Alex Sykes 2 (1 penalty!) |
City got back to winning ways tonight with a 3-0 friendly win at in a competitive game played in blustery conditions at Glevum Park. Alex Sykes made up for his penalty miss on saturday with a successful spot kick to separate the teams at the interval before the same player netted with a quickly taken free kick midway through the second half. Luke Ballinger got City's third with another spot kick after a goalbound shot was blocked with a hand.
Skipper Neil Mustoe may be out for as long as three weeks with the hamstring tear that he suffered against Bedford on Saturday whilst it is hoped that Will Morford will be available for selection in time for the Chippenham game in two weeks time.

Alex Sykes Penalty saved |
City's luckless run against Bedford Town, a team who shouldn't even be in this division continued with a single goal defeat (with the winner being a mishit cross) and a saved penalty from Alex Sykes. The defeat see's the lucky Eagles leapfrog the Tigers as Dave Mehew's men suffer their third consecutive defeat.

It's been a busy few days for player movements with Mike Symons signing a contract with Forest Green Rovers having already been registered for their reserve team. Also leaving are Jamie Reid, initially for a month to Brian Hughes' Cirencester Town and defender Alex Allard has made his temporary move to Shortwood United permanent. It's not all bad news though as striker Will Morford is expected to feature in a friendly match at Tuffley Rovers on Monday evening (k/o 7.30pm) with a view to rejoining the club. |

Matt Sysum Reputation intact
David Pleat In the crowd |
There was another entry into City's hall of shame at Chalfont St Peter today as the Tigers were humbled 3-5 by their previously unheard of hosts.
A nightmare opening saw the London team take the lead with a low cross from the right wing converted at the far post and after City were denied at one end play quickly switched to the other where the impressive looking number nine made light work of Ashley Thomas and Neil Mustoe before curling a shot into the far corner. City were denied a blatant penalty when Mike Symons' shot was handled by a defender on the floor and Jack Pitcher should've netted after Luke Ballinger's one-on-one attempt was blocked. It was a poor first half display by both forwards at Farnborough last week and the same was evident again today.
Still in the game at the start of the second half the Tigers pushed on with renewed vigour but were dealt a sucker punch when again the home team broke and the ball passed by Mustoe for the number ten to cooly slot past Sawyer. It got worse as a right wing cross was headed home by a player unmarked in the centre of defence but two minutes later Jack Pitcher was on hand to smash home from close range to give David Mehew's men hope.
The introduction of Matt Sysum had breathed fresh life into the team and he was arguably the only player to come out of the game with his reputation intact. It was apt then that he got on the scoresheet as he rose highest to challenge the keeper and nod the ball out of his grasp and into the back of the net. Another sub, Alex Sykes bagged the third from the penalty spot after Lee Smith was upended to set up a grandstand finish but as the home side wasted time and feigned injury City got frustrated and Sawyer was beaten for a fifth time deep into injury time.

Alex Sykes Penalty double take |
City's unbeaten start to the season came to an end against a very good Farnborough side at Cherrywood Road this afternoon.
Despite an encouraging opening the hosts looked more dangerous in front of goal and took the lead with an incredibly simple goal when Darren Wheeler controlled a kick from keeper Lyall Beazley to score unchallenged by any City defender. David Mehew's men rarely threatened Beazley's goal.
The second half was better for the Tigers and Jack Pitcher should've done better when put through but was denied by the keeper's legs as he tried to round him, then Farnborough scored again against the run of play as Matt Rose put through his own net from a corner. Within minutes Alex Sykes had netted from the penalty spot after Lee Smith was adjudged to have been fouled, although it was a soft decision. Beazley actually saved the spot kick but it was ordered to be retaken after the keeper had strayed off of his line. In the aftermath of the goal defender Dave Woozley punched Syko in the head and only the referee will know why the offence only merited a yellow card. Mehew's men pressed for an equaliser but the experienced Boro defnce proved too hard to break down.

Mike Symons Six in six games |
The Tigers roared up to third place in the league, behind fancied Halesowen and saturdays opponents Farnborough with this comprehensive 3-0 victory over last season's fifth placed team Bashley.
Played on the most inclement of evenings up on the Cotswolds at Cirencester City showed that they'd learned from their mistakes against Oxford and kicking with the wind at their backs took a two goal lead into the break with two absolute screamers which will leave Bashley keeper David Elm having nightmares. After trying his luck moments earlier Luke Ballinger set himself from twenty-five yards and let rip with an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner. Not to be outdone Southern League top scorer Mike Symons did the same two minutes later only from further back for his sixth goal in six games.
The second half was a test of teamwork and mental strength for Dave Mehew's men who had to keep Bashley from using the wind advantage and despite an early scare when one of their four travelling supporters thought they'd scored the Tigers showed a maturity and team ethic not seen for years as they coped with the opposition and even scored another when Symons rolled the ball into the empty net after confusion between Elm and ex-City defender Matt Parnell.

