Dave Wilkinson
Red Card
It was anything but a happy new year for City at Yate today as they crashed to a 1-3 defeat against the North Bristol side. Jason Wood opened the scoring with a deft header from David Elsey's cross before Steve Campbell doubled the advantage with a firm shot into the far corner. Luke Corbett pulled one back for Chris Burns' men with a sublime free kick into the top corner but at the start of the second half City were reduced to ten men as Dave Wilkinson reacted to Elsey's provocation to see a second yellow card. Darren Edwards dived in to head a third as Yate comfortably beat the toothless ten-man Tigers.

Burns & Knight
Quit threat averted

Chris Thompson
Giftwrapped Winner
After hosting a lavish Christmas party featuring The Darkness, Jonathan Ross and Boney M the gloom soon returned to Meadow Park with the revelation that both Chris Burns and Keith Knight were on the verge of quitting the club following further cuts to their playing budget.

The Citizen revealed that the weekly amount afforded to the duo for their team amounted to just £1083 whilst Salisbury City are not only top of the table but also head the league in big spenders by splashing out almost EIGHT times what Burns has to offer. The cuts mean't that the gaffer would need to lose two of his bigger earners and decided that if he himself and his assistant Knight were to step down then Neil Mustoe could take the reins.

However, throwing Muzzie into the deep end wouldn't be a solution and Burns decided to stay put whilst Mustoe may well have to be released along with striker Daryl Addis who will be leaving after the Yate Town match. The popular Forester relies on lifts from his Coleford home for training and matches and a further pay cut wouldn't make the journey viable. We'll be sad to see him go.

Back to action on the pitch and Burns took his beleagured team up to Halesowen to face the Birmingham side who are in the middle of a disappointing campaign. The Yeltz should've taken a first minute lead when Alex Cowley skillfully drifted his way through the City defence but his finish didn't match his artistry. The Grove was caught in the middle of a snowstorm before Howard Forniton gave the home side the advantage when he seized on Chris Thompson's woeful backpass at the start of the second half.

City did play their part and weren't afraid to shoot at Dean Coleman's goal but the efforts either went wide or straight at the Halesowen #1. It could've been worse for City had a tap in by Nick Amos not been ruled out after Nicki Preston had been adjudged to have fouled Matt Bath at a corner. Lee Davis wasted City's best chance to equalise when he beat the offside trap but shot into the side netting from a narrow angle with both Dave Wilkinson and Luke Corbett unmarked in the box.

Halesowen went on to scoop the three points but by the final whistle everyone was so cold that they were just glad to get back in the their cars and home to the warmth of the fire!

Luke Corbett
Two more goals
Luke Corbett added to his growing reputation by scoring a brace at the Meadow this afternoon as City easily beat Chesham United 2-0 in Buckinghamshire. His first came from the penalty spot after Daryl Addis had received a kick in the face as he jostled for position on the edge of the area and the other came midway through the second half when he rose majestically to head in Adie Harris' cross.

The win, City's second on the road in a week sees them move up three places to fourteenth, five points clear of the drop zone.

Jamie Reid
Super strike
City bowed out of the Errea Cup at Swindon Supermarine tonight as they went down 2-4 to 'visitors' Cirencester Town in front of a paltry crowd of 71. Chris Burns made seven changes from the win at Rugby on Saturday whilst Brian Hughes fielded a near full strength side, give or take a donkey up front.

The difference in class showed as the away side scored three goals in seven first half minutes to pretty much kill the tie stone dead. First up Matt Bath was at fault as he charged off his line, missed the ball and presented it to Steve Cowe who scored into an empty net. FGR loanee and black sheep Mark Danks got the second with a lob that went in off the far post before Scott Fuller dived in to head the third after a shot had rebounded off the post.

In the second half Jamie Reid pulled one back for City with a shot from the edge of the penalty area after Chris Burns had rolled a corner to him. The gaffer should've walked for his second yellow of the night following a comedy foul on Danks but ex-Tiger Lee Smith nodded in the fourth before City's Lee Randall scored with the last kick of the game from an Adie Harris cut back.

