Hereford United host City
|
City have announced their pre-season schedule with stern tests against big sides like Bristol Rovers and Hereford United. The game against Rovers is the only "Home" game for David Mehew's men as unusually, being the bigger side Hereford will play host to us at Edgar Street.
We faced The Pirates last season but it's been twelve years since we've crossed swords with The Bulls, disappointing really considering their proximity.
The ten game run begins in Bristol at Brislington and also sees City head down the M5 on two other occassions for games against Yate and Weston, the latter being a clever test against a team of similar ability but from the BS South.
The Tigers will also face a number of other local teams like Bishops Cleeve, Cirencester Town, Cheltenham and Cinderford Town before finishing with their traditional game in Gloucester against Longford.

Steve Davies signs again
|
Having lost midfielder Matt Lock to Australian football, City boss David Mehew has moved swiftly to sign Lewis Hogg from Bath City to fill the void left on the right side of midfield. Hogg is a player who is well admired by the City Manager and will bring lots of Conference experience to the team as well as a bite to midfield and a decent right foot.
Hogg is joined by Steve Davies who has committed himself to the club for another season. The Welsh winger will want to improve on some of the better performances he had last year and hope his injury woes are behind him. |

Matt Lock going down under
|
City midfielder Matt Lock has announced on twitter that he's leaving the club and heading down under to play for Australian side Bunbury Forum Force.
Lock impresses many with his cultured displays from midfield and will be missed as he takes up wheat he describes as the chance of a lifetime. City manager David Mehew has suggested that he'll be welcomed back to the club upon his return to these shores. |

Oxford City in the BSBN

Whilst still to be ratified at the Conference AGM at the Celtic Manor in June it looks likely that City will remain in the Blue Square Bet North for the forthcoming 2012/13 season. With Nuneaton and Hyde going up, just Blyth Spartans and Eastwood Town are relegated with new boys Chester, Brackley, Bradford Park Avenue and Oxford City joining our league.
Both Darlington and Kettering Town were due to be releagted from the Conference Premier but off the field issues have seen them removed from the Conference set-up with Hinckley United and Maidenhead United being reprieved in their respective divisions.

Mike Green signs again
|
City manager David Mehew has secured the signatures of six of last seasons squad as he looks to build on a a solid season next time around.
Goalkeeper Mike Green will hope that his injury woes are behind him for the new campaign where he will play behind Jack Harris, Matt Coupe and Tom Hamblin again. Up front both Darren Edwards and Will Morford have committed themselves to the club, which is good news considering that Morf had admirers in both Worcester and playoff winners Nuneaton.

David Mehew couldn't watch
Matt Rose captain for the day
Darren Edwards two more goals
|
"Shocked". "Stunned". "Flabbergasted".
Those are the kind of words which suitably sum up the feeling felt by many of City's fans at half time in this game at Colwyn Bay today as the Tigers went into the break four goals down.
It was a strange feeling because other than on goalscoring terms the Tigers had matched their Welsh opponents, the difference being that the Seagulls had scored with four of their five shots on goal. The disappointment was that City had only had one attempt of their own and that, a shot from Matt Lock didn't really test Andy Metcalf in the home goal.
City had started quite well so it was a real surprise when Rob Hopley smashed home a flick on from Jon Newby on Bay's first attack. To be fair to Chris Humphries the ball was hit with such power that City's new goalkeeper had no chance of stopping it.
It was the two goals in a minute that killed the game. I missed the penalty incident because I was busy getting abuse from the most obnoxious man in north Wales, who also turned out to be their Mr Tannoy. Reign in the attitude you tosser.
Apparently Neil Mustoe pushed a Colwyn Bay player and Fraser McLachlan sent Humphries the wrong way before no more than twenty seconds from the restart Gareth Evans found himself in space on the edge of the City penalty area where he sidefooted a square pass coolly into the bottom corner. No wonder Boris was sat on the bench with his head in his hands.
Had we reached the break with just the three goal defecit or even pinched one back then we might've stood a chance but on the stroke of half time John McKenna seized on a deflection in the penalty to beat both the offside flag and Humphries to poke the ball into the corner for the fourth goal.
The City players were out early and they were probably glad to be away from an irate Boris.
Just Muzzie remained in the changing room as promising young midfielder Matt Liddiard replaced the veteran who hadn't shone on one of his rare starts.
The second half was much better for the Tigers although it took until midway through it for the scoreline to change when Darren Edwards hammered home a penalty after Darren Mullings had been fouled.
Had Mullings not been flagged incorrectly offside he might've added to the second goal that Edwards poached from the keepers grasp to give the scoreline a look which would've given justice to the effort that the players had put in. Sadly the true scoreline was more of a reflection of our defending prowess on the day.
City : Humphries, Mustoe (Liddiard 46), Harris (Mann 31), Webb, Hamblin (Coupe 50), Rose, Lock, Mullings, Edwards, Morford, Lloyd. Subs not used: Wilson, Rawlings