Jack Pitcher Duck is broken!
Tom Hamblin Superb display |
The Tigers put their sorry run of three two-all draws behind them with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Lodge Road against Yate Town today. A scoreline that flattered the hosts as Dave Mehew's men dominated from start to finish.
Yate have Lee Matthews, a keeper who played for the Tigers in an Errea Cup match against Didcot Town two seasons ago to thank for keeping the score to a respectable number although he could do little as Jack Pitcher broke his duck for the season midway through the first half when he rifled the ball into the back of his net. The relief in Pitcher's celebration was there for all to see!
In the second half Yate, missing the dangerous (football wise) David Anyinsah and the downright dangerous Lee Jeffries offered little despite starting the game on top of the table as Kev Sawyer spent most of the game sat in his deckchair enjoying the sun. Luke Ballinger, playing out of his skin and forcing boss David Mehew to keep Alex Sykes on the bench smashed home City's second at the far post after Lee Smith had threaded a perfect ball across the face of the goal.
After the game ex-Tiger Michael Whittington described Tom Hamblin as "Fitter and stronger than he'd ever seen him". Hambo, who put in a near faultless display missed most of last season through work commitments but is now starting to repay Boris and Tim Harris for the faith they put in him when he made the step up from Bristol Manor Farm.
City team : Sawyer, Harris , Marshall, Mustoe, Hamblin , Rose, Smith, Webb, Pitcher (Ellis 73), Symons, Ballinger. Upcott, Thomas, Sykes, Sysum
Both Marcus Palmer and Matt Walsh have been released after failing to settle with the club after joing in pre-season. Palmer felt that he needed to play at a higher level and has linked up with Solihull Moors in the Conference North and Walsh, who doesn't drive was finding the travelling from his Cardiff home to Hartpury and Cirencester difficult. Tiger Roar wishes them both the best of luck in the future.
In two weeks time City will make the journey east to Chalfont St Peter in the FA Cup after the cockney team beat foresters Harrow Hill in the preliminary round today. A week before that memories of 1991 are refreshed as the Tigers make the trip to Cherrywood Road to face Farnborough. The Supporters are hoping to run a coach to the game, details can be found on the . |

Jack Harris Debut Goal |
After four games the Tigers are still unbeaten but having been ahead in the last three only to have to settle for just a point makes it hard to feel too excited about the teams current standing.
Against Oxford City at the Corinium today in a game where the wind spoiled the proceedings as a spectacle David Mehew's men took the lead midway through the first half with a snapshot from debutant Jack Harris who was in the right place at the right time to finish after Jack Pitcher set him up. Substitute Craig Falconbridge levelled the scores on the hour mark when indecision at a corner gave him a tap in but Mike Symons bagged his fourth goal in four games with a clever flick header similar to Saturdays effort from Lee Smith's inswinging cross. Sadly, with five minutes to go Smith was tackled wide on the right by James Saulsbery who sent a ball up into the channel that was crossed for other sub Yashwa Romeo to connect to and lob Kev Sawyer into the top corner.

Luke Ballinger Lobbed keeper
Tom Webb Costly mistake |
It was another afternoon of disappointment for the Tigers at Worcester City's St Georges Lane stadium as they saw another away victory slip from their grasp as Evesham battled back from 2-0 down to grab a point and leave boss David Mehew threatening changes to shore up his back line.
Luke Ballinger gave City a tenth minute lead when he combined with Jack Pitcher before sublimely lobbing the ball over Evesham keeper Nathan Vaughan's flailing dive to send the City fans into raptures. Mike Symons made it two early in the second half when he beat Vaughan to an inswinging corner to head the ball back high into the far corner but a supposedly defensive substitution of Jamie Reid for Ballinger proved to be Mehew's undoing.
With Vaughan's massive drop kicks making him their main playmaker and impressive striker Danny Lennon proving too hot to handle for the City defence both were involved as a long kick found Lennon wide on the left, Lee Smith was unlucky to lose possession after a tackle and the ball was centred to Mark Hands on the edge of the box to drill a shot inside Kev Sawyer's post. Less than ten minutes later they were level when a right wing cross from Allando Davis saw Tom Webb scuff his clearance to Hands in the six yard box and the Evesham man swept the ball home for his second. We should be thankful for a point though as Sawyer was again beaten at his far post only for skipper Neil Mustoe to appear from nowhere to clear off the line.