Sweeper Neil Mustoe will be missing from first team action for at least a month following his injury at Rugby on Saturday.

Grace McCatty
Under scrutiny
At a fogbound Glevum Park this afternoon City came back from two shock early goals to win 4-2 against Penzance. However it wasn't plain sailing for City who had an England scout in the crowd watching talented defender Grace McCatty as the Cornish side took a two goal lead through ultra-pacey forward Katie Barker.

But a headed goal from a corner by Kelly Aldridge and a strike into the far corner on her full debut by youngster Libby Timney saw honours even at the break. At the start of the second half Helen Wood shook off the shackles of the defender and her heavy cold to score at the keepers near post before a twenty yard screamer by McCatty put the game beyond doubt.

Todays victory sees City maintain their 100% record at the halfway point in the league campaign. Keep it up City!

Neil Mustoe
Injury woe at Rugby
Superb City put in a battling performance at Butlin Road this afternoon to give the Tigers their first win at Rugby since January 1996, a month shy of a decade.

The winning goal came from Luke Corbett as he waited at the far post to slam home a defensive lapse from Tom Webb's corner and send the handfull of City fans wild. The win came at a cost though as sweeper Neil Mustoe left the field with a pulled hamstring midway through the half whilst Adie Harris did well to complete the game after being kicked all over the pitch. The win lifts City to 17th place.

The Ladies take on Penzance in a vital top of the table clash at Glevum Park (Tuffley Rovers FC) tomorrow afternoon with a 2pm kick off.

Tuesday 6th December 2005
Luke Corbett
Goal ruled out
City's mini unbeaten run came to an end in disappointing circumstances at Meadow Park tonight as Chippenham grabbed all three points with a thunderbolt from Ian Herring at the start of the second half. Luke Corbett had the ball in the net for City in the second half but he was ruled offside. City also netted before the break but Chippenham keeper "Lurpak" was adjudged to have been fouled in the build up. Darren Perrin's men firmly cement themselves in the top places whilst City, who simply couldn't live with the below par Wiltshire outfit will be thinking of the long hard winter ahead of them.

For some surprisingly good photos click here and for a summary, click here.

Bizarrely, next Tuesday's Errea Cup game at home to Cirencester Town will be played not at Meadow Park but at Swindon Supermarine's Hunts Copse ground. Also the following Saturday's home game against Chesham United has been re-arranged as an away fixture. Confused? So am I!

Saturday 3rd December 2005
Dave Wilkinson
Grabbed the equaliser
City did well to earn a point this afternoon against perennial party-poopers Aylesbury United. The surprisingly struggling Ducks dominated play pretty much throughout the game but were unable to turn their dominance into chances whilst the Tigers enjoyed bright spells which saw them bring the best out of opposing number one Jack Rashid on two or three occasions.

The Metroland side took the lead just after the interval with a counter attack which saw a cross planted on new striker John Lawford's head but Burns' men got back into the game when a Tom Webb chip fell nicely for Dave Wilkinson to hammer home the equaliser. The assist must go to Daryl Addis though who calmly shoved the defender out of the way to make the opening for the City scorer!

Friday 2nd December 2005
Alex Sykes
Signed on loan
Chris Burns has bolstered his squad ahead of the visit of Aylesbury United with the loan signing of Alex Sykes from Bath City for the next month. The experienced left winger made a name for himself with Forest Green Rovers in two spells before joining the Twerton Park outfit two years ago.

City will be looking to score their third win on the bounce with victory against the struggling Ducks tomorrow (k/o 3pm) although those hopes may well be scuppered without a ball being kicked in anger as Meadow Park has suffered from the varying weather that has hit Gloucestershire this week. Club secretary Jason Mills will post updates on whether the match will go ahead here.

The Southern League Cup game at home to Cirencester Town that fell victim to the midweek weather has now been re-arranged for Tuesday December 13th with a 7.45pm kick off. The winners of the game have been drawn away to current league leaders Salisbury City.

