Mike Green wonder save
|
Another disappointing league outing for the Tigers with a 0-2 reverse away at Moss Lane against Altrincham.
A tap-in from Simon Richman, after an outstanding save from Mike Green, followed by a wonder strike from Brian Smikle condemned City to a sixth consecutive winless game.

Tyler Weir scored penalty
|
Following an excellent game against Brackley in the week this encounter seemed just like the polar opposite as City surrendered and early lead before looking as though they'd run out of ideas as Boston strolled to an easy win.
Tom Webb won an early penalty and with Darren Edwards on the bench Tyler Weir stepped up to squeeze his spot kick just inside the post but that seemed to be City's only chance are despite controlling the game were hit by a stunning twenty-yard shot by Boston mercenary Ian Ross which smacked in off of Mike Green's far post before nestling in the opposite corner.
Both sides brought on another striker for the second half, Edwards for us, Spencer Weir-Daley for them but it was the Lincolnshire team who reaped the rewards with two near identical headers from Ross corners within ten minutes of the restart.
Carl Piergianni, the one with the 80's hair who won at Whaddon with Corby at the tail end of last season powered looped one in first before Scott Garner powered home from a similar position to win the game. City had no answer and despite alot of huffing and puffing barely troubled the Boston goakeeper.
To make matters worse substitute Edwards limped off with five minutes remaining and having used all three subs City were left to play out the game with ten men.
City : Mike Green, Michael Green, Weir, Coupe, Harris, Webb, Hogg. Mullings, Morford (Edge 60), Wilson (Turl 75), Groves (Edwards 46, withdrawn 82). Subs n/u : Mustoe, Rawlings.

Tom Hamblin last game
|
City showed a great deal of bouncebackability by overturning a one goal defecit to lead against big spending Brackley Town tonight.
A brave but determined far post header by Darren Edwards and Scott Wilson taking advantage of a lucky bounce put the Tigers ahead after Steve Diggin had brilliantly turned Jack Harris to fire an unstoppable shot beyond Mike Green. But money talks and Brackley's substitutes bench full of experienced players gave them the option of bringing on veteran striker Charlie Griffin who smashed home the equaliser.
The game was the last for defender Tom Hamblin who is heading off to London and will join Wealdstone FC.
City : Mike Green, Michael Green (Rawlings 70), Weir, Hamblin, Harris, Webb, Hogg. Mullings, Morford (Edge 75), Wilson, Groves (Edwards 66). Sub n/u : Mustoe.

FA Cup tough draw
|
City's entry into the second qualifying round of this season's FA Cup has seen an unkind draw with former Cup darlings Havant & Waterlooville. The game is likely to be played at Whaddon Road on Sunday September 29th.
The Hawks had a money spinning tie with fallen giants Liverpool in 2007 but have failed to use that windfall to rise above their current level in the Conference South where they still are and sit in a similar position to City with a similar record. Going back some may remember the final hurdle that the Tigers fell at against the Portsmouth side in 2000 as well but had success against Waterlooville before the merger in 1997.
The winners of the tie will received £4500. |

Mike Green wonder save
|
City continued to enhance their "poor" reputation with "bigger" teams either by doing their best to prevent Barrow scoring or not rolling over to have their bellies tickled as they earned a point in a goalless draw played out in conditions which were more wintery than the nice weather we've enjoyed so far.
David Mehew's men have to withstand a late barrage from the home side and were thankful to an excellent save by goalkeeper Mike Green as Barrow were left frustrated.
Next week sees another long haul up to Cumbria, this time to old(er) rivals Workington. It's a badge of honour for fans to go to, so see you there!

