Match Report : Bedford Town v's City - October 13th 2007

Gloucester City’s goal drought is now over four hundred minutes following this undeserved 0-2 defeat against Bedford Town at the New Eyrie.

Despite having a number of good chances to score against their mediocre hosts Tim Harris’ men couldn’t find the finishing touch and were ultimate condemned by two goals in two minutes in the closing stages of the game.

Bedford took an eighty-first minute lead when Stuart Sinclair’s shot took a deflection off a City defender, hit the post and rolled across the line where the linesman flagged to suggest that it had crossed. Kevin Sawyer was that enraged that he ran to the assistant to complain and was pulled away by the referee and booked.

A little over a minute later substitute James Hatch doubled the advantage when he seized upon a mishit clearance from Alex Allard and slotted the ball home.

It was a sickening blow for the Tigers who’d given their hosts a run for their money with both Matt Rose and Marc Richards coming close with headers from corner kicks.

New striker Will Morford, on as an early substitute for the out of sorts Jamie Price came close when his twenty yard drive fizzed past the upright and Alex Sykes brought the best out of Bedford keeper Michael Armitt with an angled drive that was pushed just wide.

However the best chance of the game fell to Lee Smith whose far post header down beat Armitt but was spectacularly hooked away off the line by defender Jon Darby.

To add to the frustration the Tigers were constantly penalised by a referee who wouldn’t let the game flow, especially in the Bedford half and was happy to hand out yellow cards to City players but loathe to do so for the home team.

After the match Harris commented “Once again we didn’t take our chances, I’m absolutely livid. For eighty minutes today I don’t think we looked in any danger of losing the game, we’ve had a great chance to score when the keeper dropped the ball and we’ve not punished them for their mistake. Lee Smith’s opportunity was basically an open goal, how we’ve missed from three or four yards out is just unbelievable.”

“It’s the same old story, its hard luck stories and it’s just not acceptable. I can’t keep speaking to the supporters about hard luck stories, the supporters want to see us winning football matches and we’re not doing that at the moment.”

The defeat leaves City twentieth in the table with just two wins from eleven games.