Saturday 26th November 2005
Daryl Addis
More goals than Bathy!
Chris Burns will be pleased that his team responded to his request for a second win on the bounce following this afternoon's victory against Cheshunt. The gaffer had stated in his programme notes that last week's three points from Cirencester would be wasted if they couldn't add to them against the struggling Cockneys.

It was far from an easy win though as both teams struggled to settle and create chances but it was still a surprise when the away side took the lead with a well taken free kick over the wall by Dean Fenton. The scores were level within a minute as Cheshunt keeper Martin Pete spilled a low cross from Luke Corbett to the feet of Daryl Addis who fired home to double his seasons tally. Corbett put City in front before the break with a smart angled finish after Marvin Thompson had found him with a direct pass from a goal kick.

The second period wasn't as frenetic as the first as both the light and temperature deserted Meadow Park. Our opponents came out looking to get back into the game and it wasn't long before they got their reward as Micheal Deane shot through legs in the City box to easily beat Bath. But despite City looking more likely to score, the winning goal didn't come until ten minutes from time when Neil Mustoe netted from the spot after Nicky Gyoury looked to have handled Richard Mansell's cross.

Neil Mustoe
Scored Penalty!
At last City have won an away game and where sweeter could it have possibly been other than the Corinium Stadium at Cirencester?

Brian Hughes struggled to field a team due to injury and suspension whilst for once Burnsy was able to pick from a full set of players other than himself who was banned for accumulated bookings. Neil Mustoe scored from the penalty spot ten minutes before the break after a Ciren defender had handled Chris Thompson's cross to give City their first away win of the season and a much needed three points. The home team did have the ball in the net in the second half but a linesmans flag ruled it out whilst a far post tap in in the first half was blocked by Mustoe to force a result which leaves Hughes' promotion hopes in tatters.

In this season's County Cup it'll be the Tigers versus the Pirates as City face League Two side Bristol Rovers at Meadow Park. No date has been arranged for the tie yet but the second round has to be played by February 25th 2006.

Laura Meheran
Cross-cum-goal!
City continue to set the pace in the South West Womens Football League with another devasting victory, this time 8-1 against Poole Town who they'd already smashed 7-2 on the opening day of the season.

Poole didn't come to Gloucester to be beaten though and took the game to their hosts before being caught out by the pace and skill of Kelly Aldridge who netted twice with well taken shots into the bottom right hand corner. A goalbound run by Laura Akers was brought to an end by a crude foul which surprisingly wasn't greeted with a card of either colour for the offender and Helen Wood's penalty was saved before she eventually put the rebound away amid calls for offside. Yvette Kemp got the fourth with a neat finish at the far post before Grace McCatty picked up the pieces from a free kick to fire home the fifth. In between those two goals some sloppy defending saw Poole capitalise to pull one back with a lob over Jade Lewis in the City goal.

Changes at half time saw Akers go in goal for the Tigresses with Lewis slotting into the heart of defence and McCatty moving into midfield. Things didn't go to plan for City as the goals stopped and the visitors knuckled down and had their best spell of the game but McCatty eventually lifted the league leaders when her angled pass across the face of goal was turned in at the far post by Aldridge to complete her first senior hat-trick. The yellows added more gloss to the scoreline with near identical goals from McCatty and Laura Meheran who both scored with crosses from the right wing that caught the keeper hopelessly out of position as they flew over her head.

Neil Mustoe
Missed penalty
It's getting tiresome now as City fall to another defeat whilst playing as well as, if not better than their opponents. This time it was in East Anglia at Kings Lynn that Chris Burns' men were beaten 0-4 by their hosts.

After dictating the play for the opening minutes of the game the home side struck with their first attack when top scorer Danny Bloomfield wriggled a shot past the standing Matt Bath despite Neil Mustoe seeming to have done enough to put off the Linnets hitman. Tall midfielder Danny Hammond made it two when he poked a shot into the top corner before politely handing the plate that it was served on back to the City defenders.

