Paul's playing career took in a number of league clubs after starting with Burton Albion but featured most notably for Blackpool and Grimsby Town where he was a member of the team that beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the League Cup in October 2001. He had previous management experience with Grimsby, Portsmouth, West Ham and AFC Bournemouth. At City he had an hard act to follow with James Rowe taking the team to the top of the league and his mantra seemed to be to mould former Football League U21 players into a passing football team but it didn't always work out, sometimes spectacularly with a 0-9 defeat at Chorley! After a disappointing start to his first full season with City actually bottom of the league he left the club in September 2021. His overall record was P17 W7 D3 L7 f32 a34. He returned to Meadow Park as a coach with Buxton in 2023.