Neil Mustoe Own goal & two pens!
Jack Pitcher Penalty getter! |
Two points dropped rather than one gained was very much the feeling after tonight's 2-2 draw at Ladysmead against Tiverton Town.
Despite the Tigers bossing the majority of the play in the first half the home team took the lead after thirty minutes when a deep free kick was headed across goal by Nathan Rudge where Neil Mustoe, attempting a clearance stabbed the ball through Kev Sawyer's legs, although the goal was officially credited to Tivvy's Tom Gardner. They weren't ahead for long though as Marcus Palmer was pulled down as he turned past Rudge and the referee didn't hesitate to point to the penalty spot, from which skipper Mustoe atoned for his own goal with a powerful finish past ex-scuzzer Steve Book.
With just minutes gone in the second half Mike Symons had the ball in the back of Book's net after a clever free kick saw Palmer peel away from the pack and shoot through a sea of legs but Symons was ruled offside. Moments later there was less luck for the big striker as he was pushed by Rudge as he jumped to head the ball into the empty net after Luke Ballinger's volley had smashed against the crossbar. Nothing amiss indicated both referee and his assistant.
The man in black however had no choice but to point to the spot when Jack Pitcher (on for Palmer) charged through only to be brought down by the outrushing Book, earning the veteran stopper a yellow card and Muzzie the opportunity to score again, which he did with aplomb.
The much desired three points were thrown away however when Lee Smith was caught in possession and Tiverton won a corner which was floated to the far post where Rudge climber highest and faceplanted the ball into the back of the net.
It was a good all round performance from the Tigers although Boris and Adie will be concerned at the ease with which Tiverton scored from set pieces.

Mike Symons Two Goal Debut
Luke Ballinger Debut goal |
The Tigers made the best possible start to life in their new home at the Corinium Stadium with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over newly promoted Stourbridge, and it could've been more!
Playing with the wind at their backs, going uphill in the first half David Mehew's men settled well and took an eighth minute lead through new signing Mike Symons who got his head to a flighted pass to deceive goalkeeper Lewis Solly and find the net. Four minutes later another debutant, this time midfield dynamo Luke Ballinger stole in with a late run to cooly divert Jack Pitcher's cut back past the half hearted attempt to save by Solly.
Stourbridge rarely threatened and the only time Kev Sawyer was called upon to act was a tame shot straight into his midriff although the Brummies did put together one flowing move to the left wing which resulted in a deep cross that might've seen a goal had a player been on the end of it!
The second half, downhill towards Swindon was bossed by the Tigers and Symons again got on the scoresheet when he burst through on his own before dummying a defender and dispatching a shot into the far corner with his left foot. The ex-Clevedon striker impressed with his all round game with the ball seemingly glued to his foot as he held up play to bring the likes of Pitcher, Ballinger and substitute Marcus Palmer into the game.
The fourth was again scored by a player making his bow. After a wind assisted swrirling cross wasn't properly dealt with by the Glassboys defence the ball fell nicely to centre-half Lee Marshall on the edge of the box and his finish through a crowd of players was as composed as you're ever likely to see and hopefully a sign of things to come from the new signing from Paulton Rovers.
The game would've been complete had Lee Smith's thunderous half volley from the corner of the penalty area gone in off the bar instead of down and out but it wasn't to be although the right winger will take some consolation by seeing the Mighty Tigers sit proudly on top of the Southern League table tonight!