Scott Wilson won penalty...
Darren Edwards ...scored it
|
Following the last home game against Telford this was another game where City were forced to roll their sleeves up and work hard to get anything, and that endevour was rewarded when Darren Edwards equalised from the penalty spot when Scott Wilson was fouled.
It might seem that Guiseley are a weaker unit now having lost strikers Josh Wilson and James Walshaw in the summer but they've replaced them with former Stalybridge duo Craig Hobson and Phil Walsh and provided a stern test to the Tigers' ambitions this afternoon.
The Yorkshire side took the lead when they punished David Mehew's men for their indecision following a poorly executed Lewis Hogg free kick and within seconds they had outnumbered the retreating City players on a counter attack before eventually forcing the ball home through Michael Potts.
City thought they might've equalised when Scott Wilson's pace created a chance for Edwards but the City number nine screwed his shot wide of the target and Wilson put the ball in the net, however he'd been in an offside position when the shot was struck.
Guiseley had a late goal chalked off too, but a glance at the highlights reel will show that City got away with that one as the scorer looked onside!
Tom Webb. Tom Hamblin and Scott Wilson made way as City looked like they had five strikers on towards the end and Boris' risk paid dividends when Wilson's quick feet saw him tripped by defender Danny Ellis. Edwards made no mistake from the spot.

Ryan Batten broken collarbone?
Scott Wilson hotshot
|
In some corners of the Internet todays 1-0 win at Leamington has been described as an "undeserved victory" for Gloucester City.
What a crock of shit.
What it was, in fact was almost a textbook example of how to stifle an opponent used to winning on their home ground before subtly changing tack as the game wares on, eventually going for the kill towards the end.
OK, so, we left it late. Very late. But the introduction of Scott Wilson was the catalyst for this victory as the "man in the hole" became a partner for Darren Edwards who after working hard all afternoon, on a blazing hot summers day, still had the presence of mind to play in his young teammate who steamed past two defenders and prodded a shot inside the post.
To say it created scenes of delerium is an understatement.
Leamington had had their chances, as had City, but it was City's who were better.
Edwards had just missed the target with a shot while Darren Mullings drew a solid save from the keeper in the first half and headed narrowly wide in the second. Only Lewis Hogg will know how he managed to miss with a clear shot from the six yard box, but we'll forgive him because, frankly, he scares me.
Sam Rawlings had a decent game at right back and Ryan Batten had slotted in at centre-half and looked comfortable until he came of with a suspected broken collar bone. Jamie Edge played the full game in midfield and will only get better while Mike Green had a bit of strange afternoon; his clean sheet can't be criticised but he looked almost ashen faced after he misjudged a goal kick and saw it bounce once and then hit the crossbar!
The home fans will bleat on about handballs and penalties, but where it didn't matter so much they were getting many more decisions than we were from a referee who was calling their players by their Christian names.
Bring on Guiseley!

Lewis Hogg equaliser
Tyler Weir man of the match
|
It was one of those difficult afternoon's at Whaddon Road as City fell to a defeat by the odd goal in three to newly relegated AFC Telford United.
After being anchored to the bottom of the Conference Premier last year they've got a new manager and a new team and by all accounts a new route one style which is apparently not only successful but hard to watch and hard to play against, as City found as they tried to claw their way back into the game after substitute Sean Clancy had scored what turned out to be the winner.
The Shrewsbury team had gone in front with less than three minutes on the clock when Adam Farrell found space between the City defence and strode forward to slot a shot beyond the reach of Mike Green in the City goal, however there seemed to be a blatant foul on Tom Webb as they won possession to score. The referee seemed to let a lot go this afternoon.
Lewis Hogg grabbed City's equaliser when he was played in at an angle by Darren Edwards and the midfielder smashed a shot between a defendes legs which left Telford goalkeeper Ryan Young unsighted and stood upright as the ball crashed inside the side netting.
They had a goal disallowed for offside before grabbing the winner in the second half when Clancy nipped in to add the finishing touch to a hard, low cross from the right wing.

