Geoff "Basher" Hancocks was a fireman in the RAF based at Innsworth who signed towards the latter end of the 1989/90 season following what seemed like an age to get his international clearance.
He'd had previous experience at this level with Cambridge City.
Hancocks was first choice at the back as City embarked on a title race in 1990/91 forming a partnership with Ian Hedges before the young defender was sold to AFC Bournemouth.
He wasn't a prolific goalscorer as some defenders are but he netted twice in the FA Trophy early rounds but he'll want to forget the game at Witton Albion where he was sent off when City crashed out on a then rare trip up the M6.
His other goal does stand out though; It was a header against Halesowen in front of the T-End. Everyone seemed to stop except Hancocks who steamed in and made the perfect connection to send to ball flying into the back of the net.
After Brian Godfrey was sacked Basher fell out of favour with new manager Steve Millard who'd signed Paul Bywater from Worcester City in lieu of Basher's availability due to his RAF commitments. This hadn't been a problem under Godfrey, the sacking of whom hadn't sat easily with the burly defender.
As soon as Millard was fired and Godfrey reappointed Hancocks came back following a short spell at Moreton Town. He played out the remainder of the season before moving to New Zealand at the start of the following season.
Upon his return to the northern hemisphere Geoff answered an S.O.S. from Brian Godfrey when City were stricken with injuries and played one further game for the club in February 1993, a 2-4 defeat at home to Trowbridge Town. |