Retiring midfielder Matt Rose is mobbed by the City fans after the game |

Matt Rose is retiring
|
Legendary City midfielder has annopunced that Saturday's game at Colwyn Bay will be his last for the club as he considers retirement.
The thirty-five year old first joined the club in 1999 and did well under the leadership of Brian Hughes but turmoil behind the scenes saw him move to Newport County where he was a fans favourite and Weston Super Mare. He had solid spells at both clubs before returning to Meadow Park under Tim Harris in the summer of 2007.
Everyone will remember him for his goal at Farnborough which clinched City's promotion to the Blue Square North but he will be missed for his influence in the dressing room. Tiger Roar will now need to find a new player to sponsor! |

Darren Mullings equaliser
Darren Edwards retaliation
Matt Lock sent off
|
With safety secured City manager David Mehew took the opportunity to give one or two fringe players a chance against a Stalybridge team still fighting to be involved in the end of season playoffs.
In came Scott Wilson up front for the injured Will Morford whilst Sam Rawlings and Adam Mann were employed in either full back role whilst the ever dependable Jack Harris was tried alongside Tom Hamblin at centre-back.
Celtic hadn't enjoyed the best second half of the season after selling star player Connor Jennings to Scunthorpe United and after once being touted as title favourites were now looking less certain for promotion, although teams have a bad habit of curing themselves against City as typically a third minute shot from Jack Reay flew into the bottom corner with City keeper Chris Humphries unsighted.
The Tigers fought back came close when a header from Harris hit Theo Lewis on the line, then the shot on the rebound from Hamblin flew inches wide.
City couldn't have had a better to the second half as they equalised when Darren Mullings rose highest to head Hamblin's free kick beyond the hopelessly out of position Jan Budtz in the Stalybridge goal. The keeper did his best to claw the ball out but ended up in the back of the net with the ball.
Controversy surrounded the winning goal as the referee refused to acknowledge a City substitution and the passage of play that followed the throw-in ended with Dennis Sherriff finding room among a square City back line and slotting the ball past Humphries.
The bad side of Darren Edwards' game reared its ugly head when he was jostling for position at a corner with Celtic defender Kristian Platt. No doubt their man was poking him and pordding him but referees only notice flailing arms in retaliation and usually produce a red card. Darren was lucky that his stamp wasn't seen.
He's a brilliant centre-forward and makes as many goals as he scores but he can't do either when he's sat in the stand, suspended. Again.
But the game didn't end without City's customary lack of discipline as Matt Lock saw red for a rash challenge.
City : Humphries, Rawlings (LLoyd 79), Harris, Mann, Hamblin, Lewis, Lock, Mullings, Edwards, Wilson (Liddiard 79), Bird (Webb 71). Subs not used: Mustoe, Mike Green