Scott Wilson superb goal
Matt Coupe sent off
|
"Ugly Neil, ugly" said Tom Webb as he passed me at the end of the game tonight.
For a moment I thought he was questioning my good looks but upon reflection I think he was describing the nature of the win. Although there's also a chance he might've been on about the bizarre scenes that took place after Worcester's Shabir Khan and City's Matt Coupe had been sent off.
Most of the players, more Worcester than Gloucester thankfully left the pitch and ran down the tunnel when it seemed that both of those red carded had re-ignited their fued, an episode that wasn't a very good advert for football at this level.
If Webb had mean't the win was ugly then he was right. City weren't at their best, however the one moment of class provided what turned out to be the winning goal when Tyler Weir drove forward from left back and laid a perfect ball on to meet Matt Groves' run infield who then gave the defender the eyes and angled a through ball to the impressive Scott Wilson who drew the keeper and lifted a shot over him to put City two-nil up.
Wilson had been the architect of the first goal after fourteen minutes when he was put in behind the defender wide on the right, something that had been worked on in pre-season and his pace took him towards the penalty are where he drove in a low hard cross towards Darren Edwards only to see Worcester defender Graham Hutchison beat his own keeper with an expertly executed nutmeg.
Just before the second half excitement the team from up the M5 had halved the defecit with a towering header from Aaron Williams from a pinpoint Luke Hubbins cross.
City just about got themselves over the line as they withstood pressure from Carl Heeley's team and the clock in the corner of Whaddon Road showed the time as past a quarter to ten when the referee finally blew up.

Scott Wilson goal
Tom Webb shot blocked
|
After a pre-season loaded with optimism those hopes came down to Earth with a bump thanks to three well taken first half goals from newly promoted hosts North Ferriby.
Playing a new system with wingers Scott Wilson and Matt Groves as part of a front three alongside Darren Edwards it was those two who combined to equalise after Danny Hone had rifled the home team into an eighth minute lead. Tom Webb had a great chance to score too but his effort was charged down as it powered towards goal.
Ferriby would've been used to the conditions at their small ground on the banks of the River Humber in sight of the looming Humber Bridge as an easterly wind dictated the direction of play. The second and third goals gave them an insurmountable lead; number two Mike Green and Jack Harris set up Nathan Jarman to arrow an unstoppable volley home before Matt Wilson headed home from a corner on the stroke of half time.
It could've been worse in the second half had the much maligned Matt Coupe not thrown himself in the way of a tap in but if anywhere the game seemed to be lost in midfield where it seemed that Webb, Jamie Edge, and Darren Mullings worked hard but struggled to figure out their roles. Both Tyler Weir and Harris were tried there too as Boris shuffled his pack later in the game when City enjoyed their best spell with only young sub Sam Turl having any kind of chance.
Overall it's not all doom and gloom as this is a team that is used to winning and have added four or five players to a Championship winning side while Boris will eagerly await the visit of Worcester City on Tuesday to get the season going.

Lewis Hogg another goal
|
The curtain came down on City's pre-season campaign with a lapse in the quality that we've been used to in a one-all draw at Bishops Cleeve.
If Boris had any ideas of playing new signing Jamie Edge at centre-half he might well be having second thoughts after seeing how easily he was beaten but to be fair the starting eleven was pretty random as Neil Mustoe toiled at right back and was beaten all ends up a couple of times by Jake Morgan who'd been on trial with the Tigers just a few weeks ago. Morgan looked superb. Point to prove?
Another new face was Kassim Suleman although he isn't in Boris' plans.
Cleeve took the lead with an attack down the left wing starting with a poor pass from Edge and ending with an own goal from Sam Rawlings, but the former Arsenal man redeemed himself with a wonderful crossfield pass to Lewis Hogg who took the ball on his chest before curling a shot into the far corner to equalise. City could've won it through Darren Edwards but his lob was cleared off the line by a defender.
City : Green (Phillips 56), Mustoe (Weir 46), Rawlings (Parker 51), Mullings (Edwards 56), Edge (Webb 56), Lee (Harris 46), Liddiard, Wilson, Suleman (Coupe 46), Hogg.

Another strong second half performance at Evesham tonight underlined the strength of the City team as we approach the new Skill North campaign.