But as well as we were playing (forgetting the charitable defending) we weren't taking our chances, a point hammered home by Mustoe himself as his tame penatly was easily saved by Lynn's John Higgs after Dave Wilkinson had been crudely fouled by Grant Cooper as he faced away from goal. Marvin Thompson also missed a sitter when a firm low cross from Daryl Addis had been pushed into his path by Higgs but the defender's shot hit the crossbar and went over.

The second half was much the same with City on top but it was the home side who found the net at the start and the end of the period. A Bloomfield cross fed Adam Smith whose driven shot seemed to take a deflection off of Mustoe before Bloomfield himself completed his brace as he ran onto a clearance to net easily and give the game a scoreline which didn't reflect City's share of possession.

Tom Webb
Unstoppable Strike
This season's league surprise package Banbury United came to Meadow Park this afternoon with an injury ravaged side and will be ultimately pleased with the point that they took back to Banburyshire. A cool first half strike from Tom Webb was equalised midway through the second half by Paul Lamb and although the Tigers picked up a point wins for the teams around us have seen us drop to second from bottom. Gulp!

City have be drawn at home to *yawn* Cirencester Town in the thrid round of this season's Errea sponsored Southern League Cup. The game will probably take place on Tuesday November 29th so it'll give Ciren's Kevin Halliday plenty of time to practice his diving.

Helen Wood
Got the second
At a windswept Meadow Park this afternoon City maintained their lead at the top of the SWWFL with a work(wo)manlike 2-0 victory over Cheltenham Town.

The Tigresses found it hard to settle in the first half with the wind in their faces and were frustrated by the oppositions goalkeeper who was keeping her team in the game. They might've even pinched a goal when Jade Lewis saved a shot but the ball came down and hit the bar before being cleared to safety.

However the second half was all City and after Yvette Kemp had missed a sitter Laura Stephens gave City the lead with a thirty yard wonder strike that had the keeper beaten all ends up. Cheltenham rarely threatened and when they did break were often caught offside so they were put out of their misery when Helen Wood scored a second off the post. The goal was obviously too much for their number ten who was sent off for foul and abusive language. How ladylike!

Before the game City were awarded FA Charter Standard Club Status. Well done to all involved on achieving this accolade.

Richard Mansell
Assaulted at Bath
City came away from Twerton Park this afternoon with a well earned point in a goalless draw against shot-shy Bath City. Not a game for the purist and certainly nothing like the thrill ride at Mangotsfield on Tuesday but Chris Burns will be very pleased with the defensive resistance shown by his men against the experienced and expensive Romans. The Tigers would've been very lucky to have come away with all three points especially considering the amount of possession enjoyed by the home side. Dave Wilkinson had City's only real chance midway through the first half but his effort didn't trouble South African keeper Paul Evans.

Again City's show was blighted by poor referring after Daryl Addis was felled by a two footed lunge by the home keeper who'd ran out to the touchline to contest a fifty-fity ball and got one part ball and three parts Addis thus injuring the City striker and preventing a goalscoring opportunity. Substitute Richard Mansell also found himself in the ref's book after he'd been put in a choke hold by Bath's Tony Bird, bizarre but then the ref was wearing black, just like the home team.

For photos from Alcatraz click here and for a few words, click here.

Due to both sides early exit from this season's FA Trophy the away game at Kings Lynn has been brought forward from January to Saturday November 12th.

Wednesday 26th October 2005
Luke Corbett
Goal in 50 Seconds
Tonight's game at Mangotsfield might've ended in another defeat for City but they can look back on the performance and be justifibly proud of the way that the outplayed the surprise promotion hopefuls. Again the spectre of a useless referee reared it's ugly head when Neville Brimming of Worcester failed to send off Gary Warren as he rugby tackled Dave Wilkinson when he was through on goal. That incident coupled with another foul on Wilko that should've been a penalty and home keeper Danny Greaves appearing to handle the ball outside of his box would've seen the Bristol side delighted with the officials 'performance'.

It had started so well for City with debutant Luke Corbett, shown the door at Cossham Street last week driving in an unstoppable shot after just fifty seconds but non-existant defending saw goals from Rob Claridge, the cheat Warren and Dave Anyinsah put the Mango's ahead. However Jamie Reid unleashed a wicked twenty-five yarder that melted the net to give the Tigers hope at the break.

