Gloucester City became the first team to enter into the lion’s den at Kings Lynn as the Norfolk side played their first game of the season at The Walks following repairs made to the main start after they, like the Tigers suffered storm damage in the summer.
Before the game City manager Tim Harris commented that it would be a game where goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer would have to shine if City were to get anything from it and so it became as the big man kept out the home team with a string of saves, including one from a second half penalty.
The home team took the lead in the tenth minute when a corner from Joe Francis was headed powerfully home by ex-Norwich City defender Craig Fleming who’d signed for the Linnets in the week. Lyndon Tompkins was pushed in the build up but appeals were waved away as most of the 1198 crowd celebrated the goal.
Four minutes later they were cheering again as Matt Nolan diverted a through ball into the path of Danny Bloomfield and despite Sawyers best efforts the diminutive striker saw his shot nestle into the bottom left hand corner to make it two.
City tried to keep their heads up despite the double blow and were given an unexpected lifeline when the referee awarded a penalty when Jack Pitcher had his ankles clipped by Ben Chapman. Alex Sykes drilled the spot kick low under the dive of Scott Howie for his fifth goal of the season.
On the stroke of half time City were angry that they were not only denied a second penalty but also that Tom Webb was cautioned for diving when he was tripped by Fleming. This despite many saying that it was a stonewall penalty.
The second half saw City try to force a way back into the game, although it was evident that the home team would be dangerous on the break and Sawyer was again called into action as he brilliantly denied Nolan from point blank range following a square ball from Bloomfield.
A powerful run and cross from Michael Frew was adjudged to have been handled by a City defender and Sawyer again denied Lynn with his second successive penalty save of the season.
City continued to look for an equaliser but were either denied by a resolute Kings Lynn defence or the linesman’s flag. |