Jack Pitcher Left wing?
Lee Marshall Set for debut
Tom Hamblin Misses out? |
Gloucester City embark on what could be an exciting league campaign tomorrow with a their first game at their temporary Cirencester base against newly promoted Birmingham side Stourbridge.
The Glassboys will be no strangers to City with both teams having crossed swords in last seasons FA Trophy with a 1-1 draw at Amblecote followed by a 2-0 home win for the Tigers at the New Lawn. They'll be no pushovers either having gained promotion via the playoffs in front of a big crowd at Leamington.
New boss David Mehew has already said that his aim this season will be "progress" and if the club do improve on their sixth place last season then it will mean the Tigers taking part in the promotion playoffs for the first time in their history, although that seems a long way away at this present time!
Mehew has a fully fit squad to call upon with only one or two players guaranteed a starting berth in his team, goalkeeper Kev Sawyer is one of them and sweeper Neil Mustoe will be the other. If his gameplan doesn't change from Tim Harris' last season then Mustoe will form part of a three man defence with new signing from Paulton Rovers Lee Marshall likely to play on the left and Ashley Thomas on the right hand side with the returning Tom Hamblin unlucky to miss out.
In a five man midfield if Matt Rose has recovered fully from his Nathan Rudge inspired nose operation he'll be picked to do the "dirty work" and attempt to break up the opposition's attack before it starts as well as weigh in with the odd sly foul or two!
On the right hand side Lee Smith should continue to give his opposite number nightmares whilst tucking inside him will be midfield engine Tom Webb. Webb was transfer listed last season but thankfully remained a Tiger, one who's work ethic and non-stop running continue to be a major asset to the team. Alongside Webb, in front of Rose forming a diamond should be James Upcott, the youngster plucked from Cardiff City who has impressed immensely during pre-season. Alex Sykes will need to be on top of his game to dislodge Upcott on his return from his honeymoon.
Controversially on the left wing I expect to see Jack Pitcher in a role that he performed to distinction in our final game at the New Lawn versus Kings Lynn. If Mehew opts to play Pitcher up front then I fully expect to see Luke Ballinger in this role instead.
That leaves us with the strikers, which should be a partnership of Mike Symons and Marcus Palmer. Symons hasn't really won over the fans during pre-season but I have a feeling he'll come good and Palmer, who we have for at least seven games should provide a dangerous goal threat for the Tigers.
That said, if Boris goes with 4-4-2 then I haven't a clue what the team will be!
The most important thing is that if you're reading this then you need to get yourself down to the Corinium Stadium tomorrow and get behind this team because on their day they will be more than a match for anyone in this league. |

Marcus Palmer Signed for City |
The transfer activity continues at City with the news that Marcus Palmer has signed for the Tigers in an effort to be in the shop window as he continues his desire to return to full time football following his release from Hereford United in the summer.
The Gloucester based front runner proved an instant hit in a loan spell with the Tigers last season with a debut hat-trick away at Rugby Town as City won 5-0 at Butlin Road. He went on to net five times in just four games as a groin injury curtailed his loan.
Palmer has agreed to spend the first month of the season with City as he continues to seek a place in full-time football. He and the club will then sit down to review the situation and decide on the future. The club fully understand his desire to remain in the full time game, whilst Marcus is delighted to be playing for his home-town club in the interim. |

James Upcott Two quality goals
Jamie Reid Going on loan |
City finished off their pre-season campaign with a 5-0 victory against a hard working Longlevens side in front of a crowd of almost 200 at Longford Lane. Boss Dave Mehew, hoping to help forge better links with his former club Bristol Rovers gave one of their fringe players Chris Miller a game on the left wing. The Pirates have abandoned their reserve set-up and will be looking to keep their squad fresh by playing them with local sides this season.
The game itself failed to produce the kind of rugby scoreline that we've seen in recent fixtures at Staunton & Corse and Quedgeley Wanderers but once the Tigers got their foot on the ball and passed it around they always looked likely to score against their Northern Senior League opposition.
Alex Allard gave City the lead when he struck a direct free kick into the top right hand corner and will fancy wrestling the ball from Alex Sykes in similar positions this coming season. New boy James Upcott bagged the second with a cool twenty yard drive that had the keeper grasping at air and Jamie Reid made it three before the break when he robbed a dallying defender before composing himself and sliding the ball home past the keeper.
In the second half City made changes that affected their play but striker Karl Nash would've been delighted to notch his first City goal even if it was a stab home from close range after the keeper had fumbled a cross from Luke Ballinger. Upcott got his second and City's fifth with a flying header from Lee Smith's cross after good work between the latter and Tom Webb.
To listen to Dave Mehew's post match interview and for photos.
In the interview Boris reveals that Jamie Reid will start the season on loan at Almondsbury Town in an effort to improve his match fitness after taking a heavy knock in the Cinderford game. Also leaving City will be midfielder Marc Richards who has signed for SLP rivals Chippenham Town. |

??? the Tiger Needs a name |
Not a great evening for the Tigers as they went down 1-2 to Bishops Cleeve in a friendly match at the Corinium. Mike Symons equalised in the second half after an earlier goal from former Cirencester forward Gareth Hopkins had given the visitors the lead, however the Cheltenham team sealed victory when James Verscesi stole in to head the winnder past Kev Sawyer in the City goal.

