Matt Lock new signing |
City have issued a statement of intent to their Blue Square Bet North colleagues with the signature of former Chelmsford City midfielder Matt Lock.
The highly rated 27 year old was an integral part of the Essex team and has only become available due to him moving to Cheltenham with his girlfriend. He has Football League experience with Exeter City as well as playing over one hundred games for Team Bath during their rise through the non-league pyramid. |

George Lloyd hot prospect |
City have fended off interest from two Football League sides to secure the signature of young attacker George Lloyd for the forthcoming season.
The youngster, a nephew of City boss David Mehew was prolific for the u-18's at Team Bath last season and also featured occasionally for City, impressing as a striker in the 3-4 defeat at Stalybridge Celtic in April. Boris has also confirmed that he's offered terms to an experienced midfielder from one of the best teams at this level.
City appear to have another friendly match lined up although nothing official has been confirmed. The Tigers will take on Doug Foxwell's Tuffley Rovers at Glevum Park on Monday August 8th. |

Bristol Rovers friendly match |
Two more dates for your diaries, both home pre-season friendlies for City at Whaddon Road.
On Saturday July 30th David Mehew's former club Bristol Rovers make the short trip up the M5 and it will be their first team on show as they look to bounce back from relegation to League Two. Then a week later former landlords Forest Green Rovers will provide City with a stern test ahead of the new Blue Square Bet North season. Both games kick off at 3pm. |

Mike Symons signs for Worcester |
The fabled AGM Cup can usually be guaranteed to spring one or two surprises and today's "competition" is no exception with the news that Rushden & Diamonds, who face a seemingly uncontested winding up order on Monday have been thrown out of the Blue Square Premier and placed in the Southern League.
The ripple effect cause by this has seen Southport reprieved from relegation to the Blue Square North whilst Thurrock now stay in the Blue Square South whilst their northerly neighbours Bishops Stortford get moved to the BSN!
As one might imagine the Essex side are furious at this now having to face hiked up travel costs whilst they may also struggle to attract local players who want to spend every other Saturday heading north. They have threatened to resign if their appeal isn't successful and if that happens Stafford Rangers will themselves be reprieved to the BSN.

Darren Mullings agrees new deal |
Finally the news that we've all been waiting to hear has been announced; Darren Mullings has agreed a new deal for the 2011/12 campaign.
Mullings has arguably been the best complete midfielder that City have had since Chris Burns and the fact that he wants to stay, as well as veteran Neil Mustoe penning a new contract will delight the Tigers faithful. Mullings netted fourteen goals last season whilst Muzzie showed that he still had plenty to offer at right back.
Boris is still looking for another midfielder and a right winger, although ex-FGR man Jon Else might fill that berth if he impresses during pre-season. |

Tom Parrinello leaving :( |
At this time of year when the clubs announces that this player has signed and that player has signed there always seems to be a disappointment thrown in with the press releases and this year is no exception; Tom Parrinello has failed to agree terms and will be leaving City.
Signed as a left winger the Scicilian filled in at left back following Jack Harris' injury and provided a constant supply of goals with his trusty left peg. He will be missed. Joining him on the way out is defender Tom Evans.
On the plus sude Adam Mann has ignored advances from other clubs to commit himself to the Tigers for another year. Well done that Mann! |

Matt Rose one more year |
Tiger Roar is delighted to be able to sponsor Matt Rose for the fifth consecutive season following the news that both the combative midfielder and right back Michael Green have agreed to sign for the club for the 2011/12 season. Rose isn't without his critics but will fulfil a useful role within the squad whilst Green will look to add to a solid first season with his home town club.
The first indications from the FA are that City will remain in the Blue Square North next season and will be joined by cash strapped Histon as they begin their freefall from the Premier. Below is a list of teams we should be up against but as ever these things aren't cut and dried and are likely to change before the fixtures are released on July 5th.

