but if we did you'd find that there were hardly any shots on goal as Tim Harris' men struggled to find their way past the two rocks at the heart of the Hednesford defence.
The Birmingham team did have the ball in the net but that was chalked off by a linesman's flag, but after last week's debacle at North Ferriby I wonder if the management team are being brave relying on officials no matter how well drilled set piece defending might be?
Adam Mann was voted man of the match, maybe for the effort he put in or maybe because he was the only played to test Pitmen keeper Dan Crane. Both Charlie Griffin and Matt Groves fired high, wide and handsome while Chris Jones seems to be struggling to find his best form and was substituted for the third time in four games.
Goalkeeper Mike Green, who should make his 150th appearance for the club at Oxford on Monday was excellent and deserved his first clean sheet of the season.

Mark Preece header
Adam Mann two bites
|
With just two points from the first nine available it probably won't matter to some City fans how well their team has played. At the end of the day it's all about points on the board.
You might get sick of hearing it but City were excellent today. They turned an early setback on it's head first with an instant reply then by taking the lead but Lady Luck never seems to shine on our club and a dreadful call from a linesman handed North Ferriby an equaliser.
The Tigers were on the attack in the first minute with a header turned over the bar and they more than matched their moneyed opponents so it was a sickener to go behind when Nathan Jarman's shot first took a deflection and then was flicked in by Matt Williams, despite Mike Green's best efforts to keep it out.
Defender Mark Preece had an instant reply when he got in behind the defence to power home a curling Billy Jones free kick with a stooping header before Adam Mann gave us the lead burying the ball after goalkeeper Adam Nicklin had saved his intital shot as he ran through onto Marc Richards' perfect through ball.
City looked comfortable into the second half but were stunned when Jarman crossed the ball from a foot behind the line, everyone stopped and lanky ex-scuzzer Tom Denton tapped the ball in. Greener looked at the linesman who was unmoved and the goal was given. No-one could quite believe it, yet they lapped it up. The official will have been paid for his part too, while it cost me £50 to go to the game and that wanker spoiled it.
Preece left the field for what seemed like an age to get treatment for a cut on his head and returned with a big black bandage but was almost sent straight off for a lunge on ex-Derby County star Adam Bolder. He was booked. So was Ferriby sub Russell Fry after a nasty looking leg breaker on Sam Avery.
But it was Bolder who saw a straight red after he went in studs high on Adam Connolly.

Matt Groves equalised
|
There can be no worse way to lose a football match than with a goal three minutes into injury time, especially when the team that wins it has hardly desrved it.
Having been relegated last year Tamworth seem to have been installed as one of the favourites to go back up but unless they are going to play badly and win every week they'll have to do a lot better than they did tonight. They had about as much spark as their floodlights which failed at half time!
Tim Harris sprung a surprise by leaving Saturday's two-goal hero Charlie Griffin on the bench and strikers Adam Mann and Scott Wilson failed really to make too much of an impact. It wasn't until Griffin and winger Matt Groves were introduced in the second half that we looked more of a threat.
By then Tamworth were ahead with a cross which deceived Mike Green, it was one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't efforts which arrowed into the top corner with one bounce. They hit the post too, other than that they were poo.
Groves levelled with a lovely turn and shot and the City following almost took the roof off of the tinpot stand with their celebratory roar, but it was left to the home side to break City's hearts with a free kick deep into injury time which ruined the journey home.

Charlie Griffin brace
Billy Jones free kick ace
Matt Williams gave away pen
|
So the new season is upon us and in front of the best opening day crowd for fifteen years both City and Bradford Park Avenue shared a six goal thriller on a sunny afternoon at Whaddon Road.
Tim Harris' team selection might've surprised one or two with the inexperienced pairing of Spencer Hamilton and Matt Williams at the back with Mark Preece left on the bench and given the fact that we lost a lead three times it may have been too much too soon for the youngsters.
Marc Richards rolled back the years to play in the heart of midfield and did well in a defensive capacity while winger Chris Jones struggled to find his feet and when he became more of a threat at the start of the second half he was taken off!
Up front Charlie Griffin could've had a hat-trick before he finally scored and that was from a blind backpass from Bradford's Ryan Qualter. Griffin made no mistake, and as the Bristol Rovers fan exclaimed the other week, "An old man has scored", that old man will score a lot of goals this season.
The scores were even at the break when Matty James scored with a free header. With games now being videoed for tactical purposes there will be plenty for Matt Rose to pour over. One might argue that the goal shouldn't have stood owing to a handball by Chib Chilaka in the build up too.
The second half started well. City had two good openings, then Bradford had two more, followed by another with Chilaka bringing a great save out of Mike Green in the City goal. It was a sign of how the game would progress with the Yorkshire team getting stronger as the game wore on.
City's second came from a Griffin penalty after Welshman Jones had been bundled off the ball and then referee Amy Fearn gave them a spot kick after Matt Williams had tripped an opponent. Richard Marshall finished with aplomb.
The pendulum swung again with a free kick for City after Adam Connolly had been fouled. Griffin had already spurned a set piece trying to get his third goal so it was great to see Billy Jones send in a banana shot which portly Bradford keeper John Lamb just couldn't get down to quickly enough.
An opening day win was too much to hope for though as a simply long ball was lifted into the net by Paul Walker and with Hamilton lame and playing up front after Harris had made three subs I think we were glad to hear the final whistle.
City : Mike Green, Avery, B.Jones, Hamilton, Williams, Connolly, Richards, C.Jones (Chamberlain 70), Griffin, Mann (Wilson 77), Groves (Webb 81). Subs n/u : Michael Green, Preece