Mike Symons City or FGR? |
There has been some debate about who new signing Mike Symons is actually going to play for this season with the burly striker signing for both the Tigers and FGR. Whether he has what it takes to make the step up to the Conference remains to be seen but if his availaibility causes problems then his spell as a Tiger could be a short one. No doubt Tim and Boris have a contingency plan if he opts to try his luck at the New Lawn or Rovers boss Jim Harvey bars him from playing in FA competitions for the Tigers.
Symons played as a second half substitute as City were held to a 1-1 draw against Conference South side Weston Super Mare at the Corinium. With a large number of players on show (and a handful unavailable or on holiday) it was no surprise to see City going for it against the team which should've been playing in the BGB this season and they took an early lead through an own goal by James Palmer from a James Upcott corner. The scoreline stayed that way until deep into injury time when Kev Sawyer blocked a shot from Ryan Harvard and ex-Tiger Mark McKeever tapped the ball into the empty net.
after the WSM match.
It's looking unlikely that Marc Richards will appear in a City shirt next season and he's said to be weighing up his options with offers from several clubs. He played 45 minutes for Chippenham Town on Tuesday night as they beat Melksham 4-0. |

Jody Bevan Released |
Recent results in pre-season friendlies have seen City maintain an unbeaten start whilst continuing to shape their squad for the forthcoming campaign.
Hereford side Pegasus put up a fight and forced the Tigers to come from behind to win 3-2 with two goals from new signing Luke Ballinger plus another from Alex Sykes, whilst City's first home game at the Corinium Stadium ended with an emphatic 5-2 victory against Witney United. Again Sykes was on the scoresheet and his penalty was added to by Lee Smith, new signing Mike Symons, Jody Bevan and James Upcott.
After the game both Jody Bevan and Jody Taylor were told that they were surplus to requirements and given their release, a decision that proved bitterly disappointing with the former who posted a farewell on the .
Saturday saw a disappointing goalless draw played out in sweltering conditions at Malvern Town. |

Stourbridge Opening fixture |
Last season's Midland Division playoff winners Stourbridge will open the Tigers' 2008-09 BGBL Premier campaign when they visit the Corinium Stadium on Saturday August 16th. Even though The Glassboys are new to this division they won't be an unknown quantity for David Mehew's men as both teams faced each other twice in last season's FA Trophy with a 1-1 draw at Amblecote and a 2-0 success for City at the New Lawn.
A home opener usually means two away games on the bounce and this coming season is no exception with road trips to Tiverton (Tuesday August 19th) and Evesham United on the following Saturday at Worcester City FC's ground.
The clubs opening fixtures in the FA Competitons are away at the winners of (Chalfont St Peter v's Ardley United) v's (Harrow Hill v's Alresford Town) on Saturday September 14th. In the FA Trophy we face a tough trip to relegated Bromsgrove Rovers on Saturday October 18th. |

Alex Sykes Lethal left peg |
"Blowing out the cobwebs" was a phrase well used by manager David Mehew after tonights opening pre-season test at the Causeway where a weakened Tigers XI played out a 1-1 draw with a sprightly looking Cinderford team.
City started with new signing Luke Ballinger alongside Jody Bevan up front whilst former Cardiff City youngster James Upcott played left side in the first half and right in the second. Alex Sykes scored for the Tigers midway through the first half when he collected the ball in midfield, advanced and drilled a left footed shot from twenty yards past Matt Bath's despairing dive. The Bear Killers got a fortunate equaliser when Neil Griffiths smacked a shot against the bar and giant striker Lewis Sommers' effort was adjudged to have crossed the line despite protests from Kev sawyer.
Cinderford's Ben Gascoyne made his mark on the game and more specifically Jamie Reid's ankle when he dived in late to earn a yellow card, rare for a friendly and also end the City mans involvement in the game.

Javelin Park New Ground? |
City fans were given some surprise good news on the eve of the pre-season friendly schedule when it was announced that Javelin Park, a vacant industrial plot earmarked for a controversial incinerator has been put forward as a location for City's new home ground. The area which is beside Blooms Garden Centre and Junction 12 of the M5 on the B4008 Hardwicke to Stonehouse road will become a sporting hub for the City and will also include a seperate eight lane running track for Gloucester Athletics Club and possibly also a rugby ground for Stroud RFC who are looking to relocate from the surrent stadium at Fromehall Park.
City Chairman Dave Phillips said "Parmjit [Dhanda] is (besides looking to help three sporting clubs), looking to circumvent the highly provocative subject of sighting a new waste incinerator there, and has feed-back from various relevant interested parties, that this would seem to be an ideal alternative, with, as of yet, no identifiable negatives. It is my present understanding that if one of the parties decided it was not for them at some point in the future, then that would not necessarily scupper the whole scheme. It should also not go without mention, that although the site would seem to be presently on the extreme edge of suburbia, within five years or so, it will likely be anything but, and also there would be no access problems to overcome!"