Darren Edwards another year |
More good news on the player front as top scorer Darren Edwards has signed for another season with the Tigers. The former Bath man is joined by fans favourite Will Morford as well as two strikers who had short spells with the club last year; Steve Davies and Lewis Pountney.
Davies has pace in abundance and can play up front or on the wing whilst Pountney impressed in his short spell with his movement and deft skill.
The friendly at Oxford has been confirmed along with three other away games at Portishead, Bishops Cleeve and Chippenham. All three teams have former City players as managers with Ray Johnstone, Alex Sykes and Adie Mings at the helm respectively.
And finally AFC Telford won the BSN Playoffs at the New Bucks Head today meaning that the Tigers have lost three of their more "local" trips with Redditch and Stafford both relegated. |

Mike Symons released |
As the dust settles on the season just gone and the fans look forward to a well earned break City manager David Mehew has started to make some changes to his playing squad as he looks to tackle what is likely to be another season in the Blue Square Bet North for the 2011/12 campaign.
Goalkeeper Kev Sawyer has agreed terms for the new season and will join Tom Webb, Matt Coupe, Tom Hamblin and Jack Harris who were already contracted but leaving will be defender Callum Preece, midfielder Mike Tambling and most notably striker Mike Symons.
Symo has been the figurehead of City's attack for the bulk of the past three seasons but this last campaign has yielded just seven goals and the general opinion is that both City and the player need a change. Both Preece and Tambling have been useful as part of the squad but have failed to make a first team place their own.
Whilst the pre-season friendlies have yet to be announced officially, one game will be at Oxford City on Saturday July 16th, kick off 3pm. |

Will Morford bagged a brace |
Gloucester City finished their season off in style with a superb 4-2 win at Droylsden thanks to goals from Will Morford (2), Darren Mulllings and Darren Edwards.
The victory secured fourteenth position in the Blue Square Bet North and continued the happy trend of the club finishing in a higher league position every year for the past decade.
At a windy Butchers Arms the Tigers conceeded an early goal to FA Trophy handball cheat Ciaran Kilheeney but Morford equalised when he was first to the rebound after his shot had been saved by Bloods keeper Paul Phillips. But two minutes later Domaine Rouse had the home side in front again with a goal similar to the opener.
Goalscoring midfielder Mullings again levelled the scores with a snapshot into the bottom left after Tom Webb's effort had been blocked before Morford turned Edwards' cross in at the far post from a tight angle. Edwards then got on the scoresheet himself with a comfortable finsh after Phillips had presented him with the ball!
Droylsden gave it their all in the second half but couldn't beat Kev Sawyer and City could've increased their advantage through Morford, Adam Mann and substitute Mike Tambling.

Adam Mann stunning strike
Will Morford equaliser
Matt Coupe player of the season |
"Bouncebackability" was a horrible word spawned on a dying satellite TV football show and it was used by everyone and his dog a couple of years ago. Sadly back then Gloucester City didn't have any but these past two results have shown that we've got it in abundance!
At 0-2 against promotion hopefuls AFC Telford, who had surprisingly fielded their strongest side considering their playoff berth had been booked, in seasons gone by the game was over but goals from Adam Mann and Will Morford saw David Mehew's men earn a fantastic point.
However the catalyst for the change was a staggered substitution that saw Neil Mustoe on for right back Tyler Weir allowing the youngster to dictate the game in midfield and Mann on for Mike Symons so that the previously hard working but anonymous, in an attacking sense, Morford could move up front.
The Shropshire side had been good value for their lead even if it did come via a cruel deflection as player of the season Matt Coupe turned Adam Proudlock's wayward shot into his own net. The goal wasn't without controversy however as a whistle from the well populated away stand after a penalty appeal had seen several players stop.
City were denied what looked like a good shout for a penalty when Symons twisted and turned before shooting but was denied when a defender at close range blocked his effort with a combination of knee and arm.
Having seen a free kick smack against the upright in the first half the team from the New Bucks Head made no mistake in the second when from a narrow angle Sean Newton drove his set piece across a crowded six yard box and inside the far post. Any attempts at defending it would've probably seen a repeat of a Coupey style own goal!
With the Telford players celebrating Mann came on, three minutes later he'd written his name into Gloucester City folklore with a shot so well hit that Telford keeper Ryan Young could only watch it in like the rest of us, even slowed down to 1/10th or normal speed shows how well it was struck.
And that wasn't it, Morford showed great composure as he pulled away from his marker and found space to control a cushioned header from Darren Edwards before volleying the ball past Young and then celebrating by running around the back of the goal in front of the masses of Telford fans.
A great outcome to a tremendous football match played out in front of City's highest crowd of the season.

