Oakes joined on loan from Aston Villa as an eighteen year old replacing summer signing Alan Knott and went on to complete a three month loan spell. He made his debut away at Hastings where he stopped everything that they could throw at him as Tommy Callinan pinched the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time. Overall he conceded just fourteen goals in eighteen games as he galvanised an average defence into a much more solid one. His last game was a memorable 5-1 win away at Weymouth.
