Brian Godfrey - Manager
D.O.B. - 01/05/1940 - Flint, Wales D.O.D. - - Lefkos (f. Nicosia) Turkish North Cyprus
One of the most successful managers that City have ever had.
One time Aston Villa Captain and Wales International was appointed manager in the summer of 1987 having had previous success with Bath City and Weymouth and was targetted by Chairman Geoff Hester as the man who could lead City to promotion following the move to the new stadium at Meadow Park.
His first three competitive games finished 6-1, 8-1 and 7-0, this following an 18-1 win at Thornbury Town in thier penultimate pre-season friendly but it's a marathon, not a sprint and City finished the season in a disappointing 7th position. The next year however was a different story as they won the league outright and gained promotion to the Premier Division.
The 1989-90 season saw his side finish a creditable 9th but the highlight was the FA Cup run to the second round which saw Cardiff City taken to a replay. With an influx of cash from new Chairman Les Alderman Godfrey followed this up with a 2nd place finish to Farnborough the following season but it fell apart after that and Godfrey was sacked in November 1991.
However after a disatrous three month spell by his former assistant Steve Millard; Brian took the reigns again but in all honesty struggled without the financial backing now that the club barely had two pennies to rub together. He was releived of his duties in March 1994 by Keith Gardner.
Brian still loved to play and often featured for the supporters team in the Sunday League.
He remained involved in local football but came back to City to help out new Manager Chris Burns in the early noughties before he retired and moved to Cyprus. He was awarded a testimonial game by the club and they took on Aston Villa in August 2004.
He died from Leukemia in February 2010.