Mike Symons goal at last!
George Lloyd one for the future
Sam Malsom started comeback
Darren Edwards priceless |
The relief was there for all to see as the ball ratcheted against the back of the Stalybridge net in the seventh minute of this game as Mike Symons netted in the league for the first time since October.
Whilst the goal might not have come from open play, a penalty was awarded for goalkeeper Jan Budtz's clumsy challenge on Will Morford, Symons grabbed the ball from Tyler Weir to put the Tigers ahead.
The small number of travelling City fans might've pinched themselves as their team was a much changed one including youngsters Callum Preece, Adam Mann, Mike Tambling, Tyler Weir and George Lloyd plus a trio of over-thirties at the back with Symons and Morford up front.
Symons should've had another penalty minutes later after he was dragged to the floor but the referee decided that the offence took place right on the edge of the box much to the dismay of the City man.
Maybe this gave Celtic a lift as they began to put the Tigers under waves of pressure and the experienced back line eventually buckled when Matt Rose mistakenly gave a ball to an attacker who squared for Connor Jennings to squeeze a shot through Kev Sawyer's legs.
Stalybridge had looked good in the game down here and started to repeat the show in front of their own fans and just after the half hour took the lead when Lloyd Ellams netted his second shooting through Craig Hobson's legs to beat Sawyer. Hobson was in an offside position though and he jumped to allow the ball to hit the target, surely becoming active in the process? Not in the linesman's eyes!
With seemingly little help coming from City's inexperienced midfield Jim Harvey's men pushed on again and as the City fans were hoping for the half time whistle they had to endure a third goal as Adam Kay drilled a shot across Sawyer into the far corner. It could've been worse but for the efforts of City's number one who is surely in the running for player of the season.
With the home team kicking downhill in the second half City might've feared a hammering but Mehew made two astute changes bringing on the goalscoring Darren's and City started to look more than a match for their opponents.
However that didn't stop Stalybridge scoring again as Jennings notched his second when he galloped into the area to make contact with a flick on before Sawyer could gather.
Those City fans who visited Bower Fold last season might've had a dreadful sense of déjà vu having taken the lead from the penalty spot before going on to lose 1-4 but this encounter was to show that City have the resolve to fight back under these circumstances.
Sam Malsom, on for Morford pulled one back with a cool drive and then Lloyd strode beyond the last defender only to shoot straight at the keeper but had the composure to collect the rebound and cross for Darren Edwards to head home despite Budtz getting a hand to the ball.
The excitement continued unbounded and Stalybridge thought they'd scored a fifth when a lob from Ellams struck the crossbar and substitute Phil Marsh netted the loose ball only to be flagged offside.
But Edwards was to be denied the glory of winning a point for City when he just failed to connect with a pass before the Stalybridge keeper smothered the ball.
Whilst it ended in defeat it was a useful run out for some of the younger players and both Preece and Lloyd were the talk of the traveling T-Enders after the final whistle.

Darren Edwards City's saviour
|
City pulled off a tremendous result at Guiseley tonight with a 1-1 draw against the playoff hopefuls in Yorkshire.
The home side had gone ahead in the first half through James Walshaw but goal machine Darren Edwards got an equaliser for City after an hour as he seized on an Adam Mann shot that had hit the post but the City striker could've had more, especially in injury time when he lobbed the keeper only to see his effort hit the upright. At the other end Kev Sawyer was in fine form and Darren Mullings also excelled as a centre-back after Tom Evans went off injured.