Lewis Carey recalled
Darren Edwards early goal
|
City boss David Mehew celebrated his 200th game in charge of the club with a superb 2-1 win at Droylsden confirming his teams status at the second tier of non-league football for the 2012/13 campaign.
What made the win more remarkable was that goalkeeper Lewis Carey was recalled by Bristol City and Chris Humphries was thrown into the fray whilst both Matt Coupe and Adam Mann were unavailable. It mattered not though as the Tigers made it three trips to the Butchers Arms without defeat.
After being denied an early appeal for a penalty by referee-ess Sarah Garrett City took the lead when Darren Edwards beat Danzelle St-Louis Hamilton with a cool finish.
City were well on top and Edwards headed Michael Green's cross over the bar whilst Dave Bird twice tried his luck from distance. The home team struggled to impose themselves on the game but when they did found themselves up against an inspired Matt Rose at the heart of the City defence.
Ten minutes before the break Will Morford limped off with a thigh injury and a reshuffle saw Theo Lewis moved up front and replaced by Matt Lock.
Lewis doubled City's lead fifteen minutes into the second half after good work from Darren Mullings and Edwards but despite Dale Johnson scoring for the Bloods it turned out to just be a consolation as City held on to claim all three points.

Matt Lock offside?
Darren Edwards yellow card
Darren Mullings should've equalised
|
One City fan, forced to work on this Bank Holiday Monday bemoaned the fact that he had to work instead of watching his team play football today. He needn't have worried, he didn't miss too much.
A win against the full-timers of Histon on the back of Saturday's win at Corby would've not only pretty much condemned the Cambridge team to the drop but would've also completely cemented City's place in next season's Blue Square Bet North, however, as things stand after the defeat even in eleventh place with three games to go City look alarmingly vulnerable.
With two games in three days Boris made a few changes to his starting eleven with Theo Lewis coming in for Will Morford and Adam Mann taking Dave Bird's place. Jack Harris was also named on the teamsheet but was withdrawn and replaced by Sam Rawlings.
City looked sluggish at the start as Histon came out of the blocks quicker than their hosts however Darren Edwards was just too slow to react as a short corner to Darren Mullings driven tantalisingly across the face of goal and David Mehew's men had a good shout for a penalty as Theo Lewis' shirt was pulled by James Stevenson preventing him getting a jump at a corner.
But what was a frustrating half took a turn for the worse when five minutes before the break a long kick from Jorge Stadelmann, the goalkeeper who likes to say "Up Yours!" took one bounce and was slotted home by Daniel Holman. And it could've got worse had the referee adjudged Sam Rawlings' excellent tackle moments later to be a foul and award a penalty kick as many City fans watching from a distance might've feared.
At the break and throughout the game the City fans gave generously in a bucket collection by youngsters Robbie Searle and Josh Peters in aid of stricken City striker Steve Davies.
City came out for the second half with a bit of fire in their bellies and thought they'd got an equaliser when Matt Lock beat the last man and chipped the keeper but was harshly adjudged offside. Right back Michael Green almost broke his duck for the season with a superb dipping drive from outside of the box which Stadelmann managed to just get a fingertip to and turn over the bar.
Then old demons almost came back to haunt Edwards as play was stopped with a Histon defender on the floor and suggestions that the City man had elbowed his opponent. Darren was booked as he protested his innocence.
Seeing Histon players on the deck now became a theme as the rain started to pour down on Whaddon Road. The Stutes' physio was glad he knew to pack his waterproofs because of the time wasting tactic that his team used to run down the clock.
City were denied another clear penalty when Will Morford was prevented from jumped for a ball into the area as the defender used his shoulder for leverage to get above him and Mullings then summed up City's afternoon when he contrived to miss from six yards after Edwards had shanked a shot his way.
Not the Tigers' day and matters weren't helped as a couple of supporters had cross words with Boris at final whistle as the players left the field.