Within minutes of the restart Chris Burns' men were level when Corbett ghosted in to lash a volley past Greaves but with City on top of their opponents the way our luck is saw them net not once but twice to ultimately put the game out of our reach. Their first was a well struck free kick from the otherwise anonymous veteran Aussie David Seal and their second was a Drew Shore penalty after Neil Griffiths had handled a cross. Dave Wilkinson pulled one back for City but the desperate Clarets took the ball into the corners with more than five minutes to go as they clung on to take an undeserved three points from City.

Luke Corbett
New Signing
Changes have started at Meadow Park as one striker arrives and another leaves. Richard Kear has been released after disappointing the City fans and is replaced by Luke Corbett who has been with Mangotsfield United so far this season. Luke had been mainly used as a substitute at Cossham Street but had still managed to notch three goals during his time in Bristol. Ironically he's set to make his debut away at his former club on Tuesday night.

With a blank Saturday due to Chippenham's involvement in the FA Cup Chris Burns sent his men down to the Forest for a friendly with Mike Cook's Cinderford. One fan described the Bear Killer's performance as "awful" as the Tigers strolled to an easy four goal victory with strikes from Dave Wilkinson, Corbett and two goals (too late) from Kear.

The aforementioned home match against Chippenham Town has been re-arranged for Tuesday December 6th with a 7.45pm kick off.

Sunday 16th October 2005
Lee Davis
Battered and Bruised
They huffed and they puffed and they meekly surrendered their place in the FA Trophy as City went down to a 0-2 defeat at the hands Cirencester Town yesterday. Goals from diving cheat Kevin Halliday and Tuffley based striker Steve Cowe were enough to condemn Burnsy's men to their second first round defeat of the season. With just the League Cup and County cup to play for what price are City to fall at the first hurdle in four cup competitions in consecutive seasons?

For once the wide open Corinium 'Stadium' was bathed in sunshine for a City visit but that was as good as it got for the Tigers as they seemed to play without any kind of gameplan or motivation, time after time playing long balls onto the heads of the huge defenders. You have to feel sorry for Lee Davis too as one of the clubs brightest talents was subdued in midfield and had the sh!t kicked out of him by a Ciren defender in injury time. The goon obviously took the meaning literally and amazingly wasn't booked for his savage assault.

If you can bear it, photos from the game are here.

Wednesday 12th October 2005
Richard Kear
Booked for being hit!
The Tigers gained a point at a rainswept Common Road last night in a goalless draw that was played out in difficult conditions. Striker Richard Kear, now looking twice the player that he did a month ago came closest to earning the points for City when his dipping drive moments before half time brought the best out of the Evesham goalkeeper. Substitute Adie Harris could've also scored when his late shot was spilled by the Robins' number one but he managed to grab the ball before it crossed the line. That said the home side did have a couple of decent chances, Neil Mustoe almost shot past Matt Bath whilst Dave Wilkinson hit the bar with his looped clearance. City picked up three cautions; Neil Griffiths and Lee Davis for mistimed tackles on a slick surface and Richard Kear for being punched in the face by Leon Blake!

For some photos from Common Road click here.

Gaffer Chris Burns sat out last nights game thanks to a red card picked up after the recent Cirencester match when he told the referee what he thought of him. It could mean a longer ban for the City boss but hats off to Chris for saying what we were all thinking to the officious prat.

Striker Andy Varnham has rejoined City after cutting short his Army career.

Next Saturday's scheduled league game at home to Chippenham Town has been postponed due to the Wiltshire side's continued involvement in the FA Cup.

Sunday 9th October 2005
Laura Akers
Scored the opener
City look down on the rest of the SWWFL tonight after another comprehensive victory which sees them extend their 100% record and cement their place at the top of the table thanks to a 4-0 victory away at Team Bath.