Darren Edwards two more goals
Matt Rose should've seen red!
Sam Malsom impressed
Tom Webb right winger |
Having looked at the fixture list when it was first published last summer a few eyebrows were raised at our run-in, all games against teams who would probably be in or near the playoffs. It was said that if we needed the points then we might struggle to get them against the likes of Alfreton.
Well, it was a Titanic battle today but get the points we did after a tremendous all-round effort.
Having already been beaten 0-4 by the Champions elect in Derbyshire Boris was able to implement a game plan which saw City line up with a 5-4-1 formation that had Matt Rose as one of three centre-halves and Tom Webb appearing wide on the right of a four man midfield. And the fact that Darren Edwards was ploughing a lone furrow up front didn't stop him scoring the two goals that won the game!
Even though it was a better than average crowd on a lovely afternoon the opposition, who, had they won and Telford failed to do so brought a surprisingly small number of supporters, nowhere near the number that Nuneaton had a few weeks earlier.
They probably had one player to every three fans, including non-league journeyman / mercenary / legend Daryl Clare, who was left on the bench. Maybe Alfreton thought they could win this game without him?
City's plethora of bodies in and around the penalty area made it hard for the team from the Impact Arena to find the space to cause any damage but set pieces were always a threat, especially against a team which didn't seem to have any players under six-feet tall.
But it was City who drew first blood after a Neil Mustoe free kick was cleared the ball ended up on the left wing with Sam Malsom who swung in a firm but low right footed cross for Edwards to glance a header into Chris Mackenzie's far post. If the City fans were pinching themselves then it got better five minutes later when Malsom was bundled over on the edge of the area by Josh Law and Edwards coolly slotted home from the penalty spot.
The second half was always going to be difficult and it was made harder ten minutes in when a neat turn and shot from England "C" International Liam Hearn flew into the far corner thanks to a massive deflection.
Chasing the game Alfreton were able to bring on the likes of Clare whilst City could only call on youngsters Adam Mann, Mike Tambling and George Lloyd just to hammer home the gulf in quality between the two squads.
The strangely rabid Alfreton fans in the main stand thought they'd scored when danger man Hearn turned and shot against the outside of the post. They were a weird bunch, seemingly on edge but they're virtually guaranteed to win the league so they should be enjoying themselves and not acting like the did!
City should've been reduced to ten men after eighty minutes when Rose appeared to haul back Hearn on the edge of the "D" of the penalty area. Whether the referee deemed it a tussle more than a foul might explain why the City man escaped a red card and the relief was completed when Clare's free kick narrowly missed the far post.
After more chances, one in particular from Hearn which arrowed over the crossbar just over the withdrawn hand of a super confident Kev Sawyer, much moreso than Tiger Roar, eventually the final whistle blew as City not only celebrated their best result of the season but also mathematically confirmed their place in the Blue Square North.
Or South.

Darren Mullings opened scoring
|
Although it's not mathematical todays superb 2-0 win at Blyth Spartans will pretty much ensure that City will be able to enjoy Blue Square Bet North (or South) football next season. Hyde and Stafford Rangers both have four games each left and have to win all of them to overtake the Tigers, although if David Mehew's men are able to beat Alfreton, Telford, Guiseley, Stalybridge or Droylsden then our fate is in our own hands.
At Blyth first half goals from Darren Mullings and a penalty from Darren Edwards given for handball saw City win for the second season running at Croft Park.

Matt Coupe defended well
Adam Mann shot on target! |
City's run of poor form continued today with a disappointing 0-3 defeat to Nuneaton Town at Whaddon Road in front of the largest home crowd this season. Fair play to the traveling hoards of Brummies, it's a shame it's the exception rather than the rule for the Blue Square North.
City manager David Mehew was able to only name three substitutes as he threw together a patched up eleven against a side who were able to strengthen their playoff push by signing two experienced non-league players this week.
Having played Nuneaton less that three weeks earlier they must've had a point to prove after their lacklustre display in the 0-0 up there as they came out firing and looked more like a team in their league position should, it was down to Kev Sawyer and Matt Coupe that the game remained goalless.
In fact it stayed that way until half time as Nuneaton were able to soak up anything that City could throw at them but they showed their ruthless streak when they took advantage of a slip from Michael Green to open the scoring in the forty-seventh minute. Iyseden Christie strode into the penalty area past a desperately prone Green and laid the ball off to Justin Marsden who found the corner of the net past a diving Sawyer.
Minutes later it was two when a centre fell kindly for Simon Forsdick to lash in an unstoppable volley. City fans with long memories will recall both players tormenting City in the past with Marsden at VS Rugby Town United and Forsdick always seeming to score against us with previous clubs Shepshed Dynamo and Halesowen Town!
City didn't give up though and continued to chase and harry their opponents but it always leaves a sour taste in the mouth when teams don't seem content with winning fairly as Nuneaton keeper Danny Alcock reacted badly following his save at the feet of Edwards. The more cynical among us might think he was trying to induce a second yellow card for the City man from referee Sarah Garratt.
With the game into injury time Andy Hall added gloss to the scoreline when he powered home a rebound from a fine Sawyer save. Fortunately this time he only tried to break the net.