Matt Lock superb volley
Will Morford 200th appearance
Darren Edwards couldn't see
Adam Mann goalline clearance
|
Following three straight defeats which have seen City looking at the final relegation place with a sense of fear manager David Mewhew brought back Tom Hamblin at the heart of defence and Will Morford in attack to make his 200th appearance for the club.
Since ourt last visit Corby have moved grounds, although disappointly they haven't moved far, just next door in fact. Steel Park is very nice but watching the game against the backdrop of their old stand made it feel like watching a game on the outside pitch at Meadow Park!
The hosts started well on a bumpy pitch and Gary King stole in behind a hesitant City defence but found Lewis Carey barring his path to goal as he was denied by the on-loan City keeper.
From the resulting corner Andy Hall, the player involved in that challenge that left Jack Harris with a broken leg two years ago fires harmlessly wide.
As City began to find their way into the game Darren Mullings headed a Matt Lock free kick well wide of the far post.
The referee seemed keen to let play flow, much to the ire of the home fans as City seemed to be getting every decision, although from my clearly favoured point of view the man in black seemed to be getting everything right!
From another free kick Mullings brought a diving save from Bennion as City enjoyed their best spell of the first half but Darren Edwards was guilty of a bad miss after Matt Coupe had forced his way into the box only to have his ex-Bath teammate pinch the ball off of his toe and somehow poke his shot wide.
Tom Webb, playing in an unfamiliar right sided role had a great chance a minute later as he cut in on his left foot but his shot flew straight into the Corby keeper's midriff.
City started the second half well and took the lead with just over five minutes gone.
Morford was instrumental in the move that led to a corner and he was the target as it was taken quickly. A Corby defender managed to repel the cross from his lay off but it ended up back with the City striker who played a one-two with Lock as the midfielder drilled home a volley that flew just inside Bennion's near post.
But the scores could've been level straight from the kick off as the home side burst through and it was only Lewis Carey's positional sense that prevented King from scoring.
Dave Bird made way for Adam Mann and the left winger was enjoying the wide open spaces he was afforded as the Steelmen looked for an equaliser. Part of the reason why they didn't find it was down to Sam Rawlings at left back putting in an assured and compsoed display whilst beside him Coupe showed his class with a superbly timed tackle to prevent Hall from bearing down on Carey.
Morford set-up his strike partner Edwards with a great chance but despite wrong footing defender Steve Towers the City man could only scuff his shot before coming over to the bench complaining about not being able to see properly and immediately being replaced by Theo Lewis.
The substitute almost made an immediate impact when he rose well at the far post to head a cross back from where it came beating Bennion but seeing the ball rebound off of the upright back into the grateful keepers hands.
City don't do things the easy way though and in the last minute Corby sub Sam Mullarkey saw his goalbound header blocked on the line by Mann and with the loose ball pinging around the six yard box someone in a blue shirt thankfully managed to get the ball clear.
The sound of the final whistle saw City move up to eleventh in the table, seven points and nine places above the relegation zone thus ensuring football at this level next season.
Those who disagree and need further proof should come to Whaddon on Monday to see City hopefully put Histon to the sword, kick off 3pm.

Matt Rose professional foul
Darren Edwards gave City hope
|
Arriving late in Yorkshire, just before 7pm City were greeted by heavy snow at Nethermoor. Not much chance that this game would fall victim to the weather though!
After two defeats on the bounce City manager David Mehew made changes as free from suspension duo Tom Webb and Darren Edwards went straight into the starting eleven.
It must've worked because City took a third minute lead when Theo Lewis headed home a superb cross from Edwards.
Although the Tigers never do things the easy way as Matt Rose became the seventh City player to be sent off this season when he committed a professional foul. Fortunately the resulting penalty by James Walshaw was saved by Lewis Carey in the City goal.
Dave Bird was sacrificed to restore City back pairing as Tom Hamblin came on but he had to work hard to keep the home side at bay as City defended in a blizzard.
Just before the break goalkeeper James Drench was injured and after a few minutes delay was stretchered off to be replaced by former City man Jacob Giles.
Whatever Boris said at half time couldn't have worked as within minutes of the restart the Yorkshire side equalised when Danny Boshell fired home through a sea of legs.
It got doubly worse as the home side scored two further goals in as many minutes.
First Lee Ellington got on the end of a great through ball from Dave Merris, and finished it calmly into the bottom corner then Ciaran Toner scored from close range.
Darren Edwards pulled a goal back from a corner for the Tigers with twenty minutes to go but City were unable to find an equaliser and ended up losing by the odd goal in five.
City remain in fourteenth place but with just five games to go and five points from the final relegation spot April may well be rather nervy.
City : Carey, Green, Rawlings (Harris xx), Coupe, Rose, Webb, Lock, Mullings, Edwards, Lewis (Morford 68), Bird (Hamblin 16). Subs not used: Mustoe, Wilson