Lewis Hogg rare goal
Will Morford glanced header
|
These friendlies are coming thick and fast, it's just as well that the plans seems to be coming together!
Whilst the goals came in the second half the first wasn't without incident as Matt Groves continued to impress on one side of an attacking three whilst youngster Sam Turl will learn from the experience he got against a defender the size of Chris Holland when shoulder charged off the ball.
The home side took the lead well past what should've been half time when Matt Coupe was adjudged to have fouled ex-City man Lee Smith, with Steve Davies sending Mike Green the wrong way from the penalty spot.
It was after the break when the Tigers got their act together starting with a well worked corner routine that saw Darren Mullings glance a header in at the near post. Soon after no-one seemed to want to arrest Lewis Hogg's progress into the area, nor goalkeeper Glyn Garner fancied an attempt at a dive as the City manned hammered a shot into the bottom corner.
Scott Wilson, who seems to have found his goalscoring boots ran onto a perfected weighted ball from Jamie Edge to lob Garner before Will Morford scored with a carbon copy of Mullings' goal, albeit from the other side.
We even had a comedy moment where Neil Mustoe protested when the linesman flagged a City player offside from a throw-in. Who says friendlies don't matter?

Matt Groves looking good
Scott Wilson classy finish
|
As a City fan I'm struggling to remember a time when I watched so many good pre-season friendlies because tonight's tough game at Shortwood which City confortably won 3-0 was no exception.
The game kicked off early and those late through the turnstiles would've missed Matt Groves' opening goal when Jamie Edge lifted a ball over the United defence and both the winger and Tom Webb brushed aside any resistance as Groves prodded a shot past Tom King, the goalkeeper who was in City's relegated team back in 2000.
Shortwood enjoyed a few decent spells but there was no beating Mike Green in the City goal.
Scott Wilson made it two at the start of the second half when he turned Groves' right wing centre in with the instep of his right boot under pressure from goalkeeper and a defender with the kind of finish that can so easily be an air shot! The Joe Parker's sublime finish made it three when he lifted a ball over King for a wonderful finish. If he can get to grips with the brutal nature of Conference North defenders he is going to be a very, very good striker.
He has a hunger for the game, a different kind of hunger to Darren Edwards, but we won't say too much about the incident!

Lewis Hogg friendly?
|
For their third friendly in five days City were handed another tough test by Swindon Supermarine, eventually running out winners thanks to a last minute goal from the impressive Matt Groves.
As promised this was a first team fixture and there were very few of the trialists left, just Steve Sparrow in goal, although Mike Green made a comeback in the second half and Ryan Batten who came on for Jack Harris and them went off again after a clash of shins with a Swindon player.
The game was used to try out a new formation with a withdrawn striker and in all honesty was pretty hard to watch with the aim seeming to be to get balls into the channels and new midfielder Jamie Edge saw scant little of the ball which might've disappointed him and made him look to be a shadow of the player that his pedigree suggests that he can be.
Highlights of the game saw the friendly nature threaten to boil over when Lewis Hogg grabbed an opponent by the throat but City stepped up their game in the second half when they pushed that withdrawn atriker alongside Darren Edwards and got the winner through Groves after good work from Scott Wilson.

Joe Parker brace
|
An enjoyable game at Brockworth was decided by two goals in either half from young strikers Joe Parker and Scott Wilson.
Parker gave the Tigers the lead from the penalty spot after trialist Danny Campbell was tripped by the home keeper, although one might think that what with being on trial Campbell would've tried to get to his feet and roll the ball into the empty net. Parker's second showcased his blistering pace as he breezed past a defender and rounded the keeper to score. If he can learn how to cope with defenders he could be our new Jimmy Cox!
The home side did actually equalise with a good move that saw the ball slotted home at the far post by Chris Fairley.
In the second half it was one way traffic as City boss David Mehew sent on some more established players and Wilson put the game beyond the hosts when he scored an opportunist goal whilst sat on the floor before grabbing his second after the keeper had spilled a shot.

Liam Ant'o Orchard celebration
|
A City XI fell to a disappointing defeat at Brimscombe and Thrupp tonight by the odd goal in five.
The only real highlight from a City point of view was a superb finish by trialist Liam Antonio Orchard and a celebration that saw him run to the dugouts only to be met with a tumbleweed typoe response! Darren Edwards had equalised for the Tigers but a late penalty for the home side gave them all three points.