With appendicitis victim Helen Wood on the sidelines City struggled to turn their possession into goals and had to survive one or two scares from set pieces before a tidy move between Kelly Aldridge and Laura Akers saw the latter give the Tigresses the lead as the game approached half time.

The students pressed hard in the second period and an injury to Kerys Portbury saw Jade Lewis give up the gloves and move into midfield to give Jo Thompson her first action of the campaign, albeit in goal. With the game still delicately poised Thompson was booked for a foul outside her area as she rushed to clear a Bath attack although it did look as though she got the ball and not the player.

However any nerves were settled as goals from Laura Stephens, Grace McCatty and Lorraine Johnson gave the scoreline a reflection of the City dominance throughout the game.

Saturday 8th October 2005
Jamie Reid
First senior goal
In an early kick off at Meadow Park this afternoon City won just their second game of the campaign with a superb 4-1 victory over Londoners Northwood FC. Despite the cockneys enjoying the better of the opening exchanges it was City who took the lead when Jamie Reid got on the end of Daryl Addis' cross to strike home a volley for his first goal since he made the step up from the youth team. He did score in a pre-season friendly at Wellington and apologised for doing so but he seemed happy about his strike today.

Within minutes it was two when Lee Davis rifled home from Rich Kear's deft touch and then Kear himself added a third as he rounded the keeper after picking up Tom Webb's delightful long pass. The Metropolitan visitors pulled one back at the start of the second half through Ryan Kirkland but substitute Dave Wilkinson took his time to pick his spot in the top corner and give the Tigers an unassailable three goal cushion.

Stuart Pike
City's new Chairman
Following a posting from Jason Mills on the Official site, the club is pleased to announce that Stuart Pike has been named as the new Club Chairman.

Ex-Army man Stuart was heavily involved with his local Hellenic League side Fairford Town for almost a decade where having been introduced as a sponsor he became Commercial Manager and then Chairman. He moved up into bigger and better things when he accepted a position with Swindon Town FC where his many roles in the commercial department included the running of the Box Office and sales & marketing of all Ticketing products & IT.

One of Stuart's first ideas in this new role will be his "Ask the boss" scheme where he encourages City fans to raise awareness of corporate opportunities available at Meadow Park. More details will be available on the Official Site in due course...

Good luck Stuart, you have loads of support behind you!

Sunday 2nd October 2005
Laura Akers
bagged the eighth
The sun shone on the Ladies this afternoon in their top of the table clash with last season's nemesis Frome Town as they easily beat the Somerset side 8-2.

Yvette Kemp opened the scoring when she fired home Kelly Aldridge's cross before Frome's Carla Travis curled in an equaliser. However two goals from Laura Stephens put City ahead at the break, her first being a brave header from a corner and the second was a sublime chip over the keeper from outside the box.

City stepped up a gear in the second half and Helen Wood grabbed four goals to really punish a Frome side which looked to have given up the ghost. Mouse rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net before seeing her header deflect in at a corner. She completed her hat trick with a shot over the keeper before firing a fourth which the stopper got a hand to but failed to keep out.

Frome got a second before Laura Akers completed the scoring with a run and lob that caught the opposition goalie in no [wo]mans land!

Richard Kear
Claimed a goal
City manager Chris Burns left the field looking dejected after todays 3-5 defeat at Bedford Town but despite the scoreline flattering the home side there were some positives to come from the performance. Richard Kear learned how to harry and hassle defenders by chasing them whilst both himself and his partner Daryl Addis got on the scoresheet, although Kear claimed the goal as Addis's shot hit him and deflected past the keeper. Tom Webb had opened the scoring in the first half and carried on to produce an awesome attacking display that we know he is capable of but rarely seems to deliver.

Matt Bath had missed the game due to a wedding and he was sorely missed as rookie keeper Dave Evans put in a nervy display between the sticks and conceded five goals which Bath may have arguably stopped. Let's just hope the wedding was worth it. Also there will be concerns over Jamie Reid who was taken to hospital in a Bedford Ambulance following a first half challenge that reverberated a nasty cracking sound around the ground and saw the promising midfielder rolling on the ground in agony. Lets hope it's not too bad.
